    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

The focal length of the lens + the 1.6 crop gives this rig some insane reach. It's certainly a challenge with flyers and I cut it some slack re the ultimate IQ.

    Birds in canopy — blurry!

"it seems that the R5 loses tracking if the Servo AF is on too long" Every day is a school day! I've encountered this so many times and honestly never knew that this was the reason for it. Some food for thought there, thanks for that.

    Canon RF 200-800mm IS USM

A couple of images taken with the R7 + 200-800 @ 800mm. I found it hard work with this combination and keepers were at a premium. Even after discounting all the images that were poor because of the difficulty in tracking the subject. It didn't deliver in a lot of situations where I had the bird...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

I only shoot stills and shoot in CRAW so 64 gig is more than sufficient for me, your needs may differ. I use a Sandisk Extreme Pro card and it writes at more like 260MB/s, costs £70 - £80 to buy. I've not managed to max out the buffer yet with it but that's also down to shooting style. You may...

    Sigma 150-600 Lens Alternatives

Look no further if it's a budget lens you're after. £375 after the £200 Canon cash back. That's a remarkable price. John Lewis.

Thought on Topaz Photo AI vs. DxO Photolab

Hi Mark. I'm assuming that you still shoot JPEG. I think your first decision should be do I want to change to shooting RAW? There's not really a whole lot of mileage in buying or subscribing to extensive editing software if if you're not keen on making the move to RAW. Providing you get the...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

The R7 af is good and does the job but is certainly not better that the R5 af. My experience so far is that the R5 af is definitely more consistent.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Barred Wobbler said: "The extra reach of the cropped sensor over the R5 is a big factor with me. I think there's a train of thought amongst R5 users that using it in crop mode (which I've not been a fan of) makes it easier to find difficult subjects in the first place, simply because eliminating...

Good work Bulb. More birds, less boxes!

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Rob. One of the reasons I never got an R7 for so long was exactly the lack of a third dial. On the R5 I always shoot fully manual and use all three dials - nothing else, it's perfect for me. When the R7 is used with the 100-500, the more I thought about it, the less you actually need the third...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Colin, I've tried it a few times and I'm not complaining. Both images are heavy crops approx 2800 on the longest, then resized to 2048. It does a good job in my opinion. R5 it is certainly not but for the price it must be as good as anything out there.

    Camera advice...R7

If you're decided on a used R7, consider this - MPB who are the biggest seller of used gear are selling them at £1040 ish used and you'll get 6 months warranty. E infinity are selling them brand new for £925 with a 1 year warranty (which could be return to base) However both Panamoz and HDEW...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

The R7 provided many keepers in a session packed with action and good light. I missed more shots than I'd have liked but that's most likely settings/user error. It's encouraging though.

Thought on Topaz Photo AI vs. DxO Photolab

I primarily use DXO Photolab 7. It cost me £150 to buy on a Black Friday deal. The noise reduction module is truly class leading, as is the lens sharpening. You can also buy DXO Pure Raw which is a raw convertor, it contains both of those modules and costs considerably less but PL7 is an end to...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Hi Mark. Poor light is not good for the R7, Also it's a 1/3 of the price of the R5 so we have to cut it some slack. That said I tried it again yesterday in less than optimum conditions and although I seemed to be getting more in focus images, the overall performance tells me that it's best used...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

I tried again, this time in excellent light. Electronic shutter @ 15fps 50 odd images taken and all - give or take some minor differences were sharp when viewed at 100%. So right now I put my earlier poor results down to light levels. R7 + 100-500 @ 500. Image very heavily cropped, probably as...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Hi Shane. I tried the camera today in excellent conditions and also with a high contrast subject. Every shot in electronic mode was good and only a couple were slightly off in mechanical shutter mode. it shone in optimum conditions. I don't expect it to match the R5 which I've used for three...

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

Hi Roy. I've updated the firmware although the only part of it that may benefit me was "fix minor issues" lol. I was shooting mainly in similar fashion to you but in mech or EFCS mode, I suppose it could be shutter shock but I would have thought that 1/1600 was good to avoid it. I'll try the...

Thanks for that. I have seen it and I dialled down everything. Maybe there are settings to be fine tuned.

R7 for bird photography and birds in flight

My first outing with the R7 which I purchased this week produced some images which were very pleasing indeed but the keeper rate was pretty poor. It's almost certainly me and I'm quite perplexed at the moment. I've read quite a bit about slow readout, rolling shutter, af not keeping up...
