Thanks for the replies, they have given me some options to think about

Tripod and head for a D500 and 500mm f5.6 lens

Thanks for your helpful reply John. I hadn't considered the damping effect of the mass of the bigger camera and longer lens. I've gone to the lighter setup because of need through age! I'm not disappointed, getting some impressive flight shots hand holding but occasionally I think I might have...

Tripod and head for a D500 and 500mm f5.6 lens

I have changed from a Canon 1dx and 500mm f4 lens to a Nikon D500 and the new PF 500mm f5.6 lens, considerably lighter to carry around. The weight of the camera and lens is only 2.2 Km. I need a tripod with a gimbal head for bird photography. Thought about a Wimberley Sidekick with a good...

    Yorkshire Birding

An abundance of Marsh Harriers at Blacktoft Sands yesterday.

    Yorkshire Birding

The RSPB reserve at Blacktoft is lucky enough to have what appears to be a breeding pair of Montagu's Harriers, only visible from the far eastern hide. They are usually very distant and I was lucky to see them yesterday for a brief period. The photos are very heavily cropped so not the best...

Canon 7D Mk II is announced and available for pre-order

The LPE6 battery is fully compatible with 7DII but has slightly lower mAh capacity than the new LPE6N battery that Canon recommend for the 7dII, 3.5% less mAh. Be wary of having the GPS system activated on your 7dII, it eats the juice!

    Yorkshire Birding

A few shots of the Eastern Black Redstart at Scalby today. It took a while for it to appear but then it came back a few times to it's favourite spot, Norwich Close. Light was very harsh but beggars can't be choosers!

    Durham Birding

The presence of the bird was reported promptly on Twitter the same day it appeared and regular updates were available on TBC website. A few of my photos are attached.

    Birding at Loch of Kinnordy

We will be staying near Pitlochry in early May planning to visit Loch of the Lowes and Kinnordy. I don't know the area and wondered if anybody could point to any links to other bird watching sites in that area between Pitlochry and the east coast. I already have Gordon Hamlett's excellent book...

    Durham Birding

Thanks, Mar, John and Ron for the comments. I guess I was lucky to have decent light although a bit harsh at times giving some blown highlights. Renton

Kingfisher at Low Barns Had a visit with grandchildren to Low Barns today hoping to see Kingfishers. We weren't disappointed with birds visiting the posts in front of the west hide a number of times during the morning. Good views also of Jay and Great Spotted Woodpeckers, both adult and juvenile.

...and a few more shots of the harrier taken yesterday.

    Durham Birding

I think if you have a number of hours spare you'll be virtually guaranteed to see it. The best viewing point is on the north side of the A689 at Winyard. The big mound with the monument is on the south side of the road. Pull off the road at the roundabout road sign about two hundred yards short...

    DPP sharpnedd issue

I've noticed the same problem. When you use the crop tool the cropped image appears as "Fit image to screen" and the image appears a lot softer. As soon as you go into 50% or 100% view you get the full resolution back, ie sharp image again. I don't think it affects the resolution of the cropped...

    Reeling Grasshopper Warbler

I sat for a number of hours listening to this bird without seeing it. The next day the bird promptly popped up in front of me and I grabbed a bag full of shots before it dived back into the brambles.

    Durham Birding

Swallows and one Sandmartin resting up and preening on the fence wires at Seaton common yesterday morning. One of the Swallows had a ring and I think I made out digits 949.

    Durham Birding

A few shots of one of the Grasshopper Warblers singing along the path at Dormans pool on Thursday. The bird popped up in front of me at the screen after a number of hours sitting listening to it.

    Canon 1.4x converter compatibility

I have sold my converter to a guy with a 70-200mm f4 lens and it fails to autofocus when used with either a 450D or a 40D camera. I find this strange since I know it worked fine on my 500mm f4. Is there a compatibilty issue with this lens/ camera combination when using the 1.4x converter?
