Which apps do you use when birding?

I have 4 apps on my iPod: iBird Pro, Audubon Guide to Birds, and HeadsUp Sparrows and Warblers. I get the most use out of iBird Pro because I also have a version of it on my smart phone, but I find that the HeadsUp apps have more song and call variations per bird but only one picture of each bird.

    Gull?

:flyaway: Looks like a California Gull to me gauging by the black wing-tip pattern. It's hard to tell any other features. :flyaway:

    More Newbie questions

:flyaway: Hi Tim, I live in Charlotte. I've been working on a garden here for the past few years, trying to make it into a good bird habitat, so I have a good supply of songbirds here. But I'm more of a photographer than a real expert on birds. I've found learning more about birds helps the...

How many bird songs does the Mockngbird imitate?

That is so fascinating! I never heard a mockingbird imitate a Red-tailed Hawk but it was either a Common Grackle or a European Starling that imitated its cry, you know, the one that is always used in movies or commercials to substitute for an eagle scream. This is very interesting! Please...

    More Newbie questions

Hello MeanGene, I'm Tim and I, too, live in North Carolina, Cameron. It's up north of Fayetteville. I don't know much about the different camera accessaries that you mentioned as I only use a Canon PowerShot which has a lens that pops in and out. My tripod has a Tilt/Pan head which I like...

How many bird songs does the Mockngbird imitate?

I've been counting the different songs that I recognize the local Northern Mockingbird sing and so far have counted 10! Here they are: Northern Cardinal, Tufted Titmouse, Prairie Warbler, Carolina Wren, Eastern Towhee, Eastern Bluebird, Blue Jay, Northern Flicker, Brown-headed Nuthatch, and...

    Arizona USA Cowbird

The juvenile Bronzed Cowbird does have dark eyes but are a darker red than the adults according to my Sibley's guide. The juvie Brown-headed Cowbird has a dark brown eye as in your photo. Also, your pic matches the one for the Brown-headed juvie in my Kaufman guide. I hope this helps!

    UK which warbler?

Judging by the yellow tinge on the front edge of the wing and the range for the bird, it looks to be a Chiffchaff. I saw several others that looked close but the range was off, they didn't appear in Great Britain. I hope I helped. Cheers!:flyaway:

British names for North American birds

I think we call all birds by the same name, for example, you guys have the European Robin and we have the American Robin, but they look very different from each other. Would you call any of the American birds something different in Ireland? Also, in the Middle East and Europe I believe eagles...

    Cassin's Sparrow

A friend and I went to a field near Camp MacKall, NC this past Tuesday to find a Cassin's Sparrow and were in luck to see and hear him! He has been there for several days now and I was very fortunate to add him as my 355th lifer, the first this year, so far! Normally he would be found in the...

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

24 April 2010, Bobolink (348) in Lillington, NC, I was on a Spring bird count with a friend and we saw a field full of them. I bet I've passed fields like that in the past many times and have never taken the time to stop to see what I could see. I was surprised by the number of new birds I've...

    Scaup? - Tacumshin Lake

The white patches behind the bill are missing and the color of the head and two-toned bill seem right for a Redhead.

    Northern Wheatear?

It looks to me like an Isabelline Wheatear which has a brighter supercilium and is lighter overall in color than the northern wheatear.

    We love gulls (ID Poland)

I'm now conflicted, the bill looks right for Ring-billed but the wing pattern looks right for Mew. It's a toss up for me! Cheers! :h?:

    We love gulls (ID Poland)

I submit that these are Ring-billed Gulls, very much like the ones we have here in North Carolina. Cheers! B (:

    Your Most Recent "Life" Bird

My two most recent life birds were seen in Utah at Antelope Island on the 10th of this month. They were the Sabine's Gull and the Red-necked Phalarope. It was my only birding day for the whole trip so I was quite happy! Although I've not seen that many species of birds in Utah, it still...

    Hello

Top 'o the mornin' to ya! I've always wanted to know how the birding is over there! I've never been to the country where my name originated but my sister was there a couple of years ago and she loved it! She said she saw our name everywhere in the county of Mayo I believe. I think that's...

Yellow Warblers now in yard, what to feed?

I had a Yellow Warbler in my yard a few years back, I don't know what attracted him there. I had regular bird seed in my feeders, you know, black sunflower seeds, peanuts and those little white, round ones I don't remember the name of. I think it ate the sunflower seeds. It may not be picky...

    Unusual and unexpected

I work as a Security Guard on Fort Bragg, NC and have opportunities to bird at work. The other day I saw a Northern Harrier but it is supposedly a winter bird, what a treat! Also, for several days I've been seeing a Northern Mockingbird with a very stubby tail, sort of like an American Dipper...
