    West Midlands/Warwickshire local patches.

Ok. Yesterday morning I was driving to a meeting near Dudley about 9.50/10ish and I happened to glance up when something caught my eye. I had a flock of c100 small looking geese flying over in a v formation. Obviously I couldn't stop & couldn't make out any plumage as driving, but I thought they...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Sturs photos were clearly Common Crossbills, I don't think anyone was proposing them as Parrots. Sturs was merely asking for opinion, these did not resemble any of the 'interesting' birds in the flock that Ian, Steve, Martyn myself and others have been along to have a look at. I think we would...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

There is some interesting Parrot Crossbill discussion on this thread: http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=272761 Whilst the Holt birds resemble 'classic' birds, I have been reflecting on my observations from the other day and found it more helpful to compare them with the Budby Common...

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Velvet Scoters Here are the aforementioned record images of the two Velvet Scoter as they departed Blithfield yesterday (taken by Martyn Yapp). Sadly the birds seemed very nervous and unsettled. Incredible to see, but very disappointing that they left before everyone could get there.

Rare and Scarce Birds in Staffordshire

Present yesterday morning at 9am in the same clear fell as last year (south of Startley Lane SK015143). The bird was on the tall tree stump visible from the road and later moved further down into the valley. Image by Martyn Yapp.

At least it was a non-native species, could have been a lot worse ;-) Hope the damage to your car wasn't too serious. Did the insurance company pay out?

    Norfolk birding

I find that non-birders often get the size completely off - as per descriptions given to me by friends that I have to decipher! Also I know Penny's friends did not mention a long tail, but often non-birders don't have a concept of what is a long or short tail and notice colour - the colours...
