Cyprus - gulling and shooting January / February?

Hi. We are thinking of going to Cyprus gulling, to Lady’s Mile and other sites, at the end of this month, for two weeks. Is there likely to be much shooting going on there as I believe it is open season at that time? Also any other tips please? Thank you very much.

    Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in Scotland?

Where I grew up in West Berkshire we had Lessers breeding. They, along with Greaters, frequented the bird table 'all the time'. I can't recall having feeders as such, but they were certainly feeding on food put out. Maybe their habits have changed though - that was fifty years ago!

One more / last / final Vancouver / August, gull ID please.

I understand exactly what you mean. As Callie does not appear to interbreed with Glauc. winged (I may be wrong) I put the pale primaries down to wear! Otherwise I wondered about an AHGU x Callie hybrid … however it seems it’s the other race of the latter (that I have never seen) that does so -...

Hi. I have been trying to join the Gulls of North America Facebook group but cannot get to join as nobody replies! Hence I have one more ID question please. A much better photo this time. Vancouver BC. August. Note the pale iris. Thanks. Keith.

    Southwold Caspian Gull? #4&5

Meant with the very best of intentions: I agree with Butty, however you can only ever be ‘pretty sure’ if you know the basics. This has been said time after time in birding, ‘it is absolutely essential that you learn to identify the common species first’, Herring Gulls in this case. So, let’s...

    bird id caspian gull

A 'likely' juvenile Caspian (or Casp. hybrid) Malcolm but as it is impossible to see the greater covert centres / pattern - particularly the inner ones, I doubt if anyone would stake their life on it. ref. Juvenile Casps in August - ten birds.

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

It would be interesting to know what percentage of lifers are self-found. Sadly nowadays hardly any, in the UK at least, one imagines.

    Vancouver. BC. - Gull - AHGU x WEGU ?

Thanks Lou. I knew that should be the most likely but talked myself out of it. Olympic is new for me this month, learning slowly!

Gull from Cley beach Norfolk UK today 9/7/22

Med. Gull. With respect: 2nd year (born last year) / 1st summer (July) becoming 2nd winter. A 1st year, i.e. juvenile in July would not have moult in the primaries, or a bi-coloured bill etc. and would look like this: https://www.flickr.com/photos/gullsandterns/albums/72157696181856511

    Sparrow ? - Victoria BC - today, July 4th.

Thanks very much everyone. I had only seen one Chipping before. That was an imm. in 2019. I considered Savannah but ruled it out, even without the yellow, based on head pattern. I have only seen two of the latter before, one in 2019 in USA/CA … and the absolute mega Ipswich that appeared near...
