    Passage Feeding Frenzy?

Thanks for your response Mary. Quite surprised that nobody else seems to have any other comment about this type of bird feeding behaviour during migration. Either everyone else thinks this is just normal or it's even more of a mystery than I imagined! Who knows....

    Passage Feeding Frenzy?

Today was fabulous...........joining the normal array of finches, tits and thrushes were around 30 chiffchaffs, a male blackcap and a small group of spotted flycatchers. The unusual visitors were all feeding mainly on insects. Am I right in thinking this is a passage feeding group?

Red Kite between Swindon & Marlborough

I have seen Red Kites many times before, usually in Wales and occasionally in Oxfordshire, but this morning I saw the first one I can remember seeing in Wiltshire. It was circling over the Ridgeway south of Swindon and being tracked closely for quite a time by a Buzzard who clearly wasn't happy...

Top Five most well camouflaged birds that I've seen: 1. Papuan Frogmouth - stood in a boat with a local guy pointing at a tree and saying look it's there - looked at the tree for 10 minutes before I could see where it was. 2. Red Necked Nightjar - nearly stood on one in Portugal it was so...

    filedfares & redwings

We've had up to 30 Redwing and half a dozen Fieldfare (plus a couple of Bramblings) in our garden most days for the last three weeks. Much better than last year when we hardly saw any all winter - but very similar to our first winter here (two years ago) - when we were absolutely astonished at...

    Birds in Your Garden

Time for an update. Now up to 44 species - we had a pair of Mallard in the Spring looking for a nest site (42) - we had a Kestrel (43) in late summer hovering over the garden looking for one of our field voles (we have a family in the garden) and last week we had our first Brambling (44)...

Linacre Reservoirs in November - Anything there?

Well, as nobody suggested anywhere better, we tried Linacre. What a fabulous place - really interesting water management system! Admittedly, we didn't see anything spectacular - though treecreeper, nuthatch and female brambling were round the car park and many of the usual suspects on the...

Linacre Reservoirs in November - Anything there?

We are looking for a place to go near Chesterfield later this week. It would be good to have a mix of habitats - someone suggested that Linacre was good for both woodland & water.

3 Winter visitors & one unusual passerby

We are very lucky. This is our third winter in this house and we've had redwings & fieldfares every year. The brambling was our first in this garden. As for the ring ouzel - I'm starting to doubt what I saw. One of my field guides says beware of blackbirds with white markings - could it have...

3 Winter visitors & one unusual passerby

Today we've been blessed with several Redwings, one Fieldfare, one Brambling and what appeared to be either a passing or an overwintering Ring Ouzel - browner than in summer but still with a distinct pale crescent across its chest. Do they overwinter? Steve B.

    Birds in Your Garden

At last, species number 41..........though not an unusual bird, it was great to see a pair of Pied Wagtails feeding of the myriad of flies around our roof (I hope that doesn't mean we have some sort of dead animal or bird in our roof space). Now looking for number 42. We still haven't had a...

Now I've investigated Falklands and Galapagos, I'm starting to get excited about the whole prospect of South America. Has anyone done any birding in Chile?

    Birds in Your Garden

We are now up to 40. We have large numbers of Woodpigeon and Collared Dove every day - hence the regular Sparrowhawk - but today, for the first time, I spotted a Stock Dove on the tray of the bird feeder.

Iain We haven't had a Goldcrest since we moved house - even though we have several varieties of conifer in the garden. We used to get one regularly in our previous garden. Steve

    Birds in Your Garden

Hi Liz - sounds as though you've had loads of young in your garden with juvenile bluejays and fledgling cardinals. Are you sighing about the Common Grackle because its just too common and a bit boring? We all have those - your Grackle is my Blackbird.

    Birds in Your Garden

Of course I don't mind. Now I need to update my list with your new category. Most unusual visitor: Grey Wagtail. Plus latest news, currently taking place on the back lawn, Sparrowhawk eating Collared Dove. It may be nature at work - but it's not very pleasant to watch - even though the...
