    Bird Food Recalls

On April 3, 2008, I received word, researched, and posted (http://www.bornagainbirdwatcher.com/2008/04/scotts-wild-bird-food-products.html) that Scott's was ordering at least a portion of three of their wild bird food brands pulled from the shelves due to their inclusion of an EPA unapproved...

    Optolyth ViaNova Binoculars

Thanks ceasar. Yerington is about a fifteen hour drive from Scappoose and about two hours (at least) from Reno. I'll wait until I'm in Reno next then consider the trip. They seem awfully expensive for a product that gets almost no attention in the US birding press and just about as little in...

    Optolyth ViaNova Binoculars

Being here in the U.S. where Optolyth is an unknown brand, does anyone have any experience they can share regarding the Optolyth ViaNova 7x42mm or 8x56mm models? They are quite expensive but seldom are they discussed in forums or in magazine reviews.

    Difference Between Leupold Bino's

Thanks Steve. If I recall correctly there was an airspace between the CaF2 objective lens and the objective doublet lens. However I have not been in charge of the product for almost eight months now so it may have changed. Made in the U.S.A.? Well, I always assume that products that have "Made...

    Difference Between Leupold Bino's

Lenses truecolors, They have one total HD lens per channel and it is one of the objective lenses in that lens grouping. Adding an extra lens in a channel would have required a complete redesign of the entire optical system.

Leupold Leupold Katmai 6x32 same as Opticron Traveller 6x32?

Focus dial position Well, the focus dial on the Traveler is forward of the bridge between the objective lenses and the Katmai has the focus dial between the eyepeice lenses. While there might be a coating difference on the prisms, I think the duck analogy applies.

    Difference Between Leupold Bino's

A few answers Sitkaspruce, Good questions. As the developer of both the original and the HD models when I was the product line manager for all binoculars and spotting scopes, as well as the birding market as a whole, for Leupold, I think I can help. (Full disclosure: I no longer work for...

    leoplod katmai 8x32 help plz

Katmai clarrification A bit of clarrification on the Katmai models, their prism materials, and other items of possible interest. The confusion on the prism glass is a result of a recent upgrade. The prisms are now BAK4. The roof prism is phase coated and the auxiliary prism is treated with a...

Thanks! Thanks for the advice. I have ordered one from Orion and I am contacting the dealer in the UK for information about shipping an Opticron product to the US.

    Opticron 8x32mm LE monocular

Has anyone used the Opticron 8x32mm LE monocular? They are not sold here in the U.S. so I can't try one for myself. The specifications look pretty good and I'm thinking of buying one online (if I can find a retailer willing to ship it to the states). How is the optical quality? Also, as the...

    Nuremberg in March

Hello all, I will be visiting Nuremberg for a trade show during the second week in March. I have made this trip twice before and I know that my birding time will be limited to areas farily near my hotel (Maritim) mornings before the event. I will not have a car. Previous trips have not yielded...

    Leupold Yosemite 8x30

Why 6x first? I'll tell you... Sorry to jump in so abruptly. I just thought I might be able to help with a few open questions I read here. I appreciate the ascription of such savvy marketing foresight to the creation of the 6x30mm. Actually, it was created primarily out of love and an...

    Dear Mr. and Mrs. Leupold

Ask and ye shall receive. Just released and on the market for sale as I type this. I know the 6x30mm was a bit low on magnification for many - it was created for my daughter (age five then). The idea that anyone with a smaller IPD could not comfortably use binoculars, something I learned form...

    Ornithology Courses?

Cornell course alumnus says... Hello Whitewings, I finished the Cornell course last year and was extremely happy I took the time and made the effort to do it. I too am a bit dubious of most distance learning courses but this one is quite good. Not only is the text book both well written and...

    Birding quickly in South Korea

I will be making a quick business trip to Korea in August. Not much time will be available for birding but I am not going to miss any chance I get. I'd really like to communicate with anyone familiar with birding in the central Seoul area, especially anyone who, like me, birds during business...
