Linnet or Twite -- West Mongolia

As Bewick suggests, although the bill looks tiny is it because of the perspective that we are only seeing the tip of a larger bill?

    Diver ID please?

Rising to the bait as well, I’ve found the Collins bird guide app is cheap, comprehensive, includes range maps and even songs and calls. Plus it’s always in your pocket. But it’s not as nice to browse back home

Song thrush? Rogaland, Norway 1st December 2023

Thanks Butty and 01101001 for your thoughts. There has been just one song thrush reported from this county in the last week, from another location. I was also surprised to see one on open coast, so good to check I wasn’t overlooking something else.

Song thrush? Rogaland, Norway 1st December 2023

Thanks for confirmation Bewick and PYRTLE. You both noticed on the one thing that was nagging at me and making me hesitant to call it song thrush, however unlikely the alternative would be

Song thrush? Rogaland, Norway 1st December 2023

Apologies for the poor pictures, but hopefully good enough that someone can confirm. I saw this bird yesterday (1st Dec) on open rocks by the sea close to Stavanger, Norway. Initially I assumed rock pipit but it didn't behave like typical rock pipits, it was very wary and stayed at a distance...

Santa Cruz CA, 16th September, Wren?

Thanks Andrew, Ken and Butty for the confirmation. Ebird shows no September records for Santa Cruz, so I really wanted a second opinion.

Santa Cruz CA, 16th September, Wren?

Hoping someone can identify this from these heavily cropped images I took last saturday (16th September), on cliffs next to a beach just north of Santa Cruz, CA. The closest I can get is a rock wren but it seems overall quite dark, and ebird shows very few records from the area so hopefully...

Juv Linnet? N Uist. Outer Hebrides

A very good find! And a nice change from the usual birdforum answer of "it's just a linnet".

Warbler ID, St John's Newfoundland August 2023

Thanks birdmeister and others for the ID. Not a bird I’ve seen before I don’t think I’d have easily got to Blackpoll based on my Sibley guide.

Warbler ID, St John's Newfoundland August 2023

Thanks Butty that was actually my original ID but I couldn’t see any records of pine warbler here in august so it seemed unlikely.

Warbler ID, St John's Newfoundland August 2023

I am out of my comfort zone with North American warblers so looking for some help. I 'think' this is a young/moulting yellow warbler, but I have not found anything online or in field guide to fully convince myself. Please can someone confirm or correct? Both pictures are the same bird seen in...

Need help with pipit - Norway (Finnmark)

Tend to agree with Mark, it’s a bit tricky to see here but the dark smudgy patch in the middle of the breast is good for meadow

    Marsh sandpiper or common greenshank

Agree with the ID and just wanted to say great picture.

Agree with aeshna5, and to my eyes the dark bill tip is quite clear in these pictures

Unknown song, SW Norway 27th May 2023

I am hoping someone can help me out with the call in Clips 1 and 2. This was taken today 27th May 2023 in southern Rogaland, Norway. The clips are quite short and noisy with a lot of wind but hopefully there is enough there for an ID? Habitat was reedbeds at a field edge next to slow moving...

Pied or white wagtail, SW Norway May 2023

Thanks very much Harry and Rotherbirder, my suspicions are confirmed. I find details of wagtails such a minefield so I wanted an experienced opinion

Pied or white wagtail, SW Norway May 2023

Being so common I've never paid too much attention to ID of pied/white wagtails but took a couple of pictures of this bird last night and it struck me as unusually dark, although it was towards dusk and the light was fading. Can anyone offer an opinion if this is an alba or yarrellii wagtail? I...

    Two garden visitors Kent UK

I really like the Collins Bird Guide app version too. It’s not quite as “nice” as having a real paper field guide, but more portable and convenient to have it with you all the time for a quick check. Also includes songs and calls, really useful to check something you hear and are not 100% sure...

    Marsh tit or coal tit?

Sounds like great tit to me, it doesn't have the "squeakiness" of a coal tit. I've only heard marsh tit calling, but from recordings I have listenedd to the marsh tit song also seems quite different from your bird,

Epping Forest-female Great Spotted Woodpecker with a seemingly red forehead?

That’s fine, I just wasn’t sure if there was some other potential ID that could be considered here. The exact question wasn’t clear to me on this one

Epping Forest-female Great Spotted Woodpecker with a seemingly red forehead?

Regardless of the image quality, I am unclear what, if anything, the identification question is here? Is this a question of just a possible aberrant greater spotted woodpecker or is there something else that this could involve? No one has addressed this part yet!

White duck - Stavanger, Norway, March 2023

Hi Andy, I think I saw a couple of these on Store Stokkevannet on Sunday, and as others have already said I noted them as domestic ducks. I’ve not seen them in that spot before though, although a mandarin duck was there in the past. If this is the same location then keep looking because as well...

    Norfolk Pipit ID

I know this can be very variable in meadows, and can also be subject to personal interpretation in tricky photos, but the legs here have an orangey-pink colour to my eyes. I would expect light pink legs and base of bill for tree pipit, which I don’t see here. Again, hopefully others can comment.
