    John's Mammals 2024

Midge yapped at me last night for not feeding her quickly enough (admittedly I'd chosen to feed both Hoppity and Toff before her but that was for her own good as Toff at least would happily rob her) - I've never known another fox give me an oral "hurry up" before and this isn't the first time...

    California, 2024

Having been part of a class blown up by one science teacher and taught by another who set his tie on fire with a Bunsen burner as well as sitting on one (unlit) he'd put on his stool out of the way and burning his fingers demonstrating the plasticity of heated sulphur (the two were known...

NEast London…A few sps from last night, if anyone can shed some light?

I reckon 2 and 5 are the same, probably Scoparia ambigualis or another of that genus. 3 and maybe 4 are Pandemis sp but don't ask me which: perhaps not the same unless 4 is very worn. No idea about the wing vibrating noctuid. John

What makes someone a 'Birding Legend'?

I remember someone asking me (at the top end of St Mary's) why I wasn't heading for the airfield for the Buff-bellied Pipit and replying that I was waiting for CDRH to confirm it: the birder's response was "who do you think found it!!" At which point I hit the afterburners. John

    June Moths

The temperature seemed likely to drop across the night but I thought early at least I'd catch something so trapped again last night. I was rewarded with a pretty micro tick, Phtheochroa rugosana (bloody Greeks, how the hell are you supposed to pronounce that, a raspberry?) and NFY Flame and...

One of the rarest Birds of Prey in the United States

    Nice pic though! John

    Springwatch 2024

It's a very local effect caused by the proximity of Bournemouth to bits of excellent lowland heath. Future apocalypse is unlikely to be down to this particular behaviour. John
  8. Farnboro John

    June Moths

Still on my wanted list altogether! John

Anyone else like Birds AND planes?

Tip off from my brother a few days ago that one of the two-seat Spitfires that give rides in exchange for massive amounts of cash was working out of Blackbushe Airport, once RAF Hartford Bridge and home to Mitchells and Mosquitos. It's only about three miles away so I scooted up there and caught...

    June Moths

Anyway, last night was a bit cooler but still some moths: NFY Small Dusty Wave, numbers were three Treble Lines and six Heart and Dart: not much else of interest, Silver Y best. John

    June Moths

Looks like a Poplar Hawk-moth on something illegal! John
  13. Farnboro John

What makes someone a 'Birding Legend'?

Bird finding (from knowing where in the landscape will attract and hold birds to lynx eyed quickness seawatching) and encyclopaedic identification in the field, giving quick accurate intelligible directions and participating in a human and humane way. John

What makes someone a 'Birding Legend'?

    Ability and humility. John

A few unknowns from NEast London last night.

Second one you must have forgotten the size because it is surely a Heart and Dart: third one maybe Straw Dot? Not sure about the first one, sorry. Cheers John

    Dotterel

I've seen Dotterel on the tops but it was between Cairn Gorm and Ben Macdui, not anywhere near the Cairnwell area. It was some years ago, as well. At this time of year they are breeding and may already have chicks, so do not attempt to get close despite the reputation of Dotterel for being...

Alaska: Birds and Mammals of the Great North

Off the top of my head, I reckon Bald Eagles, being fish eagles used to getting wet in the course of hunting activities, probably ignore bad weather more readily than Golden Eagles engaged in more active hunting for which tip-top plumage condition including dryness could be the difference...

    Springwatch 2024

I found another website claiming there have been several records thought to involve ferries or lorries or both. I should think the likely areas for colonisation would be the South-east ports and the Channel Tunnel vehicle stations. John

    Springwatch 2024

One of my Edible Dormouse pictures on Springwatch tonight, which was nice. Anyone know the story on Garden Dormouse in the UK as Iolo confidently asserted? John

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

Apologies, that was not my meaning. It is rather my contention that the RBBP casts its net too widely and is for that reason a poor guide to changes in the breeding bird landscape. John
  21. Farnboro John

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

Past reports include e.g. single Red-necked Grebe summering. One bird cannot breed and shouldn't constitute a record for RBBP. Mind you without such fare their reports would be thin. John
  22. Farnboro John

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

I've let my memory churn it around a bit and IIRC the supposed story was that it was in South Hampshire and heavily suppressed (which would have credibility for the area as well as being entirely justifiable for the alleged record). John

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

Pretty sure Woodchat has at least attempted already but can't remember the exact year. John
  24. Farnboro John

    June Moths

And they're off.... Heart and Darts that is, 12 of them in the trap this morning, biggest single species catch of the year not made in the living room with the vacuum cleaner: other numbers much lower but three Setaceous Hebrew Characters and two each of Treble Lines and Crambus lathionellus...

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?
