    WAITING FOR TRINOVID 7x42 BN

Congrats, Thotmosis! That's some great looking glass. Very happy to see the love these have been getting recently, I'm loving mine. I think you made the right call opting for the necessary repairs.

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

I asked if they still had the original rain guard. They responded saying that they had it and asked me to confirm my adress, so I believe they will send me one free of charge. Nice.

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Thanks Thotmosis! They did do a fine job. I especally like to know that the prisms have been looked over. Although I love quality optics, I am not one that changes binoculars often. Before buying the Leicas, I exclusively used a pair of Swarovski SLC 8x30 WB (Mark II, upgraded to Mark III...

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Thank you! I wholeheartedly agree. Just cleaning. There's a very small scratch on one eyepiece. Besides that, the glass is in remarkably good shape - especially considering how rough the exterior looked when I got them.

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Aaaand they are back! Focus is smooth from end to end; feels exactly as when I tried new Trinovids in the stores in the late 1990s. Beautiful new armouring. New eyecups snap into place nicely. The missing central cap on the focus wheel has been replaced. As before, I got the best image with the...

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

The Trinovid is now on its way back to me, expected to be here on Tuesday. Very much looking forward to seeing what they've done to it!

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Leica just replied, saying it is now with a technician and they expect it to be finished this week. Very happy about that!

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Still no further updates from Leica. I've emailed them and asked if they know approximately how long it'll take. I kind of thought it would take a month or so, but maybe that was too optimistic.

    Swarovski Spotting Scope

Yup, at least here in Sweden I see lots and lots of 1990's AT80 HDs still in frequent use. Definately not a rare scope. I have a 1997 AT80HD as my main scope, with a recent 25-50x eyepiece, and I really don't see an urgent need to change it for anything. I guess it's a scope that you don't need...

Oh yeah, that seems to have been a more distinct step forward. Totally out of my price range, though! Maybe in 32 years...

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

I've been reading quite a lot of threads on this, and the overall impression seems to be that the top offerings from Leica has optically been remarkably similar over the last 30 years since the launch of the Trinovid BA series in 1990. Allbino's review of the Ultravid HD+ is sums it up quite...

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Indeed - it feels fantastic to be able to repair an instrument as old as this. I have a bit of a special relationship with the Trinovid BA/BN series, actually. In 2005, I went of a 2-month expedition to Chukotka with the late Evgeny Syroechkovskiy, Pavel Tomkovich, Christoph Zoeckler and...

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Leica confirmed receiving the bins this morning, and a couple of hours later they sent me the repair estimate, attached below. I'm a little surprised they don't mention the broken eyecups. In other quotes I've seen, they have specified this as spare parts + added labor for engraving the serial...

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Congrats to your friend. Before I found out the serial number, I was dreaming of such a scenario, as the person I bought them from thought they were much newer than they actually were. The BN 's were produced between 2001 and 2007, so your friend's pair must have been significantly younger than...

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

Glad to hear you think they'll be able to adjust the close focus a bit. Any improvement in that regard would be worth a lot to me, as I feel that it is one of the few things lacking in this model. I don't care much about how my binoculars look, but I doubt that Leica's repair technicians will...

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

I also asked them to adjust the focus travel for better close focusing, as on the BN, if possible. Will be interesting to see what they say.

Service of out-of-warranty Leica Trinovid 10x42 BA (1009xxx)

I recently picked up a pair of Trinovid 10x42 BA. Very heavily used. Both eyecups were broken and taped in place, and the focus wheel was a bit stiff at near and far focus. But the optics were exquisite, and I've always loved this model. As I had read on here about Leica's recent shift towards...

How do you organize your sound collection?

I haven't seen a discussion about ways to organize your sound collection here, so I'll start one. I do not yet have a large sound collection. But the one I have is not well organized. It is simply a single folder with the original files with the names generated by my Olympus LS-12. For example...

Attaching LS-P4 to Shotgun Mic (ME 66)

Thanks for alerting me to the bass roll-off filter setting. I've never carefully checked what frequencies it affects. I've kept it ON, assuming that it wouldn't affect the birds I'm recording. However, a couple of nights ago I was standing by my bedroom window hoping to hear a Great bittern...

L-bracket to attach recorder to ME66 pistol grip

Another thing: I'm a birder first and foremost. So 95% of the time I only use my binoculars and spotting scope. I photograph and record sounds mainly to learn and document. I don't do video, so I'm not interested in using the camera and recorder at the same time. So basically I just want the...

L-bracket to attach recorder to ME66 pistol grip

No, not quite a full grip. It's actually rather comfortable anyway (I have small hands and the grip has a rather large diameter). But it would be better if it stood out just a little bit more. I might look for a slightly larger bracket next time I'm at the hardware store. No, I haven't looked...

Thanks, NorthernHarrier, glad you liked it! Your recent threads very much inspired me to finally get on with this project.

L-bracket to attach recorder to ME66 pistol grip

I thought this contraption might interest someone. I've had a Sennheiser ME66 for a couple of years (just checked, five years and a week) and used it with a Olympus LS-12. I've been very happy with the results, sound quality-wise. Ergonomically, I haven't been entirely pleased. I got a pistol...

    Viking/Kamakura OEM Eyepiece compatibility

Ecotone (Poland) replied and said that the Ecotone-branded eyepieces would work with the Kamakura SP. Here's a link to the 22x (€118): https://en.ecotone.com.pl/produkty/okular-ler-22x.html This makes me even more certain that the Viking-branded ones would work too. I'll keep updating this...

    Viking/Kamakura OEM Eyepiece compatibility

Thanks Binastro. I think the problem with these exact scopes is that they are so region specific, so differently-branded parts rarely "meet each other", so to speak. I e-mailed Viking optics UK and they were very willing to help - they thought it would fit, but were not sure. I might advise my...
