    Another Calidrid

A White-rumped Sandpiper was found at Marielvale a few weeks back by one Richard Montinaro, can't tell if this is it though!

    Dubai, Thursday 9th

Not a great deal about. A juv Collared Pratincole at the pivot fields, as well as a Steppe Grey Shrike and 2 juv Isabelline Shrike sp. Mamzar park was similarly quiet, with the exception of a first winter RB Flycatcher. I tried desperately to distinguish whether or not it was a Red-throated as...

Ah, Wimpey Pits, a real tragedy. Let me tell you the story, are you sitting comfortably? then I'll begin. Years ago, when Dubai's roads were first being built, the company Wimpey Construction had one of the contracts. They sourced a lot of the material locally, some 10km out into the desert...

    World Birding

I've lived in East and South Africa and visited Brazil, so from this list I'd vote for Costa Rica. My next trips, however, are to Oman (November) and Nepal (January), and I'm looking forward to them immensely, especially Nepal.

The safaris were mainly large mammal related, but as we were walking there were a lot of opportunities to educate the tourists about the finer points of Cisticola plumage, whether they like it or not! I'm teaching at a college. Who's your mate? There's a reasonable chance I know him, or at...

Yes, The Safari companion is excellent isn't it? I used to conduct walking safaris in Zambia, and it was always the book that I consulted the most.

    Ground-nesting Bee-eaters

In Botswana in 1999 (I think) I found a colony of 1000+ Southern Carmines nesting like this on a river bank. An amazing sight, and plenty of predators to boot.

I'm also new here, and am surprised you got no response. For anyone else planning a trip I'd say that Newman's is OK (depending on the version), but SASOL is much better for the harder groups (especially Larks). Roberts is more of a handbook, and isn't used much by SA birders for identification...

    Shotgun mics

Hi all, newbie calling. I'd just like to ask if anyone knows which shotgun mic would be best for bird sound recording? I'd be using it primarily for playback so portability and rugedness are factors. Thanks
