Leaf Warbler Identification - Lake Miyagase, Kanagawa, Japan

I would suggest listening to the three species calls on Xeno Canto. That would be the most reliable way of identifying them. The photo, unfortunately isn't clear enough for a positive ID.

Marsh & Willow Tits in Japan

Marsh tits in Japan are restricted to Hokkaido but you also get Willow tits there. They differ in habitat choices, plumage and calls/songs but an overall combination of features is best for identifying them. As for online - this article goes into detail about the differences Morphological...

    Bird ID in Japan

I use Birds of Japan (Chikara Otani) - Lynx Birdlife Field guides. Brazil's Birds of Japan for Helm is just the Japanese portion of Birds of East Asia. The former is much better.

Common Snipe - Farm fields near Yao City, Japan

Hi All I saw this snipe earlier today (21/11/2023) in some farm fields. I've got it listed as a Common but it's behaviour was more like a Latham's. It flushed heavily flew a short distance and landed with a plop. Habitat was also more appropriate for a Latham's and there was no visible white...

Thekla's Lark or Crested Lark please ๐Ÿ™

Hi Matt Yes the bill is the major factor - there isn't the convex lower mandible visible on Thekla's larks and also the facial features which match the Crested Lark more closely (the eye ring, eye stripe and supercilium). All the best Kandahar

Thekla's Lark or Crested Lark please ๐Ÿ™

Many thanks for the extra photos (which are really nice). I would say it's a Crested Lark though.

Thekla's Lark or Crested Lark please ๐Ÿ™

At the moment I can't get away from a Crested Lark. Do you have any more photos?

Bunting ID (W France, january 5th)

One could say the choice of perch relates to bird behaviour and bird behaviour is an important factor in identifying the species of bird. That is what my statement was referencing.

    Gallinula ayvalฤฑk 23 july

    Yes, that's a juvenile Moorhen.

Bunting ID (W France, january 5th)

It doesn't look like a Reed Bunting but more like a Cirl. I've seen both in France and I would also say the choice of perch is important. I don't recall seeing reed buntings perching on wires - they're very much in the reeds. Cirl Buntings, however, perch on wires all the time.

    Shrike - Japan

I agree with Grahame - Bull headed shrikes can vary quite surprisingly but the grey back is generally diagnostic.

Odd shrike, Saitama Japan, April 14

Yes, that's a rather nice female Bull Headed Shrike as Grahame says.

Which Warbler? Iran, Alborz, Apr. 2023

I'm thinking they're all Blyth's Reed Warblers. The undertail coverts seem too long for a Booted Warbler and the bill also doesn't look right.

Hume's Leaf Warbler or Yellow-browed Warbler? 29/4/21, Eocheongdo - South Korea

The whiteness of the wing bars (and the indistinct nature of the upper bar) and supercilium are certainly indicative. Did it call at all?

    Chiang Mai -Thailand 01.02.2023 Warblers

I agree with Tote - both look to be Greenish

Sakhalin or Pale Legged Leaf Warbler?

hi MacNara Thanks for that, it's very much appreciated - I'm familiar with the blog you mention and it's a very good one. I already have one Pale Legged at Nanko but was rather hoping to get a photo and this particular bird was different enough from the Sakhalin's that were also wizzing...

Sakhalin or Pale Legged Leaf Warbler?

Thanks for the comments everyone. Actually Nanko is one of the few places on the mainland where you may see Pale Legged Leaf Warblers for some reason known only to them. Osaka is on the coast - it's a major port city and Nanko is next to the port. Leaf Warbler migration through Osaka; Japanese...

Sakhalin or Pale Legged Leaf Warbler?

The title says it all. Photographed last year (28th September 2022) at Nanko ONBS Sanctury, Osaka, Japan. A difficult separation but I tend towards it being a Pale Legged Leaf Warbler based on plumage colouration. However, I am quite open to the alternative - any thoughts?
