Is Slimbridge wetlands the Mecca of bird spotting in the Uk?😄

Holy Jesus. I don’t think I can get there for that early. I’ll be saying some little prayers to the birding gods tonight that it’s still there tomorrow afternoon! 🥰😊

Is Slimbridge wetlands the Mecca of bird spotting in the Uk?😄

Where about did you see it from Taff? Looks a huge place on the map on its website. The Mrs is a couple of weeks from giving birth so she won’t be able to walk the whole reserve tomorrow!

Is Slimbridge wetlands the Mecca of bird spotting in the Uk?😄

I’ve decided to make the trip to Slimbridge this Wednesday! Really looking forward to it and feel that now I have the Merlin app and a decent scope set up I’m going to get lots more from it than I would if I’d gone when I started this thread! Really hoping to see some waders as well as owls...

Help with a particular duck in grange over sands (Cumbria) today.

Oh ok. I tried putting the picture on Merlin and it gave me that option but it seems to think they’re only present in North America so I sort of discounted that.

Help with a particular duck in grange over sands (Cumbria) today.

I’m having a few days up in the lakes and when I was out with the Mrs earlier we wandered through an ornamental park which has various species of (to me anyway) unusual and exotic ducks. Bar headed goose, Muscovy and this little fella or lady perched on a branch in the pond. Apologies for the...

    RSPB Middleton Lakes

Is Middleton lakes still a reliable spot for Barn owls? I’ve seen a YouTube video that says they can often be found here. But the video is 2 years old.

I managed to find time for another trip to Carsington today. Was very pleasant and worthwhile! Saw my first ever Red Crested Pochard in front of the sailing club. It was then spooked by a moorhen and flew away. Very striking looking thing in person.

    Goyt valley

The goyt valley can be accessed via the cat and fiddle road which runs between Macclesfield and Buxton. There’s a pub called the cat and fiddle at the summit of the road which would be a fantastic spot for potential raptors I would imagine.

Thanks Andy. I do have the British and Irish bird pack already set up on my Merlin. I have now switched it to identify the noted birds with its given name used in the United Kingdom whereas before it was set to United States ID I guess that should of been self explanatory when I think about...

Thanks Andy. I do have the British and Irish bird pack already set up on my Merlin. I have now switched it to identify the noted birds with its given name used in the United Kingdom whereas before it was set to United States ID. Edit: Ok interesting. Now that I’ve changed the description...

Haha yes I do check that blog most days! They haven’t posted for a couple of days though. Maybe there is a black bellied plover there then?? I’m going to continue living out my fantasy anyway😁

I keep looking at this! You should consider entering that into countryfiles calendar competition! Absolutely stunning! X

Ok thanks. Is there anything at Carsington that has similar calls to a black bellied plover? I won’t have chance to go down for a couple of weeks now or else I’d go to the same spot and try and find what it is that’s being identified as the plover. Is it totally out of the question one could...

I’ve been at carsington again today. And again my Merlin picked up a black bellied plover. In the same sort of spot as last time. I front of stones island, near to where the Great northern diver was for a few weeks. Is this too much of a coincidence? Again it only picked it up once but it does...

    First Spotting Scope, £1000

Just to say, I went to Attenborough today and came home with a Viking 65mm 14-68 scope, manfrotto tripod, smartphone adapter and carry bag for £700 in total. It’s an absolute game changer for me! Carsington on Tuesday is going to be amazing! Can’t wait!

Thanks for helping me out! I didn’t actually have eyes on anything that I thought could be a black bellied Plover. Whilst I was drooling over 2 warblers I had my Merlin app open and when I looked down it had supposedly detected the plover! Ahhh man that’s a shame about the diver! Why would it...

    Derbyshire County Birding

Does anyone think it’s possible that it’s plausible for a black bellied plover to be at Carsington water at this time of year? My Merlin app supposedly picked one up there today. But given how rare it is, and the fact it only picked it up the once, is it unlikely? It also seems to be named...

    Finches Friend feeders

Bought one of them last week and hung it from the feeding station I bought a few weeks ago. Came downstairs this morning to head out to work and the whole thing was on its side. The current Mrs she’ll not av feathers on is nearly 8 months pregnant and got up in the middle of the night as she’s...

    Celestron Spotting Scope advice please?

I’ve seen a Celestron LandScout 20-60x80mm with small tripod available for £180 on eBay. I’m half tempted to give it a try and just wondered if anyone else has used one previously? It’s obviously at the basic end of scopes and doesn’t come with ED glass or nitrogen filled. How much does this...

    Finches Friend feeders

£60 is on the steep side for any bird feeder! But given a number of birds can feed off it at once I might give it a try. Can Niger seed be used with it? Basically I’m desperate to try and entice the goldfinches in the area into my garden and if this works it will be worth every penny!

Good Birds spotted on a walk

I climbed Mam Tor in the Peak District early yesterday morning and on the route round saw my first skylark. Also saw what I think was a grey wagtail but wasn’t quick enough with my phone to get a picture or Merlin ID.

    Derbyshire County Birding

I had a stupendously good early evening at Carsington today! First time I’ve ever been at that time of day! I was able to get binoculars on a sedge warbler for the first ever time! But my Merlin app picked up a huge variety of birds! I was nearly overcome with excitement! If it wasn’t for the...
