Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

Is it only the green coating that’s affected? I saw Sand and Orange for sale recently.

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

You would not enjoy shipping from NZ if you think that is expensive. I posted a letter (single sheet of A4 in an envelope) by courier to London yesterday (just tracked and signature, not superfast delivery or anything) and the cost was equivalent to US$36. To send something as valuable as...

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

Ok but 100 years isn’t “never” and if the instrument is built well enough it could easily be used for most if not all of that period.

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

I don’t know about Swaro, but my Leica UV from circa 2007 came with a 30 year warranty. Not too long before that Leica binoculars had lifetime warranty I think. It’s notable that warranty length appears to be inversely proportional to quality of product in many modern instances. AFAIK...

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

I still needed diopter correction before like most people presumably do. If there were no need for it I’m sure binoculars makers wouldn’t spend time and money including it. Now I just need different correction. For example my UV 10x32 are set to +4 and that works fine.

Is Swaroclean still used on any current production binoculars?

Just that. I know it’s not on NL but is it still used on any current products? I’ve seen shop listings for SLCs and BTX that mention it but they might just be inaccurate out of date listings copied from older catalogues.

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

No no longer need any glasses other than off the peg no prescription sunglasses. I used to wear graduated bifocals.

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

I literally don’t notice. I didn’t when I achieved the same result using only one contact either. It’s simply presented as whatever I look at is in focus. It’s technically correct name is LASIK monovision.

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

Well, for the same reason I needed it before I had the surgery I suppose?

How did you find them overall compared to the SLC? It’s not really obvious to me exactly what the differences are between SLC, EL and NL. I know in theory it’s good, better, best but exactly how is rarely if ever codified in one place!

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

Thanks. I’ll investigate and might get those if I get the right info. I’ve got to go back to the U.K. in October to visit my mother so I could have them sent to her and collect them. I could probably sell them in New Zealand for 30% more than that if I don’t like them!

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

Yes. As a photographer, glasses were a huge pain. I couldn’t see the entire frame properly because modern cameras have poor eye relief in comparison to their earlier ancestors. Eventually I defaulted to one disposable contact in one eye and nothing in the other, which worked but of course...

Are FL still made? I can get them here in 32 but nothing else unless I’m buying rangefinders.

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

None taken. It stems from my LASIK surgery. One eye was corrected for long vision and the other got close vision. In the brain the two images merge so I have perfect sight from about 8” to infinity. Of course in binoculars, each eye is effectively looking through its individual telescope and...

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

Do all the Ultravid line behave similarly? I get on well enough with my 10x32 ones so I wondered if that increased the likelihood of getting on with the other versions?

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

We don’t seem to get high end Nikon here. The most expensive are the Monarch 5 aside from the Astroluxe. I doubt the WX will arrive here! Likewise I can’t find high grade Meopta. The most expensive are $899 compared to $4500 for Noctivid. I doubt that’s a fair comparison! I had some 12x42 NL...

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

Hmmm. I have a pair of pre HD+ UV 10x32 and they can be provoked to produce yellow fringing on things like mountain ridges against the sky. It’s not so much that the CA itself bothered me as much as the fact that it shouldn’t be there in a top of the table binocular. I shoot Leica M...

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

The SF was simply unusable. It had insufficient correction range to correct for my eye. Other than that it seemed nice. The Noctivid was nice but CA was more what I’d expect in something 2/3rds of the cost. It just didn’t feel like it was worth the asking price.

Tried Noctivid and SF 10x today

So. I got a chance to try both of these today. Probably heresy but I didn’t like either. The Noctivid was very good but the CA purple fringing in winter tree branches against the sunny blue sky was really not good. The SF didn’t even get out of the gate because the diopter adjustment isn’t...

Problem with green coating of EL SV 8x32

I’m no expert on materials or binoculars. Is there some reason rubber, a natural product, cannot be used?!

Is this the binocular equivalent of “go woke, go broke”?

    Duovid 10/15 x 50 coatings question

So tomorrow I am spending some time at a dealer where I can compare the only demo Noctivid 10x available (had to ask Leica in Auckland to pretty please send them to the dealer down here) with the 10x SF from the Blue Square. He has those in stock. One other binocular that has piqued my interest...

    New Coatings on NL ?

New Zealand likes banning things. It has an actual government job called ‘Chief Censor’! I’ll be grabbing some Alphas soon and those with effective coatings are in the short list. Those without… not.

Best get shopping now before the Eurocrats ban everything then I guess.
