how many can i fit in my mouth?

[ QUOTE - k-rina - As I understand, "mealworms" are those white and small worms, thin, about 1 cm lenght ? Thanks ] They can be white but mostly they are a pale brown or beige colour, they do come in several sizes, from small to medium to large, roughly 1/2/3 cm long. Bluetit

Hi Sue Bohanna and welcome to BF. You're doing a great job! The links Kezza has given you look promising and I'm sure you'll get somewhere constructive with those, please do let us know how you get on. Meanwhile - I couldn't agree more wholeheartedly with you about a lot of people's attitude...

Juv HG just fell onto the bedroom windowsill

[ Quote Evanji Axu - Reminds me. Mom says one time our beagle found a baby bird, but she just nosed it around. I don't think dogs are very aggressive against birds. ] On that note ours was a ( attempting ) bird eater when it came to wild birds, she never caught adults but each spring she would...

PLEASE HELP ME ! Swifts in my care

Hi k-rina, well, perhaps your different feeding just took a few days for her to get used to and for her body to react and now it's beginning to work and the first result is that she is not pulling so badly at her feathers. Excellent news. Not so good about your colleague and boss, they will get...

    Baby Sparrows

Hi dotolive, I googled Carolina Wrens which of course you may well have done by now, some good info ( one from Cornell Uni even gives you a sound recording although that's down temporarily but when up you may recognise? ) and though I'm no expert they do look like Carolina Wrens and they also...

PLEASE HELP ME ! Swifts in my care

Hi k-rina, been following your thread with baited breath ( as have lots of others judging by the number of views ) and I think you're doing a great job! I was just wondering whether this other vet you have just seen and who identified the birds as Swifts would not be able to diagnose what's...

bees and bumblebees on hummingbird feeders?

Gosh guys, thanks very much for all your replies, from humminbird ( the 'early' bird ) to Greg's ( breastfeeding a smurf, haha :))) ) with suggestions as to homemade b/bb feeders. My main objective really are the bbs, I will keep you posted as to what happens but that may in fact be next year as...

    Blue Tits and Summer Feeding

No vinnielo, not neccessarily apparently, perhaps it depends on the size of the chick/how deep the nest is in relation to the opening of the box? I had also 5 dead chicks last year, and could always tell by the flies that were gathering - would quickly whisk it out one at a time. The last 2 died...

    found baby blue jay 7/15/06

Hi singing2feathers and welcome to BF. As Mark already said - if you can get them to a local rehabber asap that would probably be best as it is incredibly time consuming and quite difficult to handrear birds successfully to fledging independence. If you cannot find one a local vet should have...

    Bye Bye birdfeeders...

old can be as good as new Hi Silvershark,, unless there's an ulterior motive to you offering your feeders to the neighbours ( ie. ensuring the birds will get fed?!? ) why not keep them, especially if money is tight? Just been through that scenario myself and feeding the birds can be prohibitive...

    Dove's egg

Hi mjhill, if the egg is still in a nest try and secure that as high up as you safely can in tree or under whatever it was found, chances are the parents may return, if just egg try locate the nest in area where that was found and return if possible. If neither plan is successful keep egg warm...

    Incredibly stupid, or incredibly brave?!

And as I scrutinise some more I find that it looks as if there's something hanging from the talons of the bird, a mouse or such like? The scenario was perhaps - cat play/chasing a mouse and bird swoops in between to nick mouse, cat (hopping mad and acting on reflex rather than knowledge - as...

    Incredibly stupid, or incredibly brave?!

If you look closely you'll see that the cat's claws are not actually hooked into the bird's tail, the feathers wouldn't support the weight of the cat anyway. Looks to me as if it's the angle the photo was taken at, I think the cat is actually a few feet away from the bird. Bluetit

Please help! Mourning Dove: Can I move the nest with no harm done?

Hello Lawchik, I must say I think the law anywhere is an ass if one cannot move a nest such little way for such good reason without being hung-drawn-and-quartered for it, I cannot see any harm in that either and generally parents are very adept at finding their own, even more so when there are...

    please help emergency

Hi damanarie and welcome to BF. Unless the bird dies first, sadly, your best bet is to take it to a vet if you can ( today being Sunday although there are vets out of hours of course ) or by tomorrow, they will decide if they can help/ or it is kinder to put the little bird to sleep. Sorry can't...

    Blue Tits and Summer Feeding

Hear what you're saying, Poecile, but the parents would have to be in a pretty desperate situation to have to feed the chicks that much sunflowerhearts to have the dehydratory result? If I may digress ever so slightly ( Keith, this is your thread, apologies for hijacking it of sorts...) BUT this...

Hi BethK, great to hear that 'your' chick is doing fine and responding to your TLC, he'll be up and away out of harms way so much quicker for that I would think. Bluetit

    blackbird in distress!

There's a number of reasons why the female may be calling all the time, danger will be one of them and cats will be one big cause of the danger. In the absence of you being more detailed about whether she's on the nest/away from it and /or has chicks/fledglings I cannot say anythingelse to that...
