Canon 15x50 Refurb , is an armor opening supposed to be by the tripod location or is it a crack (defect)?

Not the finest craftsman on display, that is for certain. I almost boxed them back up straight away. For this pair it's all about the utility and technology, if they work to their original design I'm fine with it. On the other hand if it were a crack or compromised the weather proof function...

Canon 15x50 Refurb , is an armor opening supposed to be by the tripod location or is it a crack (defect)?

Thanks for sharing that. Well, so far for a sample set n=3 they all have it. Kind of an irregular shape for a seam but so be it. At least it's not a refurb issue!

Canon 15x50 Refurb , is an armor opening supposed to be by the tripod location or is it a crack (defect)?

Hi y'all, I just got these and so far tried them without IS. Nice image. The armor housing seems to have a crack, is this a defect or part of the design? Hard to imagine they can be weather proof with this opening. What do you think? In my initial opinion, it is a crack caused by defective...

The OG Leather Wrapped Bausch & Lomb Elite

I have now spent some time comparing this binocular to it's little brother in 7x36. Both have a lovely image and incredible sharpness but I do give the edge to the 7x36. Here is why: Between the years the coatings are improved on the 7x36, with just a little more color pop and bump up in...

    New binos by mid June.

I think of you want the Monarch HG in 8x42 your best price for new with USA warranty will be about $830. $830 was a Greentoe counter offer from $740 offer a few weeks ago. Closer to $700 from Japan without US warranty or $700 refurbished with 90 days warranty.

    New binos by mid June.

Greentoe has the 10x42 Conquest HD for $639 again. I ordered one last month and was impressed with the views. New with lifetime warranty...

    New Binocular Bargains Thread

Canon is having a Memorial Day day with around 45% off the regular refurbished prices for about half a dozen IS models. Just picked up the 15x50 IS Weatherproof for example at $549 with free shipping. https://www.usa.canon.com/shop/p/refurbished-15x50-is-all-weather-binoculars?

The OG Leather Wrapped Bausch & Lomb Elite

I am looking forward to seeing just what the phase coating brings to the table for these B&L Elites. Having recently picked up a phase coated 7x36, my first impression is better color and higher contrast. However, I did not yet compared them side by side. Very curious to see if there is an...

1998 SLC 8x30 WB Habicht Pick Up in 2024

I think I found the source of the stick slip. Seems either end of the hinge is binding, with corresponding wear marks. Long term deformation of plastics or so called creep behavior as the culprit. I might try a little beeswax to see if it helps but if the hinge ends/housing are too...

1998 SLC 8x30 WB Habicht Pick Up in 2024

Thanks for sharing that, sounds like a lot of enjoyment was had with them! Great pics too. It's a handy little instrument, albeit with dated tech. Incredibly sharp, smooth focus. I happen to have a soft spot for 80-90's top quality items, which are accessible to me today (peak...

1998 SLC 8x30 WB Habicht Pick Up in 2024

Just picked up this little number second hand, it's pretty darn nice for being almost 3 decades old. Will clean it up some more but the glass is in great shape and it came with all the accessories in a good condition. Lovely views, very enveloping and sharp focus, nice depth & breadth of...

1990's Alpha glass 30+ years on: the Bausch & Lomb Elite 7x36

That sounds nice, although I am unfamiliar with them. Will have to check them out although, having acquired a few pieces recently I am going to take a break and enjoy the views first 😁.

1990's Alpha glass 30+ years on: the Bausch & Lomb Elite 7x36

Glad to hear that! The sharpness and clarity is remarkable. In certain light I do notice a bit of glare in the 8x, but not much. Not sure if the coatings again or just the design. Really looking forward to spend some time with them. First I need to source a neck strap, or modify one to fit...

1990's Alpha glass 30+ years on: the Bausch & Lomb Elite 7x36

This are clearly not new old stock, but I'll be darned if they are as close to being a time capsule in 2024. Impeccable condition. I was excited to receive them so wanted to share a few quick pics. A quick peek through the lenses already gave a nice "Wow" impression. This is my second pair...

How sharp should the view be for a Nikon Monarch M5 in 8x42?

Service was completed on 5/15 and I received them today. It is the same pair but ran many checks and adjusted the diopter. Wow, it is a night and day difference. I think they did a great job because the views are outstanding. My M5 is tack sharp now. The focuser feels significantly better...

    Eyecups for older Elite models.

@Owlbarred were you able to source any eyecups? Also, can you please share some photos of your 1980s 7x35? I have a 1980 or early 1990s 8x42 Elite with the leather wrap. Very enjoyable views! Would love to have some spare eyecups as well to keep them going longer term.

How sharp should the view be for a Nikon Monarch M5 in 8x42?

The binoculars have been accepted for repair under the warranty. They communicated about them on the same day they arrived at the repair center. Very prompt service so far, and the status may be checked online.

The OG Leather Wrapped Bausch & Lomb Elite

Here is the original case, strap, and rainguard. The case is a single zippered bag constructed of foam padded leather. The leather is very nice and supple, but the foam has more or less disintegrated over the years.

    Slc 8x30

Great information in this thread, thank you. I have a Mark III pair ca. 1998 with twist up eyecups on the way. Too bad they missed the upgraded prism mirrors, yet I remain hopeful that they will provide a pleasant enough (and sharp) view.

How sharp should the view be for a Nikon Monarch M5 in 8x42?

Well, all boxed up and ready to go, planning to check back and update how the service goes. I will say this in answer to my own original question: the M5 view can be very sharp indeed, so I will be happy to keep them if the wandering diopter is fixed.
