Rare bird seen by power station (BBC News)

"Thought extinct = wow look at this amazing discovery in science" in laymen's terms!! ;) Sounds a daft question but can they fly or not??

    Greater Manchester Birding

Spoke to my mum today and she told me there was a dead snipe at Manchester Picadilly (main entrance (not the taxi rank)) yesterday morning. She believed from the blood on it that it had smashed into the glass frontage there. I'm supprised to have Snipe so close to the centre of Manchester. Any...

    anyone bird near newport?

Fare enough - I did CM at HAUC. The HAUC estate has some places which might have something but I wouldnt hold my breath and certanly not when the students are there (Caynton Gorse perhaps, and down by Edgmond Hall).

    anyone bird near newport?

Hey use to live in that neck of the woods (was at HAUC). Didnt get out enough I have to say but Aqualate Mere NNR is quite good, public access is via footpaths from near the "Swan @ Forton". Also there was an area of rough scrub area at the end of Newport (furthest away from Chaney Hill and main...

Island fears over 'trawler rats' (BBC News)

Cheers Astevenson - thank you for the info. Well if there Management plan covers for this then they should be prepared for it. :t:

To Cull or not to Cull

Razorsharp - I have heard about that study to. Will be good news if both Red's and Pine Martin numbers can be encouraged.

Island fears over 'trawler rats' (BBC News)

Just agree with an earlier comment - yes it is good that all the crew are safe and sound. Interesting info there coigach - it would be interesting research to conduct if the rats do get onto the island how long they last etc. Hopefully the hedgehog complaints wont be made in defence of the...

Island fears over 'trawler rats' (BBC News)

Well Peewit - i'll help!! ;) I wonder how many trawlers do contaion rats - human food and rats not a good mix in my opinion. I think they will definatly need some traps out - just hope the Animal Rights movement dont get wound up about protecting the site from these vermin.

To Cull or not to Cull

Amarillo - They prefer different habitats and also feed upon different types of seed. Also the reason the Greys were brought over in the first place was "because they were tamer" not my words but a talk by the Save Our Squirrel staff!!

To Cull or not to Cull

But you live in Northumberland and can see the demise of the Reds. Think about the communter belt around London - where those nice fluffy greys bring joy to people's lives!! even if they damage the woodland's and birds around them they wont want to hear of Game Keepers on the local estate...

To Cull or not to Cull

Greys and red's dont acctually compete it is the Pox virus which the greys carry that is the reason for the decline in red numbers, so a cure for that would be more beneficial in the long run really as would involve no termination of life. However I think the reds could be so badly battered...

To Cull or not to Cull

I dont think it would be possible to kill 3million grey squirrels - which is what a full cull would entail. I do think that there would be lot more protest from the public than some people think (Farnbrou John) as a lot of the people in the city especially the South will not have seen Red's...

To Cull or not to Cull

I agree - also it is a natural "organic" meat that could be put on to the market, therefore paying for the cull. Also I thought that the Red Squirrels dont acctually damage trees bar when shortage of food, unlike greys who ring trees as part of their diet. As for Grey's not being scared of...

Jesmond Dene, Armstrong Park and Heaton Park

    RSPB allows "wildfowling"

Twite I am not lumping together - I am asking can you lump them together because the unnecesary killing of a species like mink slowly for the fashion trade is intolerable. However the release of a species such as mink into the water ways to help protect them is naieve and shows the difference...

    RSPB allows "wildfowling"

Mooskibaby - the RSPB are protecting the birds on the site, read the post by robinm. Protecting the greater good, forsake a few birds for the protection of a greater area and more birds. Is that not better than protecting a small area while a lot more birds are blown apart?? Rozinante - what...

    RSPB allows "wildfowling"

Thank you Robinm - so can everyone who has been having a go at the RSPB now apologise and accept that sometimes they do know what is the best way to conserve birds on a particular site!! :C

    RSPB allows "wildfowling"

Saluki - agree completely with you. Also just wondering, the person who found the shot bird, if they are a "conservationist" as they describe them selves would I would have thought understood the logic of the agreement and know's it happens across the UK.

    RSPB allows "wildfowling"

So your saying that the RSPB should not allow it to occur on the reserve where it is monitored, controlled and limited but if it was to occur on any one else's private land then they could shoot as much as they want and not have it licenced. Any one else see an issue there........ The RSPB...

Mad idea for a anti Squirrel device

Hey Kathy and Alan Thank you for the descriptions - I would like to see/have a go at some point. Does sound quite easy but would want to have someone show/give me hand the first time. :t:

Mad idea for a anti Squirrel device

We are in the same camp Alan (though a minority) bar I can not skin a rabbit or a squirrel for that matter.

Mad idea for a anti Squirrel device

Alan I apologise - I just assumed in the era of Chicken Nuggents (containing 100% no chicken) that you might not. ;) Aparently they taste quite nice from what I have heard though not tried myself but wouldnt mind trying. :eat: As for crude but effective - VERY!! :t:
