What would you want in a sound ID app?

Steve, Just received a cheap wireless one at £7.99 one from amazon and trying to get the microphone to speak to the receiver which plugs into the lightning socket of my iPhone. Couldn’t get it to work “out of the box”, so charging the microphone to see if it improves

What would you want in a sound ID app?

I assumed that there would be a plug-in external microphone available to enhance recording. edit - there are lots on Amazon

What would you want in a sound ID app?

The current limitations I’m currently finding are more to do with the poor "recording" available via my iPhone’s built in microphone. I can often hear a song but the phone/merlin cannot - yes, it’s a hardware issue and probably easily solved. Overall, Merlin seems mainly "fit for purpose"...

Terrible Swarovski customer service for NL coating failure - No response for a month, then a $50 charge for expedited service

The customer service I have received from Swarovski Austria has been fabulous. If I were you I would have been severely tempted to copy your e-mail exchange to the customer service team at Austria. Your local team are giving the company a bad name.

Should I buy ELs now or wait for more new product releases this year?

This isn’t a recommendation of any sort, purely information. Here’s a pair for sale https://wessexphoto.com/product/swarovski-el-8x32-wb/

    My first pair, help please.

I would suggest trying second hand binoculars too, assuming that you are happy that your local optics shop is reputable

    Digiscoping advice

No, the eyepiece bit is straightforward. Fitting my iPhone took a bit more common sense than I had available at the time and the camera lenses are surrounded by a little raised area. Once I had overcome that “problem” (entirely due to lack of joined up thinking by me) it was fine.

    Phonescoping with ED78/82

I have just bought this phone adapter from Viking. It’s fiddly but results are OK, I imagine with some practice they’ll be shareable. Fits most phones and most eyepieces You’ll notice that it’s inexpensive, so if it doesn’t work….. https://www.vikingoptical.com/universal-smart-phone-adapter/...

    Digiscoping advice

I have recently bought one of these from Viking Optic. Fits many phones and many eyepieces. It’s inexpensive, so if it doesn’t work it isn’t a tragedy. It’s taking a bit of practice to get used to it though https://www.vikingoptical.com/universal-smart-phone-adapter/ I imagine there will be...

Is there such a thing as tagging along a birding tour group for a few days?

Oh yes, I was thinking along the lines of organising something with the company or guide. As you say, easy to surreptitiously sidle a few paces behind a tour group - I did it myself with a group on a cross Biscay ferry (The Company of Whales I think) while their guide pointed out Sperm Whale...

Is there such a thing as tagging along a birding tour group for a few days?

The last two tours I attended were full (as in no room on the bus). I imagine that you might be able to tag along at a particular reserve or special site but I doubt it would be cheap.

Nikon ED78 vs Opticron ES80 GA ED v3

I can’t help as I have never looked through any of the ‘scopes you mention. However, 99.99% of reputable optics dealers who stock a ‘scope that you are interested in will definitely let you examine one and use it (under their supervision). This will allow you to make sure that (if you really...

    My tablet dilemma

I guess you could buy a small (in size) large (in capacity) power bank and when your fire tablet goes winky-wonky plug it in to that. I know that doesn’t fix your problem but seems like a reasonable work around and cheaper than buying an iPad mini.

    Celestron Spotting Scope advice please?

Welcome to the club I wasn’t even aware that Celestron made spotting ‘scopes so can’t offer any insight, sorry. My only recommendation is that you travel to a physical shop if possible and try the 'scopes before you buy.
