save the coast = set the ocean on fire...?

Seabirds won't really go inland very much. More likely they'll just head out to sea and into the danger zone. And, yes, that would be massive stress to the birds, to the point of possibly causing them to die of exhaustion. Recall that during the Cultural Revolution, Mao declared birds the cause...

Several ID's please, central Michigan, USA

You're correct on Nos.1 & 2. 3 could be an Indigo Bunting but with so much backlighting it's hard to make out any features. No idea on the other guy.

    Printer colors completely off

Hi there, Would someone be so kind to point me to someplace that can help me configure my printer preperly again? I have a Canon Pixma 9000 which used to print beautifully. But as of late the colors are all wrong. Everything is too purple, too dark, too strong in contrast. I am at my wits' end...

A few IDs - Bavaria, Germany

Thanks, Andrew. Could you perhaps explain your ID re: 2 a bit? How long do juv. GSW's keep their juvenile plumage? Given the time of year I did not consider juv. GSW as a possibility.

A few IDs - Bavaria, Germany

Hi there, Had some trouble with a few IDs while birding the lower Inn in Bavaria last week. All of the below were seen in a marshy wet riparian forest with extensive reedbeds along the Inn river. Thanks in advance! Misha http://img193.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=img0142crs.jpg My guesses: 1...

Please ID this Swallow type bird? =)

You may have googled pictures of the European subspecies which is nearly white on the underside and only has a small red breast patch as opposed to the darker North American subspecies which is what struck your window.

    Weird Warblers - Chicago, IL

Two difficult ones for me. No.1 was seen on 5/20. It's the only pic I got of this one. It suddenly landed right in front of me and then flew off. The pic is uncropped. Female Black-throated Blue? No.2 was taken this morning. I initially thought female/immature Magnolia, but the striping on...

Shorebirds - San Elijo Lagoon, Southern CA

Hi people, Was in San Diego last week and went out to San Elijo Lagoon twice to see some birds. Wasn't entirely sure on these. Are these Short-billed Dowitchers? http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/3501/img0968crszw5.jpg http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/4563/img0976crsjz0.jpg...

Thanks. Should have thought of Savi's. The area is supposed to be a breeding ground for Savi's.

    Lübeck, Germany Warblers

Hi people, I always have trouble with European warblers. All of these pics were taken last Wednesday at the Schellbruch wetland preserve near Lübeck, Germany. Can't decide whether these are Reed Warblers or Marsh Warblers. No.1: http://img129.imageshack.us/img129/9426/img0072crsis9.jpg...

San Diego: Townsend's Solitaire or W. Bluebird?

I see why you would say that, but in my recollection this bird was a little too large for Junco. I could be wrong, though. Also, wouldn't the bill be pink on a juv. Junco? Here are two more (terrible) pictures of the same individual. Maybe this helps...

San Diego: Townsend's Solitaire or W. Bluebird?

Hi guys, I have one more from my trip to San Diego. The following pic is also from Palomar Mountain State Park. The tail seems long for a Western Bluebird juvenile (of which there were plenty) and also I see no hint of blue. Bill also seems different. Was wondering if it's perhaps a Townsend's...

A Few San Diego Area IDs

Thanks everyone for the quick responses! I have a question about this ID. I guess San Diego would be outside the LBWP's range. BUt what completely threw me off is that in the Sibley, it shows Nutall's as having a red hind crown. Both of the woodpeckers in my pics had pretty much the entire...

A Few San Diego Area IDs

Hi there, I'm having trouble with a few IDs from the San Diego area. All taken last Thursday and Friday. 1-3 were taken at San Elijo Lagoon, the second pic under 1 was taken at Rancho Bernardo and the rest were taken at Palomar Mountain State Park. 1. Ladder-backed Woodpecker? Pics show two...
