    Yorkshire Birding

There definitely are peregrines on York Minster! Best place to look is the north face of the north-west tower from Dean's garden. If you are on Twitter, you can follow @yorkperegrines for regular updates Ollie

    Yorkshire Birding

Hi Polly, Lots of farmland birds around the York area, which can be very easy to find, feel free to PM me for any local information. Also, things like golden plover, lapwing and other breeding waders should be back up on the moors if you have time, which is quite easy to do between York and the...

    Yorkshire Birding

Hi all, for anyone planning to view the gulls around York. The owner at Rufforth has asked for no further access to the airfield. He says this is due to poor parking and trespass although I think it's more due to the increased numbers of birders lately. Regardless the police will be called now...

    Sudan Golden Sparrow (Passer luteus)

Hi all, Back from Western Sahara now. ANI were kind enough to take us out to Bir Anzarane after the initial report of a single Sudan Golden Sparrow. We spoke to them after about the probable interest from European birders, they are more than happy to act as tour operators, either on an ad hoc...

    Aousserd

Hi all, Just reading a few trip reports, there were some suggestions that a petrol station and maybe some form of accommodation had been built or was being built in Aousserd. Can anyone confirm or deny this please? Thanks Ollie

    New to Birding

Hi Minty, Uni is public, so people wander all over. Lots of people bird around the uni, particularly the Hes East campus. The tilmire, behind the uni is rarely watched, and can hold some good birds. Also Askham Bog YWT is very easy to get to, can be ok for birds (treecreeper, redpolls, marsh...

    New to Birding

There are several decent sites around York (certainly where you could boost you're life list), try the university, particularly the lake on the Hes East campus. Goldcrest are migrating at the moment so are popping up anywhere and everywhere, learning the call (from RSPB or xeno-canto websites)...

    Yorkshire Birding

Please bare in mind that Skipwith is a sensitive site with several scarce ground nesting species plus other sensitive wildlife under immense pressure from dog walkers and etc. It will be very difficult to find woodlark at this time of year, but please don't be tempted to go off the paths...

    Western Scotland birding

Hi all, I'm going walking around Fort William for a weekend in late July with my non-birder Dad. Can anyone recommend any 'easy' nature sights/places nearby, within 2 hrs or so? Something like a regular site for eagles or otters that are pretty reliable, or just a good general area to try...

    1st Tyke Meet of 2014?

Yeah, to be honest Michael, I'm 25, and the guys I go birding with are around the same age. I can't remember the last time we went down without one of us slipping and falling on the path. If your group are elderly, best not to go

    1st Tyke Meet of 2014?

No it's awful. And the views are rubbish cos ywt still haven't repaired swantail, and the water is miles off Tower hide.

    1st Tyke Meet of 2014?

Yes, Great Lake for wildfowl. Park opposite great lake in small c/pk (be careful getting in to it, try the top two entrances, the bottom one is all pothole), and take the path along the side of the lake. You have to get to the bend to see the whole of the lake, and most of the diving species are...

    1st Tyke Meet of 2014?

Yeah think the autocorrect on my phone garbled that a bit. I'm not going to be around, but can I suggest those keen to see woodcock either start a bit earlier and try Wheldrake woods, or go there for dusk. The gulls fly over the Bailey bridge (by the car park) to roost and one of the bird race...

    1st Tyke Meet of 2014?

Yes, but ywt haven't bothered to rebuild swaHeyntail yet from the 2012/2013 flooding. I wouldn't bother with Wheldrake car park if the only reason you're going is for woodcock and not going to get there til 8. The latest we had one coming back in was 07.40 on bird race, and got will be a bit...

    Yorkshire Birding

It's the birdrace on Sunday, so will be out all day both days, probably a lot in the valley. Can let you know what's about, but having been fairly dry and warm most of winter, hopes aren't high. There are plenty of ruff, dunlin, whoopers, pintail etc around though, and a fair few pink-feet being...

But it will be full of photos from the far east for the foreseeable. There aren't really any websites atm, but you could get on the York ornithology club email list to get sightings, but not many people out birding atm

Thanks for the info, not sure I'm going to get up to Parfuri, but will hopefully manage a day at Mkhuze, so maybe jam in there

Does anyone know if there is a reliable site in Kruger for Pel's fishing owl at the moment? Thanks in advance, Ollie

    NE Birders in their 20's.

Yeah sorry I can't be more helpful at the moment but I'm spending every waking hour of free time birding the coast, and the other two I mentioned are away. I'll probably be birding more locally by December, maybe you and Andy could find one other person and do the bird race in January.
