    Butterflies of Armenia, June-July 2022

Lovely stuff Jos! I've only seen a relatively few late summer species there while guiding birding tours, but there's a wealth of species I'd love to go in spring to see. It looks like the temperatures weren't too bad either, which puts me off a little bit going at that time.

Car break-ins and thefts Málaga - Strait of Gibraltar area

Please see above. It's really hard to keep a vehicle truly empty while birding so there's always the risk. I was recently warned by two Civil Guard I bumped into in a bar in Monfragüe at the end of the year never to leave gear in the cars in car parks there either. Cheers, John

Car break-ins and thefts Málaga - Strait of Gibraltar area

Thanks! It still hurts as it was quite a financial hit, but I did get a little back from the extended vehicle insurance I had taken out. The group actually got quite a lot of their gear (obviously no money, cameras, optics or laptops) back almost 2 weeks later when a sub-contracted geologist...

Extremadura: Vegas Atlas: Still worth visiting?

Did you go? The whole area is undergoing massive change, with ever more intensive agriculture including a shift from rice fields to soft fruit crops leading the way. In October you would have found the rice fields still wet, but some areas other than Vegas Altas are perhaps better for rice...

    Fuerteventura in December

Barn Owl I wish you the very best of luck with the gracilirostris Barn Owl. I've seen it just once, on Lanzarote, and by pure accident (though heard it there another time as well). It's a tough bird to find.

Car break-ins and thefts Málaga - Strait of Gibraltar area

If you are birding or taking photos in the Málaga - Strait of Gibraltar area, LOOK OUT! Parked in a service station an hour west of Málaga yesterday along the toll road and with the group never more than 40m from the vehicle, we were broken into and all hand luggage stolen. Goodbye scope...

Mexico City + Monarch Sanctuary RFI

OK. Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciate it. :t: As it's a much longer trip in total, I don't really want the hassle of dragging all the luggage around on public transport, but will consider options more. There must be some great birding possible en route from Mexico City too, if you hve...

Mexico City + Monarch Sanctuary RFI

hi all I need urgent help to resolve a problem. I had a guide lined-up who appeared to be bona-fide and had given me assurances that they would take me birding around a site in Mexico City one morning, and then on to the Monarch Sanctuary in the Angangueo-Zitácuaro-Tlalpujahua area for 3...

Barolo (Little) Shearwaters, N Tenerife, July 2014

A quick update. I returned to try again on 7th, this time with better seas and shortly after arriving, at 1745h, two Barolo's cruised west, slightly closer than the Cory's, with one disappearing shortly after, but the second bird remaining, being seen on and off for at least another hour, with...

Barolo (Little) Shearwaters, N Tenerife, July 2014

Hi All Having found this thread yesterday morning, I decided to try it out in the evening! Looking at the map and balancing distance from accommo (in Tegueste) with wanting to be watching in the NW (an hour-long seawatch from the Punta del Hidalgo lighthouse early morning only produced c.200...

How to find Dupont's Lark, bustards and sandgrouse in the Steppes of Spain

Good stuff Stephen. Just a couple of quick points to add. As noted, being in or close to the car on the usual tracks and NOT walking into the habitat is a good option, and more so during the breeding season. Some sites, such as near Segovia, in fact are in reserves where 1. you are not allowed...

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

Interesting! I missed out this SX50/60 step and so have had to decide on what's around now. I too was impressed by a P610, seeing it just days after the "1 month no questions asked" return policy of Amazon, with a FAR better resolution than the FZ72. But the same clients that showed me that have...

    Little Bustard display sites

Hi Ed Believe it or not, little bustards are fast disappearing as a breeding species in Extremadura. We estimate that they might disappear altogether as a breeder within 10 years (and quite likely less) the way they are going. Small numbers can still be found widely at some of the traditional...

83x anyone? The new Nikon P900

Hi all. Great thread, albeit a bit long for a quick read, ha ha. I have just purchased this camera after quite a bit of deliberation and will be christening it in Trinidad & Tobago shortly... I have gone through a series of Panasonics until my last, the FZ72, which really didn't cut it for me...

Butterflies of Europe and the Mediterranean area

Hi Andy It's a remarkable book, though perhaps being harsh naturally suffers from some issues regarding covering such a huge area, principally in the accuracy of the maps, and the possibility to see the differently coloured regions for each subspecies, which is sometimes difficult under...

Butterflies of Europe and the Mediterranean area

Has anyone else out there now got the book and is willing to comment on it? It's a big outlay, especially given post+packing and bank transfer fees on top if ordering from the author, though still significantly cheaper than from 'normal' established booksellers. But a rigorous approach...

    Extremadura-Red-necked Nightjar

Hi Mark R-n Nightjars are relatively widespread right across N Extremadura, especially where there's a bit of rougher dehesa around. If the site mentioned above doesn't work just try driving the roads N of Trujillo at night, e.g. the Monroy Road as far as the road S twoards Santa Marta de...

    Extremadura - rice fields

Hi Matt Thanks for the kind comments. The region requires an encyclopaedic guide given the amazing number of sites. The new version will definitely have a greater number of sites to visit, but there have been so many changes to sites, roads, statuses etc. that it's become one of those...

Access to Punta de la Rasca, Tenerife

Hi all I haven't tried getting down to the lighthouse at the Punta de la Rasca for years, but am considering it on an imminent trip. I understand that it's now even more difficult than before, when it used to be best by walking from the banana plantation, accessed along a track W of Las...

    Extremadura May 2014

Hi Fallet How did the trip go? I hadn't seen your post until now, but there are three easy answers to the specific bird questions. LS-t Lark doesn't occur in EX. I can't remember off-hand if there are any confirmed records ever, but I believe not. Rufous B-c actually occurs very locally in...

    Extremadura - rice fields

Hi Matt Glad you saw something but sorry you coincided with the worst time. The number of rice fields has multiplied enormously since I published the guide and it's getting harder, without local guides, to pinpoint the best fields at a given time. Glad to hear that you found some Collared...

    Roller on the Canary Isles

Just quickly, Eduardo's book includes European Roller in the appendix section, under the P3 (scarce migrant) category and lists the 13 records dating from the period covered in the book. There's just 1 record from Fuerteventura, but 6 alone from Lanzarote between 19/5/2007 and 18/8/2011. A...

    Car Hire Query, Tenerife

I guess it might also work out cheaper, as long as transfers to/from the air- + port are not expensive. Have fun. La Gomera's a great island the skinks are fun to find :-)

    Spanish lynx

Graham and Mark FYI, in Andújar, like in the rest of the Iberian Peninsula we 'now' have Western (Common) Toad Bufo spinosus. Also there are no green toads here, but you probably saw a well-marked natterjack. Regarding Ibe Lynx, the end of Feb and beginning of March was very poor for...

    Donana in April

Hi Simon No problem at all. I've seen migrants a couple of times, presumably by sheer chance, in the El Acebuche scrub and along the El Rocío riverfront (in fact once in the incredible wild olives in the plaza of the same name, which shouldn't be missed either). Jonny, in case it's of interest...
