    Capercaillie in Finland

Hi, we are very keen to see Capercaillie on our visit to Finland. We will be travelling from Narvik, to Luleä, Rovaniemi and then Kuusamo in March, early April, sadly before the lekking season. Does anyone have contact details of someone that may be able to give us info that will help us locate...

Thanks. Great to know the road to Varanger is fine in March. Hopefully I can find some info on the Tromso section. Thanks for the food heads up. We have already booked our Tromso section so have to start there. Fitting in a visa application between Tromso and our 3 month Indonesia- Thailand...

We are spending time in Tromso end of Feb 25, but really want to go up to Varanger and then head to Lieksa to try for Wolverines. Very keen to get Stellers eider and also may get lucky with Snowy Owl at Varanger . Any one know best winter route to get there? The bus goes to Rovaniemi, is this...

We are heading to Norway and Sweden, maybe Finland too for 4 weeks in March 2025. We are planning on doing a round trip starting at Tromso, heading to Rovaniemi and then up to Varanga and back to Tromso. Any one have recommendations of other good birding spots to go to at that time of year in...

    3 days birding around Nairobi

We got some interesting birds around Hells Gate NP (you can find a bird guide at the entrance to the gorge) and Lake Naivasha, different to South African species. Don’t drive the road on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, it is busy! We weren’t so impressed with Nairobi National Park but it has a big...

    "Lost" birds. Again

This one has been seen, but you need to be pretty dedicated to get there 😂. I investigated and I think I would put it on “not practical” 😂

    "Lost" birds. Again

Hopefully my eBird checklists for our Somaliland trip will go through in the next few weeks. I just need to fix the locations on the import to eBird. That should take a few off the list. Somaliland was wonderful. I loved the desert landscapes.

    Birds seen in Botswana

I considered the small cisticolas, desert and zitting but yours looks too plain and not quite the right shape. The two tone beak seems to remove most of the species. So for me it’s neddicky.

Skukuza Camp South Africa Oct 22

To me the swallow is just not right for a greater striped. The rump is not the shade I associate with greater striped and the head …with the light cheeks also more like mosque to me.

    Ethiopia and binoculars

Transit no problem if you don’t leave the airport. If you have to leave the airport to go to a hotel for the night, even though you are still “in transit” you will pick up problems.

    Ethiopia and binoculars

I’m glad it went smoothly. Have a wonderful trip. We have just arrived back in South Africa, a relief to be in a semi civilised spot after 3 months in the Horn of Africa

    Ethiopia and binoculars

When you want to exit the airport there is one line to scan your luggage on exit for “transfer people” just overnighting in Addis (the right exit). This is the short line. And another longer line for everyone else, all luggage is also scanned there (the left exit) Both times we went to the...

    Ethiopia and binoculars

You shouldn’t have a problem. We entered back in with our old permit. The scanners had a tantrum and I just asked politely again and again to go to the “ Binoculars man “ saying I had a permit. When I arrived at the binoculars man, I said I have a permit for my binoculars, he said is it taxable...

    Ethiopia and binoculars

There shouldn’t be a problem. We were stopped, and they scrutinised our permit and serial numbers and then let us through. A friend was on a separate trip on transfer and his were confiscated and he collected them the next morning - took about an hour. We return through Addis in the next few...

What did you do/ say to end up keeping them? We are due to spend a week on the beach after 6 weeks birding in the Horn of Africa and of course will have our binoculars with us.
