Wow! Joe, that is a beautiful shot! Thanks!

Sony a7ii are full-frame cameras ok for digiscoping?

Thanks. I think any of these configurations would be an improvement over my cell phone. Great photo!

Sony a7ii are full-frame cameras ok for digiscoping?

Thanks for posting. Relative to digiscoping, the only real reason I wondered if full-frame was better is that it seems that the spotting scope limits the light more than a regular camera lens ( I might be wrong, but that is my perception through experience with my scope and phone). So, if a...

    Star Testing

Good points, Joachim. I definitely prefer to take photos at a lower magnification. I am sure that it would make a difference. Also, the reality is, I probably should just get a camera if I expect better photos. A phone just doesn't really cut it. Anyway, thank you all. It is much...

    Star Testing

Thanks, Binastro. Honestly, even if you were, it is deserved. LOL. It really is difficult. And, me, being me, I have limited knowledge. Really, I think I have just enough knowledge to be suspicious of my optics, but not enough to confidently say either way about their "cherry-ness". So...

Thank you, Henry. I appreciate your explanation. I see your point about the CA.

    Star Testing

Thank you, Henry. Probably a dumb question, but if the orientation of the oval shape changes from horizontal to vertical, even with my head in the same position but changing from inward defocus to outside of focus, would that not indicate that it is the scope? Sorry if that is a silly...

    Star Testing

Thank you. I appreciate it. So, I was able to have a few minutes outside before work this morning. Under a real star, and at full power (120x with the extender) the image was far less astigmatic, but still slightly oblong in each direction. But, other than the difference in the fuzziness and...

    Star Testing

Thank you. It is possible that there is still a slight bit of astigmatism, but definitely nothing as obvious as the photos. The scope is sitting on the enclosed/unheated porch until morning. I get up early and it is finally supposed to be clear, but frigid. Hopefully I can make sure a true...

How bad is this one? I couldn't avoid the thermal issues. Images at the ep are round, but they're swimming. However, the outside image is clearer than the inside, no matter how I cut it. Coma seems slightly evident inside focus. Keep or send back? Also, this was with the doubler attached, at...

    Age of my zeiss?

Hello! No apology necessary. None at all. Thank you for your input and observations. For the most part, with the little bit of use so far, I concur. I am not sure how quickly it will happen, but I am quite certain I will be sending them out for servicing. Once I decide if I am keeping...

    Age of my zeiss?

Arrived today. They look pretty cosmetically. Very dim view, though. It appears they need serious cleaning internally. Can't tell by looking casually, but looking through them the image is very dim. The focuser is a bit backlashy. Not sure if it needs serious attention. Seems to focus...

Thanks! I took a chance. Hopefully, it is not a basket case. We will see in a few days.

Sony a7ii are full-frame cameras ok for digiscoping?

I have messed around with phonescoping for a bit. Always frustrated with even my "best" photos, due to quality. I realize that generally, digiscoping, with a camer or a phone, is always likely lesser than a "real" camera and lens combo. However, I like the challenge. There is a Sony a7ii for...

    Age of my zeiss?

Also, to show my ignorance, all of this time I was thinking that "Oberkochen" was a model name. I really surprise myself with how much I never comprehended. Wow!

    Age of my zeiss?

Good point! My apologies for the no photos post. The only images were from the for sale ad, so I do not own them. I assumed that posting those photos would be taboo. If it is ok, then I am happy to post them. Regardless, thank you for the info. I am probably going to take a chance. The...

    Star Testing

I agree, regarding the in-field performance being the deciding factor. However, since there is only a small window of time to use it before it is permanently mine, and I have limited opportunity to get use it in real circumstances, the star test is really helpful for me. But, you are right...

    Phonescoping with Galaxy s21

I use one, but was happier with my Note 10+ I had before. I use mine in pro mode, but really only use the manual focus. The rest of the settings, like Ian said, are mostly auto. Occasionally I will adjust the shutter speed, because the image is overexposed on the screen. Otherwise, nothing.

Anyone? I might just take a chance. They look nice in the photos.

    Considering giving up on digiscoping

Thanks, Joe. Do not go to trouble for me, but I am interested to see them. I know editing by a knowledgeable person can make a fair photo into something really nice. But, you need something good to start. LOL.

    Star Testing

Thanks, Binastro! I have looked at defocused stars dozens of times, but never quite trust my judgement. I hope my adapter arrives in the next day or two, so I can post a photo. I am trying to use the scope as much as possible to get a feel for it. I hope to compare my astro refractor and...

    Age of my zeiss?

Once again, looking to you guys for info. Would a legit Zeiss 10x50 porro have a serial number 816xxx? They are marked "Carl Zeiss 10x50" on the left prism cover. No marking on the right side. Serial number is on the field side, and on what appears to be the CF knob. The knob is a thin...

    Considering giving up on digiscoping

I think this thread is beneficial and I appreciate all of the input from the folks on here. Most of you, if not all, are far more experienced birders and photographers than I. Even though I did not start this thread, thank you for letting me piggyback. I do not intend to hijack it, but...

    Star Testing

These are good questions, at least to me. So, thanks for posting them. I am currently evaluating a new scope. I purchased one, returned it, and now am trying to make sure I do not jump the gun on THIS one. I MIGHT have jumped it on the first one, but I am pretty sure I didn't. Anyway, my...
