    Dotterel

Too many people on the Cairnwell as they can get up there on the ski lift, no Dotties round there too much disturbance, you need to get away from the beaten track, rather than the actual Monroe, try the tops nearby.

We have Swifts in the village, at least 5 though kinda tricky counting 'em, Swallows and House Martins too, all of which were few and far between last year.

Back to Montreathmont today, rather hot and bright with very little about, but wanted to check on the Woodpeckers nest, all is well. Usual stuff in there, Robin, Dunnock, Vole(not sure which to fast to tell), Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Blackbird, Chaffinch and an...

Montrose Basin and the surrounding area

Had a wander to Scurdie Ness lighthouse, hoping for a sight of one of the Red Backed Shrikes, but none to be seen. Sea flat calm, very distant rafts of Kittiwake's and Auks and a few young Eiders close in. Rock Pipits, Skylarks in profusion, a couple of Linnets and Whitethroat, nice day for a walk.

Montreathmont forest visit briefly today, a bit quiet this time of year, Male Bullfinch, Chaffinch, Siskin along with Blue, Coal and Great Tits, Blackcap and Goldfinches on the track. A Red Squirrel popped into say hello, saw three Brown Hare leverets and a couple of adults on the way home.

    Perthshire

Whilst Beavers in the right place are environmentally advantageous to the countryside, the illegal machine gun spraying of thousands of them all over Scotland is a disaster for the animals and the environment. The RSPB are having to put chicken wire round trees they want to keep, which I guess...

    Perthshire

Went fishing today, didn't catch anything, but the wildlife was very good. Was on the Ericht below Blairgowrie, firstly greeted by much Beaver damage, but no animals, then found Otter prints in the mud and found what could be a holt. Sand Martins nesting in the river banks, Pied Wagtails...

Nice wander round the village fields, 4 Yellowhammers, a lot of singing Skylarks, a female Reed Bunting, Wren, Chaffinch and six rather late on parade Fieldfares(though the rivers and lakes in Finland are only just melting, so perhaps they aren't so late). Pheasant calling in the distance...

    Birding at Loch of Kinnordy

Had an hour or two in the Gulley and Swamp hides, it was quite windy, the water is high and there was not a lot going on, plenty of carnage from the Beavers, I wonder how long it will take for them to be fed up with the damage? Marsh Harriers showed, no Ospreys, one Red Kite, the odd Sedge...

    Angus Hills and Glens

A very cold strong wind blowing down Glen Esk, even with a bit of sunshine, I was looking for reptiles but found none. A single Red Kite, couple pf Buzzards, the Eagles seem to have been pushed away by the forestry work, not seen any for a while. Good numbers of Lapwing and Curlew, dozens of...

Montrose Basin and the surrounding area

A windy walk round the village was mostly about the Skylarks singing, though a furry highlight was a Stoat running up the road in front of us, seen a couple in recent weeks, probably after all the Rabbits that seem to have exploded in numbers.

    Angus Hills and Glens

Always a chance of Bearded Tits there too, more often heard than seen, same goes for the Water Rail. To the left of the hide along the waters edge is a good spot for waders like Ruff.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

I thought that might be the case, I have family in Norfolk and they are well established on the Broads, I think it was in the 1980's when I first remember them, those African Geese(don't know their latin name) are also more common, no doubt they might spread around as well.

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Opposite Lower Crowhillock farm, not far from Kinneff church with a pair of African Geese? https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@56.8633873,-2.2525465,3a,75y,285.06h,86.7t/data=!3m9!1e1!3m7!1sMBpqjzvNMAZiayhbZfr7pA!2e0!7i16384!8i8192!9m2!1b1!2i39?entry=ttu

Wild in Aberdeen - City and Shire

Trip over the Cairn o'Mount in a howling gale, nothing seen at all, same on the return down the Netherly Road apart from corvids and a Herring Gull. Odd find in a pond of flood water not far from the Todhead lighthouse was a pair of Egyptian Geese.

    Angus Hills and Glens

With yet more bad weather on the way, we went for a drive and wander in the Glens, began in Lethnot, round over the Catheruns and then up Glen Esk. Lack of Lapwings and Curlews, plenty of Red Kites, Wheatear, Stonechats, Oystercatchers in their hundreds, a Magpie( you would not believe how far...

Montrose Basin and the surrounding area

Just been out trying to photograph the Aurora and whilst stood in the dark on the railway bridge a Barn Owl came up off the trackside over the bridge and nearly hit me in the face, must have been no more than 6 feet away, amazing.

    Braemar in late April

We all have different experiences, I have found them tricky to find there, when there's no snow, it has been said that the consensus is that the Hares and Ptarmigan seem to stay closer to humans as they seem to know the Eagles stay away, so maybe they are getting used to people more. I would...

    Braemar in late April

Ptarmigan will be tricky, look on the Munro tops, but not Cairnwell as it's too busy as the ski lift takes walkers up there.

    Angus Hills and Glens

Another great trip into the Glens, first thing we saw was a Golden Eagle, which sadly vanished before I could get a camera on it. No Red Kites(after me saying they are every where), but 5 Red Squirrels and a couple of Red Grouse displaying. The Curlews are in good numbers again as are the...

    Angus Hills and Glens

Had a cracking trip to Glen Clova and Glen Doll(watch the huge pot holes by the bridge at the Hotel), began with two Red Kites, as common as Sparrows round here.....lol Then about every few hundred yards Buzzards everywhere, sadly no more raptors. A couple of hundred Curlews and a few dozen...

    A trip to Lewis & Harris - Feb 2024

Enjoy, it's a fab place I know well, Reef beach is a good sheltered spot to see Divers, turn right as you get off GB and drive slowly to Mangersta beach, once you pass the right turn for Kneip you are in Eagle alley all the way to the garage and community shop.

Montrose Basin and the surrounding area

Heard a couple of Skylarks on our walk around the village fields, not full blown display singing, but nice to see them out on the fields, a pair of Magpies look like they are starting nest building as are the village Rooks.
