What did you see in your binoculars today?

Where are you guys? Is anyone else wondering? The eagles and Harlequins must be somewhere cold and near the ocean I'm guessing? And the warlbers in the mountains - which ones? Just curious. Those are amazing photos, people around here go nuts over Mourning or Golden-Winged :)

Brief comparison berween MHG VS EDG '8X42'

interesting, for me the CA control on 8x42 EDG is vastly better than 8x42 SF. I can't even use the SF's in winter snow. For me the EDG is the best is every category except for one flaw - the prism spikes. IMO that is what slightly degrades the sharpness. But all the other more expensive...

    Speculative 10x30/32 question

The top 10x32's are all pretty heavy for their size, I'd be tempted to get something small, light and fairly rugged like Monarch HG 10x30 or SFL 10x30, they are both quite a bit lighter than 32mm EL's

Can a 25mm binocular resolve sky/cloud detail well?

The Habicht keeps coming up again & again - are you sure you don't already have the best binocular for this? I would echo the comments on smaller binos, they don't interest me very much. Stick with the 42's. I don't watch clouds & sunsets much, but I love to lie on my lounge chair at night...

Leica, Zeiss & Swarovski binoculars compared: A personal report

I've heard so much about it - I didn't know what it was! I avoid looking close to the sun....it seems intuitive :) I don't think I'll be seeing VG again anytime soon....

    I see the future

I definitely need to put the work in to become fluent in birdsong. I can probably ID 20-25 species by sound now, I'd like to get that number much higher. I spend a lot of time hiking outdoors without binoculars and with heavy leaf canopy and most of the birding is by ear. I've never been...

    Cataracts and binoculars

They definitely get better over time - my mother's 1st one went fine - the 2nd one gave her problems for months, very upsetting at first, but now a couple years later it's working great. I've always tried to keep sunglasses during the day to protect my eyes from UV but I'm sure I'll need this...

Best 8x Bino’s for the money

It's true, EDG and Leica won't budge past that 7.7 degree benchmark in their 8x42's. If ultra-wide field is your cup of tea they don't have it....I figured any $3,000 bino should be excluded from the "value" discussion :) $1400 binos probably don't belong in there either..... I've always...

How sharp should the view be for a Nikon Monarch M5 in 8x42?

looks like the "refurburbished" didn't quite work! Maybe they'll end up sending you a new pair...good luck

Brief reviews about Zeiss victory SFL 8/10 x40

how about going by size - 8x32 is bigger and more comfortable to hold maybe, the SFL is much smaller.

Zeiss SFL 8x40 Eyecup Stray light issue!

that's funny - I did the same thing to the strap that came w/ my SF's! I cut it down and now it's on an older pair of porros. I wouldn't drop the price yet, it's probably no big deal, some people already have straps they like to use.

Which binocular(s) did you use today?

Just had an amazing sighting (for me) from sitting here at my computer desk - White-crowned sparrow landed on the lawn and I grabbed my 8x42 EDG and had a great look. It's a lifer for me (still a novice birder). They don't live here, it was likely a migrant heading north. Sorry...no pics...I...

Best 8x Bino’s for the money

To the question "what the best value in 8x" I would answer Nikon EDG 8x42. The dollar/yen exchange rate just hit an all-time record last week. I just checked Kyoie Osaka yesterday - right now I could buy a 7x42 EDG and get it air-shipped to the States for around $1300. That is a phenomenal...

Leica, Zeiss & Swarovski binoculars compared: A personal report

I think I saw "veiling glare" for the first time yesterday. I was birding & comparing 8x42 SF with my new 8x42 EDG. A bird landed in a tree with the sun just outside the FOV. I could see that milky glow in the lower 1/3rd of the SF's view, none in the EDG. So that's it! So it's only a...

    Car binoculars

My car routinely gets up to 100 degrees F or more inside, I've decided not to leave any binos in there. Temperatue cycling ages materials faster IMO. Plus it's more fun to carry a different pair to the car every time I go out

    I see the future

I can't help but ask - is this a good goal? To have tech do everything for you? And if so....where does it end? A robot to make love to your spouse for you? :):) I think I can say that on these forums...... I like to remind people - don't just think of what tech is going to do for...

    Swarovski focus wheels

Same here....I didn't like the EL focusers, but the 10x56 SLC feels OK to me. Not up to Zeiss/Nikon smoothness, but decent smoothness. It's easier to turn the wheel than the EL 32's and 42's I tried. FWIW, trying at the store - did not like CL focusers either, NL was OK. I just checked the...

Zeiss SFL 8x40 Eyecup Stray light issue!

just a little piece of unsolicited advice - I would include the Zeiss strap that came with your SFL's - especially for a near-new pair of used binos, people are going to want all the original pieces & parts that came with the binos. And the Zeiss straps are not available to purchase in the US...

Female chest friendly binocular harness recommendations?

I've got several different cases with shoulder-straps - this would be the Rolls-Royce option - a made-in-USA padded case - it's big enough to handle up to 56mm binos - for another $10 they will remove the waistpack (fanny pack) strap which I find annoying...

Female chest friendly binocular harness recommendations?

FWIW - it's not just female issue - I have rejected chest harnesses for the exact same reason. Discomfort in the man-breast area :) I find them incredibly uncomfortable and I'm surprised how many people use them. The binoculars do not move freely up & down either. Instead I've settled on...

White-throated sparrow, chipping sparrow, American robins outside my office window currently

Which binocular(s) did you use today?

A Great Blue Heron landed in the river next to the beer garden yesterday (the brewery is located in an 1800's brick mill building). I retrieved my "share" binoculars from the car - Nikon 7x35E porros. The hinge tension was set pretty loose when they were re-greased, a little too loose for my...

EII - Increased Brightness following on from 100th Anniversary Edition

IMO you can't judge a book by it's cover and you can't entirely judge the coatings by looking at the two outer lens surfaces. :) I've got an 80's pair of 7x35E and the later 90's "E-C" coatings version. My regular one has very dark purple coatings, the E-C's are green. To my eye they look...

    Nikon HG 8x30 dissection

I agree on those 8x30's, I may end up with a pair eventually, specifically for something I can hang around my neck while walking two large dog-animals. You want the smallest mass possible, even my 19-ounce 7x35E porros feel clumsy and large bouncing around on my chest. But the various 20's...

    Nikon SE

It's weird, I'm usually rain-friendly - skiing, hiking, camping, swimming in the rain - all good. Soccer of course. Even tennis and basketball, until the balls get soaked. For some reason I feel no need to take binos out in the rain....just not happening. Will have to see the shorebirds w/...
