I never did a side by side comparison of the ETX 80 to the TrailSeeker. But the ETX is larger, heavier and really intended for astronomy. Not likely to ever be put side by side, but if I do, I will post the results.

    Anybody use a trail cam

I am installing this security camera to monitor my bird feeders and later some bird houses. Has a 4X optical and 4X digital zoom. You can't get real close but from about 30 feet away I can see that there are birds on the feeder and tell sparrows from cardinals, from grackles from...

IP camera to watch my bird feeders

I am interested in setting up a wireless camera to watch my bird feeders so I can view what is going on from my desktop or from my smartphone. I set up an old android phone on a stand to look out the window with a remote viewing program that comes up on my computer, but the resolution is poor...

Opinion on low cost spotting scopes =

Today we had a great day of bird watching starting around 10 am. Headed to the beach to test out the New Celestron Trailseeker 20-60 80 mm 45 degree. In a range of about 400 to 500 feet, we were able to identify Buffel Heads in the bay, diving and feeding. (measured on Google Earth) We...

Josh, I expect you are right. I will hopefully find out this weekend. If it was for me I would have been happy with a 60 mm 45X or 48X zoom. But if it wasn't enough she would have me out buying another with a 60X. Don't get me wrong, my wife is great and I love her. She just wants to...

    Nikon coolpix b700

I have been using mine since July 2017. So far I am very happy with it. I am not an accomplished photographer and I use it mostly for long range photos for bird ID. For that it works quite well. Others will have to tell you about advanced features.

    Audubon ranking of scopes

Finally made a decision. I ordered the Celestron Trailseeker 80 20-60X with the 45 degree eyepiece. I will let you know how it works out. This will be my only purpose built spotting scope so I won't have anything to compare it to other than my telescopes.

We ended up ordering the Celestron Trailseeker 80 20-60X with the 45 degree eyepiece. Amazon had one at a reduced price. New but the box was damaged. Full warranty and return privileges, so we could not resist. I will let you know how it works out.

Is there a way to translate camera zoom to binocular or scope power?

I have a Nikon B700 60X Superzoom camera. https://www.nikonusa.com/en/nikon-products/product/compact-digital-cameras/coolpix-b700.html#tab-ProductDetail-ProductTabs-TechSpecs Get closer to what matters 60x optical zoom, 120x Dynamic Fine Zoom Few shots are too far away for the COOLPIX B700's...

    Binocular tripod adapters

Are there significant differences between binocular tripod adapters for binoculars that are 3 pounds or less? I am using them on monopods and photo type tripods. I have been using this Celsestron adapter for 10X50s and it seems to work fine. Easy to use and doesn't seem to flex under the...

    Audubon ranking of scopes

Reading the review, this was not an optics test this was a user experience report. It was based on the perception of actual users with the scopes in the field. As shown in the photo, they lined 'em up and asked people to compare them. It also appears that the scopes were evaluated within...

    city viewing

Opus, I am curious if you ever got your scope and what you purchased. What level of detail were you trying to see. As this is a bird forum, were you trying to identify birds at 10 miles? Where you successful?

    Practical magnifications

So many excellent comments. I am so grateful for your insights. As noted, I have experience with astronomy. Exit pupils, atmospheric conditions, seeing, and the like are known to me as they apply to stars and clusters, the moon and planets. But my terrestrial experience is limited to...

Really appreciate all the responses. Here is my current checklist: Trying to stay under $300 US (we will see if that holds) Included zoom eyepiece 45 degree angle 60X magnification - She wants to identify birds up to a mile away, across a lake or bay. I expect we will use 20 to 40 most of...

Single Speed vs. Dual speed focusers

Thanks for your responses. I know in astronomy the dual speed focuser is highly valued, but was not sure if it would be different for birding.

    Practical magnifications

I see 50 mm spotting scopes with 20-60 zooms and wonder if 50 mm is enough aperture to handle 60X. My wife uses a Nikon 10-22X 50 mm binocular and at 22X the image is still good but I can already feel it dimming. I am now wondering if 60 mm can really handle 60X and deliver a reasonably good...
