    Birdguides new system

Since search only works on recognised species names, I can't see a way to search for reports of "Eagle" or "Albatross" or "Frigatebird", which are often reported without assignment to species.

    Birdguides new system

And another whine about search ... When searching for older records, the old site's search had pre-populated options like past year, or "since birdguides began" .... now you're going to need 10 keystrokes to search the database for past records, and I can't see any way to re-create the search...

    Birdguides new system

Found the search to be pretty unusable. When restricting to a sub-location to a country, it wouldn't recognize "United Kingdom", "UK" or "Great Britain" ... I would have thought lists of countries would come pre-equipped with synonyms. You also don't seem to be able to enter a species name to...

Comment by 'Paul Bright-Thomas' in media 'REDSTART( i think)'

Hi Derek, that appears to be a female Stonechat. Redstarts are summer migrants and most are leaving UK by August or September. Regards, Paul.

Additional Criteria to ID Pallid Swift on Photos

Winterton vs T5:T4 The Cleveland thread and the (new to me) identification criteria - T5:T4, bill angle and covert patterns - being highlighted by it are really interesting. I wonder how the new test will work with another autumn swift that was flip-flopped ... see...

    October Thrush, southern England

I photographed this thrush sp on a bright morning of moderate passage in mid-october. Some have suggested it is a Fieldfare, but the absence of white on belly or vent, and the lack of contrast between underwing coverts and remiges doesn't fit for me.

    Birder's place-names

Birdguides today reported a couple of Caspian Gulls in Staffordshire at a site called Silverdale Colliery, with the specific location being a part of the site called "The Void". This got me thinking that I'd like to hear about any locations for birding that won't be found on any map, the...

    *Earthflight* on Thurs 20.00pm-21.00pm on 29th Dec 2011 BBC1

Watching this week's Europe episode right now, and two things have unsettled me: Spring migration of geese included groups of Brent Geese going north across the channel - they all seemed to be immature, no adults in the sequence I saw, which doesn't sound like the right age profile for...

    Backwater Birding - Seaton, Devon

Dear Simon and Sue, congratulations on your identification of a marvellous bird! Although there were quite a number of Red-footed Falcon records throughout Britain this Spring, it's still a very scarce species, and a late autumn record is even more unusual. Furthermore, there was a recent...
