Need Father/Son Birding Trip Destination Idea

I've learned to bite the bullet when it comes to flights, especially around holidays like Christmas. Most places that show a "cheap flight" result in having to leave at an inconvenient time or day of the week, with horrible layovers or are simply in the middle of the worst season for that...

Need Father/Son Birding Trip Destination Idea

Personally birded with Nelson for a 6 day period with a base in Mindo, got to see 330 species (30 more heard only), great guide, caters to your needs and updates the itinerary on the ground based on what targets I needed. If you are not interested in full time birding, it might be an option to...

Maybe 2 Vireos, South Padre Island Convention Ctr, TX, USA

Agree with the IDs, Warbling Vireo as the chest/belly is paler and the line that goes through the eye does not reach the bill like in a Philadelphia. The other vireo is a Bell's Vireo of the Eastern subspecies, which is why it's more yellowish overall. Black-whiskered is an overall rare bird in...

Songs that mention species of bird

"Eagle" by Crazy Lixx, Swedish rock band obsessed with everything 80s, but they made a nice lyric that works, even if you forget the motif of their song being Rocky IV. Lyrics for the hook: Far away in the open wild Where the heart of winter lies In the land of the midnight sun I'm free like an...

Bird ID Inquiry from La Paz Waterfalls, Costa Rica

Black Phoebe seems uncommon in the area, but seeing the field marks noted, I agree that Black Phoebe is a more likely candidate. Thank you for the feedback.

Bird ID Inquiry from La Paz Waterfalls, Costa Rica

Based on eBird the species is not found in La Paz, but based on the name, I found that Slaty Flowerpiercer has the same color as that bird and found in La Paz. Now I wonder if that bill just look straight because it's still young?

Bird ID Inquiry from La Paz Waterfalls, Costa Rica

I have a friend visiting Costa Rica and she asked me if there was a way to ID this juvenile bird, it was seen in La Paz Waterfalls, but I have no clue what it could be:

    Mindo Lodges

Not sure if there have been any recent blockades/riots in the country, but when there are no issues, I noticed that driving through the Northern loop (Quito, Mindo and eastern slope lodges), a rental car could get you to 90% of the sites. The main roads in the country were paved better than the...

Small bird on high canopy in garden in Arusha Tanzania

Hard to tell, but leaning towards a Honeyguide, size wise both Pallid and Lesser are good contenders since they are mostly gray outside of the olive green wings, pink at the base of the bill, small size and are relatively common in Arusha. Gray Cuckooshrike is not a small bird and would have a...

    Gentrification attracts wildlife

To be fair, most of us don't get to see 1,000 bird species when we leave our homes, but every kid today has a Switch or another device listing over 1,000 different Pokemon to play/interact with.

    The 10% Club - Milestones

Depending on how my luck goes, I might do Australia or Malaysia next year. Borneo can be affordable if planned directly without using a big company, if you don't mind sharing the trip with another newbie birder to the region, maybe we can plan something (just need to wait until September to see...

    The 10% Club - Milestones

We all started there, but I think only Kaestner belongs to the true 1% of birders in the numbers game (until someone comes and asks him to share the 10,000+ title with proof).

Jamaica: Birding the Land of Wood and Water

Definitely the easiest of the main Caribbean islands to explore if you are limited on time or don't have Spanish at the ready. Plus, the birds are incredibly tame, outside of some pigeon species (none of which were endemic), every bird on the island was cooperative and easy to get decent shots...

    The 10% Club - Milestones

Have 3 goals for my birding life: See over 60% of all bird species (currently at 15% with 1702 species seen, no heard-onlys in my life list yet). See and photograph all of the bird families, so far I'm 57% through that with 143 of the 249 families seen, with the most recent additions being...
