Nikon 8x30 E2 eyecup modification/replacement
Here's one more 'end-view' picture with my hand in my normal position... My eyes are kinda' close together but even with the barrels spread a bit more, my thumbs would not curl around much more than they do. They certainly wouldn't ever get around far enough to touch the focuser from below. -

Yes, That's about where my thumbs ride but I don't roll them all the way up to touch the focuser brace and my thumbs tend to overlap when two-handing the SFL (which is almost all the time). I find the grip quite comfortable but I've never really paid much attention to where my thumbs rest when... -

rubber conditioner
FWIW... I use 303 Aerospace Protectant on everything rubber, including eyecups, and it seems to keep rubber in very good condition. Pull the cups off, wet a paper towel with 303 and apply liberally. Let it sit wet for a few minutes then wipe dry. Its mainly a UV inhibitor but seems to keep... -

Aggressive Hummingbird almost killed another on the window feeder today
Very interesting.... I saw this very same thing just today... Anna's hummingbirds. I also thought it was a mating pair but they ended up on the ground under the feeder and I saw the male was clutching the female's neck. I stepped outside, the male flew off and the female flew off about 30...- fogdart

Humming bird died in my garage.
Thanks for this! I had several Anna's in my shop this year at different times (high, white ceiling). I'll definitely try this in the future. I just leave the roll-up open and hope they'll find their way out. They sure like to stay up high though.- fogdart

Review of Kowa BD II 6.5x32 XD
Fast forward a year...Jupiter is at it's closest in many years. I've had the Kowa 6.5 out several times and find it picks up Jupiter and its Galilean moons nicely. The neighbor kids were thrilled when I handed them the Kowas and they viewed the moons themselves. Not sure they'd have been able... -
