Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

They are only collecting those records because the species is a potential breeder. Nowhere have I said one bird can breed.

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

We are making the same point Paul.

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

Why would a Rare Breeding Birds Panel accept records for species if they didn't think they might breed?

ID help please - Foulshaw Moss UK

I don't think you could safely put a name on it. If it was closer to the egret it might be possible to judge the size better. That said, this is Birdforum and you might get several different species suggested...

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

Pallid Harrier doesn't feel a bad shout, though you'd be fearful for them in some areas including where one male held territory a few years back. Swinhoe's Petrel? But let's face it we'd probably never know, it may already have happened. Lesser Scaup or Ring-necked Duck maybe.

Hi, I'm Fiona from Carlisle in the UK

Welcome Fiiona. There's one or two Cumbrians on here, I'm in Blackpool now but still get back regularly.

    Mediterranean Gull? Frampton Marsh

I was surprised by the idea that Med Gulls would be that scarce at Frampton, a bit of googling showed there were 71 there earlier in the month though that was apparently a county record.

    Mediterranean Gull? Frampton Marsh

Looks like a Med Gull to me but unless you live in the far reaches of Scotland and were visiting you'll get another soon enough.

    Wader (Fuerteventura)

I know the caveats but I've put it in Google Lens and it thinks it's a Sanderling.

    Wader (Fuerteventura)

Ok. Not seeing orange but I take the point. Perhaps it was taken on a mobile phone.

    Wader (Fuerteventura)

Fair enough. I can't see any orange in the legs but if others can I'll defer.

    Wader (Fuerteventura)

How does that explain it looking long-legged?

    Wader (Fuerteventura)

How can you ignore the leg colour and length, why would orange legs look black and longer than expected? I wondered about spring plumaged Sanderling, but could also be wrong.

Snakes on the sidewalk, Bonking Turtles and a few sps on Paphos Headland April 13-20th 2024

Yes, not least because he has said so in the narrative. Edit - I guess he may not be referring to this particular bird, but if he has seen both species not sure it matters particularly.

    Garganey on Orkney Islands, Scotland

Was this from the hide at The Loons. Apparently there was a pair there just prior.

    Female Kestrel, Paphos headland yesterday.

I was also on Paphos headland yesterday before going to the airport. Small world. Only saw Common Kestrel for what it's worth.

    Common Eider Morecambe Bay

There have been several counts over the winter of upwards of 5000 Eider off Foulney / Walney so still large numbers in the area. They seem to be breeding more at Chapel Island than Walney Island these days, but as far as I know still use Foulney in some numbers. I didn't think divebombing...

How many of the potential raptor species for the U.K have people seen?

This is true, but there are records in the UK from when falconers' escapes were arguably less of an issue and when the species was in less trouble in Eastern Europe. They were also on remote islands.

    Yellow-breasted bunting?

Yes very good Butty, contrary as ever. Any decent field guide has flight images, try getting a rarity accepted without images or recordings by saying its flight action matched the description in IOEPASL.

    Yellow-breasted bunting?

This may not be a popular view but I think this is the fundamental problem with the field guide to passerines in flight that came out a few years back. You hear a bird that sounds strange or see features that look odd but it's ultimately a few seconds of observation, otherwise you don't need a...

    Iberian Chiffchaff dilemma

It's still very early for most species to have young. Has it picked up song, a call or do you not know. As well as 'tentative singers' there are birds which combine Chiff Chaff and Willow Warbler song that can sound a bit like Iberian Chiffs, I think I've heard these are generally Willow...

Redpoll - common vs lesser - UK

I would say they are all Lessers but I'm not sure what you mean about sound leading you one way, I thought they all sounded the same.
