    Larus cachinnans? First winter?

I'm stumped on this one really, and unfortunately there isn't enough detail for me to make a decision. I am going for L. cachinnans based on overall appearance. Seen on Tuesday at a site in Oxfordshire that has recently had four juvenile L. cachinnans regularly. Thank you

    Larus argentatus argentatus?

Is it possible to confirm these Herring Gulls as nominate L. a. argentatus please? I saw them in Oxfordshire, England, on Tuesday this week. They stood out from the crowd as they were big and brutish looking. They drew my attention at first thinking they may have been L. michahellis but...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Warwickshire

I wasn't aware of this, otherwise I could have done something about it (I don't have the option to delete it now). I did consider not posting that information but as Red Kite is not generally such a rare breeding bird now and it is post breeding season I didn't think it would be an issue. Sorry...

    Warblers mobbing Spotted Flycatcher

I think this is relatively interesting and is something I haven't observed before, so I wondered if anyone else had. Yesterday morning I was watching the tit flock in the wood on my patch that had a Spotted Flycatcher and several each of Chiffchaff and Willow Warbler. I was concentrating on the...

    Small bird, Hungary

Fantastic little birds! I can't find a Birdforum Opus page for them but here is the RSPB link http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdguide/name/w/wryneck/index.aspx (UK). We have a fall of them on the east coast today with some sites getting multiple birds. Gareth

    Tromso Norway July 2013

Yeah, I think so. I was wandering if it was Whimbrel, but I think you are right with Curlew. Gareth

Larus sp. Gull ID, UAE, 2010

I took photos of this gull in October 2010. I'm not too hot on large gull taxonomy and ID, and reading up on what species are in this region made my head hurt a little! Can some please tell me what this is (or most likely to be) and why? Precise location was Sir Bani Yas island - Abu Dhabi...

India bird ID - Black Redstart?

I don't know what it is, but I can tell you it's not a Black Redstart! It does look like some sort of chat though. I did think Blackstart, but looking at images of that I don't think it's one of those.. Gareth

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Thank you both. I know a bit about the Wirral and I have been checking the website. It's always useful to have advice from those in the know. I think I'll give Leasowe a miss and try to get to Hoylake for the roost and sneak in a quick look at West Kirby for the Mergansers. Cheers, Gareth

Cheshire And Wirral Birding: Hills, Lowland and Coast

Thinking of doing a bit of sea watching off Leasowe over high tide this Sunday. Just hoping to get a few things onto the year list if I can. Is there much to be seen at the moment? I was thinking Red-throated Diver, Scoter, Gannet.. is there anything more unusual around? Or am I being optimistic...

    Colour ringed Kittiwake

Nearly two years on and I still can not confirm for sure where my bird is from. The BTO have been trying to track it and have emailed my record and photo and the photo of the bird on surfbirds (above) to Jean-Yves Monnat in France. Unfortunately there has been no reply or confirmation yet.. Gareth
