Brief October trip to SE Arizona.

Yes, sorry Jens, Santa Rita. I went with guide to California Gulch in 4x4 but road we took (FR217 off Ruby Rd) was, with care, doable with a saloo - other's there had done it. However, would recommend this being the one place to go with guide as (a) would know exactly where to go for birds and...

Brief October trip to SE Arizona.

Hi Jens, I was in southern Arizona 2 weeks ago - wonderful area. In addition to ebird, would recommend keeping an eye on the Arizona maillist for sightings http://birding.aba.org/maillist/AZ A few thoughts on your target list: 1. If flying in to Phoenix, would recommend ebird hotspot "Baseline...

    Sparrow - Tucson, Arizona

Many thanks, Andrew, for clarification. My Peterson guide doesn't show this stripe|!|

    Sparrow - Tucson, Arizona

I thought about Brewer's Andrew but, based on bird seeming to have a weakish central crown stripe, had discarded that ID.

    Sparrow - Tucson, Arizona

I think this may be Clay-colo(u)red but then again I think it might be a juvenile Chipping. Then again, might be something completely different. Pictures taken two weeks ago. Your thoughts greatly appreciated. Many thanks John

    Maghreb Wheatear

Just to say that last week I had 3 Maghreb Wheatear at the Dave Gosney "Amerzgane Road" site. A lone male was at the single bush at 31 01 34N 07 13 21W that then flew 200m north to base of hill. A m+f pair was at the wadi at 31 00 13N 07 13 49W.

    Tern - Ythan Estuary

Thanks Andrew. I thought it was Arctic but just checking to save me worrying. A great trip, as always, to the area. The scenery is just stunning. Only downside was the weather (snow, sleet and hail) in Cairngorm area.

    Tern - Ythan Estuary

I had been looking at my picture of these terns and noticed that the left hand one seems to have a much longer tail and also a sleeker profile when compared with the Arctic Tern. Could it be a Roseate? I don't think they are common at this site. Picture taken last Monday. Your thoughts greatly...

    The Highlands and Islands Thread

Might be worth keeping an eye out for news on Loch Garten caper - it's not been seen for last 6 days including today :-C 4+, probably 6, Golden Eagles in Findhorn Valley though :t:

    A week in the Everglades

Just to say that the C-357 Sparow Fields no longer seem to exist. It's a construction site and they wouldn't allow me to enter when I was there recently :-C Cheers John

    Prequel to "Jamaica Toddlercare"

I had promised Larry Sweetland (see his report in this forum) that I would cobble together a report of my trip to Jamaica. Here it is along with a few of my better pictures - didn't have many|=@| - attached as a pdf file. Enjoy (I hope). Cheers John

    Jamaica Toddlercore

Sounds like you had a great trip in the end, Larry. I'll try to cobble together a report of my trip in the coming week and post it here - will undoubtably be shorter as we both went to the same sites and I'll just reference you. Errrrmmm.... the name is John Fordham not Forgham. The only reason...

    Lesser Flamingo

Am going to be in the Donana area next weekend and am hoping to see the Lesser Flamingo if still there. According to "Rare birds in Spain" these are at Veta La Palma. I believe this is a commercial concern. Is there public access available? If so, where exactly is Veta La Palma? I know it is in...

    Cap Rhir

Off-limits isn't quite correct. If you look at the picture in first post and zoom in, can see that there is car parking available behind the crane on left. This was being used by many a wind surfer whilst I was there and can certainly sea-watch from there but not quite the same thing as...

    Old Mine Trail

    Old Mine Trail

Many thanks Niels. I hadn't known about this ebird option - really useful:t: Cheers John

    Old Mine Trail

Am going on an independent trip to Jamaica this coming February. Many of the organized tours include the "old mine trail" in their itienraries and it appears that this is a great location for birding. However, I can't find anywhere that tells you exactly where it is - one itinerary mentions that...

    Cap Rhir

A hotel could be a good Base for seawatching there - I was more concerned that is something related to the oil industry. Yes, passed through Ouarzazate but didn't notice any significant construction going on. I did find that they are building on western edge of Tagdilt track so can no longer...

    Gull - Bucks

Whoops, sorry Steve, I just hadn't recognized that pile of earth was there|:$|. Now understand - many thanks.

    Gull - Bucks

Thanks Steve. What interested me was the tail structure - it appears to be tailless or is it just me.

    Gull - Bucks

I was at Hedgerley landfill a couple of days ago, distantly photographing the Glaucous Gull that had been around. Was just looking at pictures and there was a gull close by that attracted my attention. Only have 2 pictures - attached - and I can't figure out the tail structure. Can anyone help...

    Cap Rhir

Anyone know what is being built at Cap Rhir? It's currently a building site (see attached) and seawatching from the Point not really possible.

    A few from Morocco

My original thought was Desert Warbler (looks exactly right) but was put off this by the apparant lack of a yellow eye. Attached is my only other picture of the bird, which isn't that helpful, but, even though in shade, would expect to see pale colour rather than dark black. If any help...
