Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Better day today at Cults. About 15:50 spotted a number of gulls circling high, and they were followed by 6 Buzzard, all going north (3, 2, 1) within 10 minutes, the about 5 minutes later a Red Kite (missing some secondaries on the right wing) appeared over the building not too high with another...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Interesting. This is really late for Swallows which in my experience used to reach E.Scotland on about the 16th April, give or take a few days either side, with a noticeable increase in the following two weeks. Not to even glimpse one till May is tribute to the lousy strong northerlies we've...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Just to confirm it's officially summer today as I saw 1 Swallow last night and another today at Cults. Sparrowhawk the only other notable occurrence. This is one of the slowest springs I've seen for a few years. I'm reduced to finding even Herring Gulls interesting.

    Danish Woodland Webcam

I've seen odd descriptions of the site by people on the 'chat' function, but I got the impression that the owner of the cam is a bit reticent about the actual location, possibly because he wants to discourage casual visitors. That's just a guess , though.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

2 probable White Wagtail this morning at Cults (noticeable black cap with clear distinction from neat light-mushroom-grey back). Also 2 Pied Wagtails around, though those are regulars. House Martin have shot up from 1 yesterday to an exciting 4 today. No Swallows or Sand Martins so far. Also...

    Danish Woodland Webcam

First warbler of the spring here - Chiffchaff (quality not being of the best). Otherwise the real stars of the show are the Yellowhammers of which the males show up very nicely. Also, female Hawfinch seen - up to 3 (2 males) in recent days:

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

3 Jays east this time at Cults at c. 09:30 this morning roughly parallel with South Avenue. There wasn't even a hint of them last year, but they seem to be about the area this year. Previously I had read somewhere that 'there are plenty of Jays on Deeside', but I'd always thought they would be...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Well, well. After years of seeing no Jays in Aberdeen itself this morning at Cults at 10.04 4 Jays arrived in a sort of loose, well-spaced flock, flying in, in no hurry, from the N and moving S over my building, calling as they went. Where had they come from? Unlikely to be spring migrants, I'm...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

09:05 Cults Lovely morning, as I gazed with shielded eyes into the bright sunshine. Everything normal, Blue Tits, Pigeon and sparrows, the usual Wood Pigeon as a dark shape at the top of a particular tree from which it regularly sings, when I heard the plaintive 'pee-oo' of a Buzzard. This...

    How do you pronounce Leica

Two of the most mispronounced bird names in my experience are "Rüppell's" & 'Radde's" Warblers. Not that it matters. And is it 'Hoo-poo' or 'Hoop-oh''? I've heard both.

First House Martin of the spring, 5 minutes ago over its usual hunting spot around the trees at the back of South Avenue, Cults, Aberdeen. somewhat earlier than they used to appear in the centre of town in previous years. Other recent visitors are Goldcrest (twice), Coal Tit, and Pied Wagtail...

    Birds fae Torry

When I was on Fair Isle in 1992 the warden (Paul Harvey) could identify Tree Pipits purely by the way they flew. Needless to say I've only ever been able to identify them if they're fluttering up and down singing above a tree. The words 'Pipit' and "Acrocephalus warbler" tend to make my brain...

First migrant Warbler I've seen on any webcam, I think:

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Cults 08:45 (Summer Time) this morning an unexpected fast moving compact flock of about 70 Redwing low over the building going roughly WSW, the first I have seen here since December. Other recent highlights include Kestrel (now rare compared to when I was starting out in the 70s), and singing...

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

First Red Kite of the year at Cults from NW in a long rapid glide ESE to roughly the area of Inchgarth Res. at 11a.m. Buzzard sightings have increased recently though not in any numbers, usually singles. Birdsong still on and off on account of the low temps, I think. Mainly Blackbird, Sparrow...

    Danish Woodland Webcam

Two Hawfinches at 08:44 today. Also seen: Yellowhammer, Siskin, Bullfinch, male Greenfinch and Goldfinch (a new one for the cam) as well as all the usual visitors. I now have a better idea what the call of Willow Tit sounds like, as one was very vocal yesterday:

Hawfinch at 08:23 (also Bullfinch female at 08:17). The Hawfinch is new to me for this cam).

    Danish Woodland Webcam

As well as Yellowhammer, Brambling just after 07:00 this morning and Grey Wagtail (new to me for the cam) at 12:24-25 on the burn. The dawn chorus at 7:00 was very loud (mainly Chaffinches, which are swarming at the moment). I wonder what spring migrants will happen along soon, if any:

Loch of the Lowes, Perthshire. Ospreys

The URL of this cam seems to change from day to day, and by going there direct it returns a message that the live stream is not available. So go to the YT username and click on that, and the cam, listed at the top, works from there. All very round and about.

Yep, it's a highlight, as is its less frequent mate. Also over the last couple of days 2 Siskins have been around, showing nicely.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

2 male Tawny Owls having a loud duet just now at Cults, South Avenue. Have had a brief call before but these are definitely signalling their presence to each other, very loudly in the calm weather tonight. Lovely stuff. No female-type calls yet.

Loch of the Lowes, Perthshire. Ospreys

This live webcam is already up and running as the female returned on 7th March (unusually early) and she is showing well today. I first went to see the nest in 1970 (a year after they appeared), when Ospreys were still fairly uncommon.
