    Durham Birding

    Thanks. Not woodchat shrike. Not Chaffinch. Looking through books again, the nearest seem to be Pied Flycatcher (although it looked bigger and slimmer) or one of the wagtails (though not wagging to my memory). Maybe I just didn't expect to see one not on the ground!

    Aquatic plant for ID - Romania

    I was just going to confirm Frogbit. My pond now gets covered with it each year. It dies down in cold weather, then new little buds flat up to the surface next spring/summer.

    Can anyone help with this fungus?

    I have just looked in my fungi book and it looks like: Reticularia lycoperdon / Enteridium lycoperdon. Occurence-- throughout year but more prevalent in spring; frequent. Inedible Fruiting body 0.5 - 8cm diam.

    Which birds can I attract

    Don't forget clean water all the year (on the ground) for birds and hedgehogs. Fat balls or home made fat and seed mix will help especially in the winter, and you may attract flocks of long tailed tits. Mealworms or dried mealworms are loved by just about everyone! Have a feeder with mixed seed...

    Help needed with print ID, UK

    I don't think it was an otter- with the mud that soft, the 5th digit would defintely have shown on the print. Re size- is it small enough to be a mink or a cat?

    Thanks for both suggestions Mark and Steve. It doesn't have any red on yet, and no ears yet. I think the one I had a couple of years ago was greener. I'll try to get a photo if it comes again, but it will just be with a compact or mobile phone.

    I just had a melanistic pheasant in our East Boldon garden along with the usual pheasants. I think it was a male because there was a greenish irridescence to the neck, although it was all virtually black beneath the green tinge. Our ordinary male didn't chase it off.

    UK herps, 2013

    Catch it in net, place in pyrex dish with pond water in, lift up and look at underside, or watch the side of dish as it tries to climb out. I think I am leaning towards female smooth. Definitely not a great crested newt.

    Red squirrels in the UK

    I visited Formby last week. If you visit, try to get there as early as possible because they go back to bed when it gets warm. They also fill the feeders each morning, and apparently are often there waiting! Tip: Look to your right as you enter because there is a feeder there too.
