Wearing white and talking while birding?

Sounds about right on the movement thing. But OH NO!, do we wear dark colors to keep the ticks away or light to repel the mosquitoes? I guess it's a matter of which diseases you prefer.

Wearing white and talking while birding?

I've found these answers interesting in that so many don't think that clothing colors matter. I'm still not convinced to stop wearing my greens and khakis but I can be stubborn. Many times I've "surprised" birds but part of that could be due to my slow walking style while birding. Certainly...

Wearing white and talking while birding?

There is a collection of birding short stories titled, "Real Birders Don't Wear White". That title was taken from the story written by Sheri Williamson who compiled the collection. In her story she relates how she was guiding a group in the Huachuca Mountains in southeast Arizona to find a...

Wearing white and talking while birding?

I believe that dark colors attract certain insects but there's no way I'm wearing something light. When alone, I walk like a cat, slowly and quietly. Yes, some birds still see me but I'm convinced that I get fairly close to some of them because they haven't yet noticed me.

Wearing white and talking while birding?

I'm a little confused about good birding techniques. When I'm out birding I wear clothing that helps me to blend in with my environment. I'm convinced that that works yet I've seen guides wearing light colored clothing in dark jungle areas. I also try to be quiet when walking and talk in a low...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

I've heard of wearing a red cap, but I also wonder what the other birds will think of a giant red blob visibly moving down the trail?

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Here's a story to illustrate why I've been happy with my umbrella. Recently in the Ecuadorian Amazon, where the temps tend to be about 90 degrees F with 80%-90% humidity, I was hiking in the jungle with my guides at o'dark thirty. It started to rain, a BIG rain. I popped open my umbrella and...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Sorry to give you contradicting information but since I first posted the question I have visited Indonesia, Ecuador and Panama. As has been mentioned, you will probably already be wet from sweat BUT I found that an umbrella is definitely the way to go IF you are in the lowland tropics. I have a...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

I always have multiple lens cloths with me when I travel and they're in multiple small plastic baggies. I've never run out.

    Sacha Lodge Ecuador

Terrific! We birded 4 islands in Indonesia. The birding was tough at times with so many species in the canopies, yet there were so many lifers for us that we were able to get decent views of numerous species. For the birding and the cultural possibilities, I give Indonesia two thumbs up. Heading...

    Sacha Lodge Ecuador

I’ve heard good things about Jorge. Good luck at Sani! I’m overnighting in Tokyo en route to 2 months of birding and cultural activities in Indonesia. May the birding gods bless us both!!

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Hmm, I actually haven’t looked into pants. I’ve got a collection of nylon hiking pants. You just gave me more work to do!😆

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

FYI, I DID order the camo umbrella hat. The band was uncomfortable and the umbrella was only large enough to protect your head, not the rest of your body. I sent the umbrella back.

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

If you look higher in this thread, you'll see the recommendation of the Huriia umbrella holder and the Montbell umbrella. I bought both. I tried them on in my living room and it appears as though the combo will work although I will probably get a bit wet as the umbrella is just a bit smaller...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Great story and info, Bryan. I've purchased a camo-patterned umbrella with a hands-free harness that is less than optimal but just might work well enough to allow me to photograph while staying dry.

    Sacha Lodge Ecuador

Hi Christopher, I just stumbled onto this thread. I guess your trip is coming up quickly. Good luck! I'll be headed to EC next January and February and after much research I also opted for Sani over Sacha. Sacha looked great and offers a shot at a Harpy Eagle, but it's also about 40% more...

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

I also take photos whenever possible, so this should be fun! Ordered both an umbrella in a camo color and a hands-free bracket to put it in. Neither have arrived yet. Fingers are crossed that this will work. Don't know if I mentioned this but I'm birding 23 days in Sulawesi and Halmahera. I'm...

    Hello from Tucson, AZ

My feelings exactly sans the lens envy part. I get some really nice shots with my Sony, but as you alluded to, not always.

    Hello from Tucson, AZ

Welcome. I've found this site invaluable when it comes to knowledge sharing. I lived in Sierra Vista for almost 3 decades. Are you using a Sony RX-10, IV?

    Hello from Tucson, AZ

Another ex-Sierra Vistan. I lived there full time from 1983-2012 and worked as a photographer for the Sierra Vista Herald. After 28 years I became a birder. What a great place to be a baby birder!

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

Thanks, and I've come to almost the same conclusion. I'll pack a rain jacket, rain pants and I'm going to look into suitable umbrellas. Do you carry your umbrella in your hand or do you have a hands-free attachment?

Poncho vs. Rain Jacket and Pants

"Great" in terms of big, huge, MONSTROUS, but certainly not "great" in terms of "yeah, I'd do THAT again if I could".:ROFLMAO:

    Ecuador Amazon Questions

Thanks ssaibal! We ARE planning to hit all the spots you mentioned and more as we'll be in EC almost 2 months. Yes, probably the best place to see a Harpy Eagle is the Darien Gap area and seeing that bird would be a great excuse to go there, but if I can see one on this trip all the better!

    Ecuador Amazon Questions

Thanks for your input, pbjosh. There are two draws there, the canopy walkway and the better possibility of seeing a Harpy Eagle. I haven't compared the ebird lists yet, but I am lister, photographer and of course nature lover, so I doubt I'd get bored.
