    Glasses (spectacles) with binoculars

So, if you're using bifocals/varifocals are you always looking through the distance part of the lens when looking through bins or are you varying your view with the distance as you would without bins?

    Glasses (spectacles) with binoculars

Gutted that no-one has answered this for you as I've been struggling with the same question and found this thread by search. I'm currently only using glasses for reading but am also getting slightly short-sighted and I'm struggling with both near and far focus with my bins (whether or not I...

    Herring or Glaucous in Aberaeron

    But you agree it’s a gull? :)

    Herring or Glaucous in Aberaeron

Having cropped it, I don’t think this helps much but for what it’s worth, here it is.

    Herring or Glaucous in Aberaeron

Thanks - good point - I did indeed reduce the size to meet BF’s requirements. I’ll crop and re-add but I think Dr W is right anyway.

    Herring or Glaucous in Aberaeron

Hi Delia Hope all is well with you. I believe the Dolphin pic is so bad it could even be a partially submerged Glaucous Gull - see what you think. :)

Help me complete my British owl list!

He means that he knows one site, Andy, not that he knows one egger. His post is silent on that point. :)

    Herring or Glaucous in Aberaeron

I was definitely giving credit to your improvement there. :) Thanks, that sounds right then, no holiday Glaucous for me. PS if you think that pic is bad you should see this morning’s dolphin pics. PPS It’s very embarrassing to notice I haven’t given Birdforum any money since 2007. I hope...

    Herring or Glaucous in Aberaeron

You do surprise me - I thought it was a very fine photo, along the lines of your earlier efforts. The bill colour matched the bills of the various adult Herring Gulls in the harbour ie yellow with a lower red dot and it didn’t look noticeably heavier than the Herrings (although obvs they were...

    Herring or Glaucous in Aberaeron

Hi Sorry for shocking pic quality from mobile phone. Any views on whether this bird is leucistic Herring or possible Glaucous or hybrid of some kind? Aberaeron harbour 10am this morning. Thanks Helen

    Kingfishers

Lol. You've obviously never been to Peterborough :)

    Kingfishers

I see them most days here. But I suppose not many Brummies would admit Peterborough to be the Midlands.

    Birds fae Torry

Your photos are getting a lot better than when I used to visit more often. I guess Dr Grubb doesn't have as much to scoff about these days?

How many bird books have you got?

    38. But that includes 3 copies of Collins, so 36 really. I feel emasculated.. Oh, wait ...

Are bird names supposed to be written in capital letters?

Oh lordy, I can now see this thread going on for another ten pages on the appropriate use of hyphenation in modern English. *finds the appropriate chapter in 'Eats, Shoots and Leaves', loads the pistols ...

    First signs of Spring 2015

A House Sparrow carrying nesting material into the creepers on the mill wall this morning. Also, the sun felt like Spring sunshine today - please don't ask me for a scientific definition of that - just believe me.

    Your Worst Blockers

I've still never seen a Dotterel. They're annual in the fens near here but always bugger off before I get there and my two attempts in Scotland failed. Also Sabine's Gull - and as I don't do much sea watching at the moment, I'm saving that one up for my retirement.

    First signs of Spring 2015

The flock of sparrows that winters in a bush by my car park appears to have dispersed.

Are bird names supposed to be written in capital letters?

Having thought a bit and read everyone's opinions, I may be diverging from the GSG. The trouble is that talking about a robin in your garden (which is the kind of usage that GSG was catering for), is not the same as talking about a Lanceolated Warbler in the field. I think birders do need the...

Are bird names supposed to be written in capital letters?

Of course, when I supported lower case, I wasn't promoting the non-use of capitals for titles like user names. I'm sure the GSG would be appalled :). (Hi, you. Hope life's going well?)

Are bird names supposed to be written in capital letters?

The Guardian Style Guide, who is my guru in these matters says lower case. https://mobile.twitter.com/guardianstyle/status/65740870946795520 Now that I know that, I've got 8 years of post-editing to do. :)
