Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

I suspect that he will be able to use them for many things. Does he wear glasses?

Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

Yeah, maybe pockets are the right choice if they are primarily for opera. 8x20s are cool. They are about as small as they come. And I love Trinovids. That pair of 7x35s are also a pair of Trinovids. 8x20s are often described as fiddly to use, and they are, but I've still used and enjoyed them...

That is a good deal on those. They retail for $480.

And here is a size comparison between the three.

Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

And here is a pair of 7x35. This is a little bit of an oddball size, but it is pretty close to the size of a typical 8x32.

Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

And here is a pair of 8x42s.

Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

Denco above has a good recomendation. Oh good. Figuring out the size and magnification is half the battle. There was a class or style of binoculars for opera that were very small. It seems to be a dying breed though. Below is a pair of 8x25s in my hand. I am a 6'2" man with regularly sized hands...

Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

That is a tough question to answer. 42mm binoculars are not typically called "compact binoculars." 8x42 binoculars have a magnification of 8x, meaning that an object will appear 8 times larger through the binoculars than with your naked eye. Put another way, an object will appear as if you are...

Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

I would buy him a pair of 8x42 Nikon Monarch 5 binoculars if I were in your situation.
  10. Q

    NL >=50 mm versions?

Wow, the prospect of a 14x52 seems unpopular. I would definitely buy a pair of 14s. I was actually hoping for 15s. I use my 15x56s a lot.

Why do you need a wide field of view for birding?

Yes! Thanks Hermann. Well said. This is a specific example of my thoughts in general. Wide fields are great, but there are many qualities to consider.

The Eagle (well the Hawk) has landed

I really like those grippy ribs on the skinny hinge. I’ve never noticed that detail before.

Why do you need a wide field of view for birding?

I am no longer all that interested in really wide fields as a deciding factor in my purchasing decisions. Wider is nice, but there are a lot of qualities that go into a great view. Most modern binos have sufficiently wide fields for birding. I have owned SFs and NLs though, so I had to try them...

The Eagle (well the Hawk) has landed

Thanks so much for the great photos. Cool binos. Let us know your detailed thoughts once you have some experience with them.
  15. Q

Most color strength in a binocular view?

Color strength. I like that. Leicas have the strongest colors in my opinion.
  16. Q

What did you see in your binoculars today?

Oh. Of course. I understand your question now. I'm not sure if eggs have started hatching here yet. We've had a pretty late spring so far. I'll start paying better attention.
  17. Q

What did you see in your binoculars today?

I didn't see. But I assumed they ate them.

What did you see in your binoculars today?

This is one of my favorite threads. Thank you all so much for the lovely photos. Today I had the pleasure of watching Bald Eagles diving and grabbing clawfulls of small fish - maybe herring or baby salmon. They would come up with a few in each claw. It was pretty neat, and something that I had...

    Pocket binoculars

Agreed. The Ultravid 10s also have really nice ergonomics for a pair of pockets.

    My first pair, help please.

No need to be apologetic about being "that guy." This is the best collection of binocular nerds on the internet, so people will be happy to discuss. I owned the M7 8x42s and loved them. They were my first and only pair of binoculars for five years. I used them everyday. Great binoculars at a...

Which binocular(s) did you use today?

Those are so cool. I don't know where or how, but I've used a pair of those before. Neat little things.

Victory 7x42 fl* Thoughts and price?

There is some complex distortion in the FL7s. It always takes me a minute to get used to it if I've been using my UV7s recently beforehand. First viewing through my FL7s I found it bothersome as well and didn't really like the view, but I've warmed up to it now and really like them. I don't...
  23. Q

Victory 7x42 fl* Thoughts and price?

FL7s are an excellent pair of binoculars. To me they have a quintessentially Zeiss view - incredibly bright, sharp, and wide. If you can find a good pair at a decent price, then I highly recommend them. It's a real shame that Zeiss quit making 7s. The eye relief is sufficient for me to use them...

Britain's most prolific egg collector, reoffends again.

Oh no! Before just now I had no idea about this reprehensible hobby. Now I know about it and it breaks my heart. Humans are a scourge.
