    Yellowhammer Song

I did not mean to sound that grumpy, I am happy to hear it, it's just that 2000 times a day everyday, without apparent feed stops, is a tad bewildering. The query, not a complaint, was more about the continuous delivery. And its not jet free twixt thee and me, with RAF, USAF and Norwich...

    Yellowhammer Song

I am coming to the conclusion that Yellowhammers do not need to eat. There is one in a particular tree on my boundary that we hear about every 40 seconds from pre-dawn until dusk... genuinely non-stop! It is in the same tree all of the time, it seems fine and healthy, but I really do not need...

    U.K. binocular deliveries.

I'd agree with most, and Yodel depends almost entirely upon the individual. Since we moved here its been fine, prior to that it was "mixed". Regarding the plunge to cheap service, I withdrew a sale from ebay, of a scope, clearly marked Royal Mail onlyas we are very rural and we want the Post...

    Buzzard sp. Wykeham Forest

Acres Down and Beaulieu Road Station good sites, but not guaranteed. Good areas for Goshawks too.

    Buzzard sp. Wykeham Forest

If you check the species side by side in your guide, there are some key differences that are (usually) visible in the field. I was lucky to grow up in the New Forest and become familiar with them as a youngster. http://honey-buzzard.blogspot.com/p/identification-revised.html has a couple of good...

    Buzzard sp. Wykeham Forest

Hi Louis, looks like a common buzzard to me too. Was there anything about it that made you wonder Honey Buzzard? From the photos the head shape is not too distinctive, what was it like to the eye? Best Harry

    Lesser Spotted Woodpecker

Thats a good point: a) it was from a car, and b) when I wrote up on Monday, I was defo for female c) memory is shouting red head, so can't have been female or misremembering Defo too small fo GSW, we have quite a few around and the juveniles all look bigger. Will keep looking.

    Lesser Spotted Woodpecker

So, has anyone else seen similar? I have been out but not retraced it. I am genuinely familiar with the species, from age 8 or 9, and saw the distinct black and whitey / buff ladder back with red patch on head. about 2/3 size of GSW. Even through certainty I am now doubting myself. What else...

    Lesser Spotted Woodpecker

Female, in garden of house on Holt Road, between Dereham and North Elmham, this AM at 6.00 ish. Just north of Gorgate lane. It flew off as I stopped, towards Hoe Common, but I could not relocate. Definite on ID, it's a species I grew up with in New Forest, only seen one in four years in Norfolk...

Birds that whistle - need info

Simply put, Jeff is right, using the standard definition of whistling using lips and teeth - no birds whistle as they have no lips and no teeth. Merriam Webster's definitions do give you leeway, as the sound made is also a whistle, so by definition anything making that sound is whistling. Next...

    False Widow?

I seem to remember Southampton area as one of the places they're found, from articles in the Daily Echo. (not that this is a guarantee of accuracy! :eek!: :t: Harry

    New Zealand Bird ID

Looks like European Blackbird to me. Kokato has a hooked bill, like a small parrot, and distinct blue wattles on the cheeks. The wing shape is much more blackbird like to me. Also the Kokato has a rounded tail. But Plump, size of a pigeon... may mean I am wrong. H

Sony A9 + 400mm GM + 2XTC with Real Time Autofocus software update

    1. I am not a competent photographer. 2. I have a great friend that is, and is using Sony Gear. 3. He is looking at the Real Time Autofocus for wildlife options being pushed out by Sony at the moment...

    Loud bird outside window

Yes, Yes and Yes as well as Military and Rescue Helicopters. The new jets out of Marham use the barracks 1/2 mile up the way as a turn point, but bizzarely they rarely wake me. Barn owl on the cooker vent is a underwear ruiner of major proportions, I agree, and why the heck foxes can't...

    Loud bird outside window

Unfortunately it is that time of year, I am awoken at 3.30 every morning by a truck, and at 4 by blackbirds etc. At night it is the owls, until late, followed by the boy racer on his way home after work at 12.30. It is a small village, I know the truck driver and the boy racer, but other than...

    Loud bird outside window

to be fair to Andy, in the post immediately above the one you quote, you ask him ... but have you ever had a bird singing 10 feet away from you as loud as it can as you are sleeping? Obviously not ... And he answered you. Its not a thing to lose it over, nor compare it to a body parts...

Sandpipers in Grand Turks in April

From memory, and without my books to hand, I would expect yellow/green legs and are brownish or rusty at most stages in life, non-breeding adults look greyer, but less distinct markings on throat. Size of a sparrow, maybe a bit larger but not much. Will look up in my Caribbean and USA books when...

    Rhubarb Jelly/Jam?

Well, as I would not eat it, I think it unfair to foist it on a bird 8-P but then again, I cannot recall the last caterpiller or mealworm I ate:eat: but i had some sunflower seeds earlier :-O Genuinely no idea, but as a lad, my dad's uneaten packed lunches went on the bird table, and some of...
