Caspian, Yellow Legged and Herring Gulls

I would say it is genuinely rare there. That's why you have mucho more neartic gulls and less middle eastern gulls like, for example, the netherlands.

Two people break 10,000 species, and on the same day? Can it be?

Maybe not certain for birds and tours to wacth birds somewhere in places like PNG, but I could bet a small ammount that most of people paying to go to antarctica, or to "sea mammal" pelagics are not primarily motivated on the id or their lists of sea mammals.

Woodpecker ID Quiz for Eastern US Birders - If you can name them all, you're a woodpecker pro! (P.S. Bonus Points for Explaining Results)

AS a matter of fun fact, the first and only woodpecker seen by myself in the US for a decade was red-cokaded...

    Shaming birdwatchers on social media

I remember seeing at the entrance of a fenced penguin colony a photograph of a human with its dog. The guy had edited the head for privacy, but the dog was perfectably identifiably :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Complaining? I see a lot of fun around here, but not so much complaining. Maybe being non native english speaker makes my understanding blurry?

How did this started for all of you? (And my little story of how I got into this amazing hobby)

Top of the world! And that is why they failed in many aspects of creating large scale monitoring programs, something that eBird and other platforms are finally fixing (of course, with all the caveats, but are much better and worth)

    Bass Strait

Nice one. I miss them a lot. You know you may be able to eat them around the strait?. They are not worth eating...

    Bass Strait

    You have a nive day.

    Bass Strait

You cannot actually delineate the exact edges of the bird. It is an extreme picture with likely extreme aberrations.
  19. V

    Bass Strait

I would leave the ambiguity to the shoot conditions and camera processing.
  20. V

    Bass Strait

Yes, those are muttonbirds (short tailed shearwaters). Also agree that the boobies shall be Australasian gannets. I have spend a lot of time in the bass strait, and I miss it a bit.
  21. V

    Bass Strait

I guess you mean short tailed shearwaters (quite a few million breeding pairs in the strait) and a shy albatross?

What’s your favourite bird of prey?

I wish I could read some references regarding golden eagles reaching 100 mph in natural circumstances. That's what I mean.

Current fuss in North America about eponymous English bird names

Isn't funny/stupid that Sibley supports to remove patronyms from bird names, but retain it for his own book? I have a small shelf of bird books, and his guide is the only one with a patronym (his own name) on the title.

What’s your favourite bird of prey?

I don't think an eagle can even approach half of those 200 mph, at least by its own means.

How did this started for all of you? (And my little story of how I got into this amazing hobby)

I joined the local bird banding club around the age of 8. Few decades afterward I still go out birding every day for at least an hour.
