Best birding trips in Central/South America?

    This is great! Thank you!

Best birding trips in Central/South America?

Thanks. We started a deep dive into Colombia lodges last night. Still looking at Costa Rica as well. Colombia may demand more than a week long trip, especially at 16 hours of travel each way...

Best birding trips in Central/South America?

Ahh. We were just looking at Canopy Lodge in Panama. Are there any Lodges in Colombia you recommend?

Best birding trips in Central/South America?

Thanks @temmie, @raymie and @DMW! We don't need the beaches and birding locations to be in the same location. Just saying we're not planning 7 days of birding. We're happy to drive and see the country.

    Hi I'm back!

Thanks, Delia (and Kits). I'll take it offline with you. I guess it make sense to merge them into the new one, since I jut posted a new question. I tried most (but apparently not all) of my usual email addresses with no luck.

Best birding trips in Central/South America?

My fiancée and I are planning a 1-week birding trip to somewhere in Central or South America for early August this year and I'm looking for advice or opinions on what would give us the best bang for our time/buck. We are thinking about Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador...

    Hi I'm back!

Apparently I posted in here quite a bit in the Aughts, mostly about my Canon 100-400mm lens and other photography and birding topics. I sold that lens yesterday and bought a Panasonic Lumix 100-300mm Vario G II f/4-5.6. But I'm not going to talk about that! (Ok, I might eventually...) We're...

    is or no is

I compared my 100-400 IS to a pro friend's 70-200 f/2.8 without IS, and I'm soooo glad I got the IS. In an evening of low-light handheld and tripod shooting I did not get a single usable handheld shot from the 70-200 at f/2.8, but I got plenty of decent shots at 400 at f/5.6 with IS on. If I can...

    Advise please

Don't get the 50/1.8, if what you want is a decent everyday lens. That would be a decent everyday lens for 1985. Today's nifty fifty, IMHO, is the 18-55mm. It's as sturdy as the 50/1.8 (as in, not very sturdy), it has IS, which will more than make up for the low light sensitivity of the f/1.8...

    Suitable camera bag

Looking at all these options online just now, the Tamrac Expedition 8 looks like the best deal. It's the biggest camera pack from Tamrac and at about $250US a lot cheaper than the big LowePro Trekker packs, which are $300-500. It also looks like it will hold all my digital Canon gear plus my...

    Workflow

Thanks, Frank. I'm trying this workflow after my next shoot. I've been using Lightroom since switching to RAW files and moving back to a Mac after being on a PC for a few years. Those occurrences were simultaneous and Lightroom picked up where iPhoto, Picasa, PS Elements, etc., left off. (And...

DSLR + lense for wildlife photography beginner

Yeah, don't count on the IS to do the magic. Hold as still as you can and use the highest shutter speed you can (at the highest ISO you think looks good). BUT, without IS you'd get far, far fewer decent shots. Absolutely keep it turned on, but don't think it will make up for lousy technique.

DSLR + lense for wildlife photography beginner

If you haven't shot with an SLR or big lens before, you are likely to be very disappointed with your results and think you wasted your good money. I'd suggest getting a zoom in the wide to telephoto range as well, just so you can see good enough results to keep you interested in your...

    Advise please

Why not hold out for the release of the new Canon lenses? I think I'm changing my next planned lens purchase from the 18-200 to the new 15-85mm. It's $800US for an f/5.6 lens, but it's got aspherical elements and covers the 24-135 range. That's everything I think I'd need until I have to pull...

Choice of Canon lens for beginner in Bird Photography

Owning the 100-400, I can't imagine giving up the focal length range for a prime lens of the same length and speed, despite the faster AF and better IQ. The alternative would have to be faster or longer to make the extra AF speed and sharpness worth the loss of focal length range.

Choice of Canon lens for beginner in Bird Photography

I vote for the 100-400. While a good deal of the time I use it at 400mm, there are quite few times that I back out to 100 (for kids and distant landscapes) or somewhere in between. Main reason I highly recommend it is to cut down on swapping lenses. Besides the dust getting on your sensor when...

Handholding 300mm and 400mm lenses, do you remove the tripod ring?

I'm going to put it back on and try tucking it into my belt when I walk! Usually when I have it on it's rotated to the top and I can grab the whole unit with a couple of fingers.

    Best photography magazines

I probably shouldn't put this in the Canon forum, but this is where I usually come, and from the stats it looks like most people... What are the best, or your favorite, photography magazines. I was in a Barnes & Nobles bookstore in San Francisco and was surprised to see there were about double...

    Budget Zooms

Based on what I've read on the topic in these here forums, the Canon EF-S 55-250 mm IS is the sharpest, at the long end, of what you've listed. Though it's a likely unnoticeable 50mm shorter than the others, not going for the 300 may be why it's a better lens at this price point.

A little question on crop factor

To me, what you are asking here negates your entire argument. The image captured with my 1.6x 40D will give me a larger bird when the full-framed image is blown up to 8x12", than a full-frame 5dii, printed full-frame at 8x12" would with the same lens. And my bet is, you would be hard pressed...

Highlight Tone Priority and RAW files

Tim, That was an awesome answer, and definitely gives me a lot of food for thought. A lot has changed in how I determine my exposure since I started shooting RAW about a month ago. First off, while shooting jpegs, I tended to overexpose by 2/3-stop since the camera's evaluative metering mode...

    Canon Macro Lens

What's the s/h stand for?? I don't think it's shipping and handling, but that's all I can come up with! Oh, and while I'm at it, what does o.n.o. mean? Those of us in the Colonies say OBO, or best offer...

Highlight Tone Priority and RAW files

Has anyone done any testing to confirm whether or not highlight tone priority (on a 40D) actually does anything when shooting RAW files? Given that RAW files are supposed to capture everything that registers on the sensor I'm inclined to think it doesn't make any difference except to the...

    Software for raw.

I've been using Adobe Lightroom 2.1 for a couple of months now and like it a whole lot more than Apple Aperture. I haven't tried the Canon DPP though. I figure I'd demo the big guns' software first. Not sure how the others work but I like that Lightroom does not make any changes to your RAW...

    Canon Macro Lens

One of the first commenters on that link said they primarily used their Sigma 105, but really liked using their Nifty Fifty with extension tubes. That's the route I hope to take as my next lens purchase. That said, has anyone here used that setup? What are the advantages and disadvantages? The...
