Why there is so little advice on NZ birds.

Hey guys, Just came across this forum and realised that barely any Kiwi birders are actually answering questions. Sorry BirdForum, but us Kiwis don't actually use it much. Instead, all the action is at http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/index.php?sid=c9ab511a1f1c3e502b1262b37a2069a5 - BirdingNZ. So...

Papua New Guinea - Some old and terrible photos

But apparently VT's are only found in the south?

Papua New Guinea - Some old and terrible photos

Unknowable? I would have thought the silhouette was pretty distinctive but oh well. The brownish one (5) was near a group of Metallic Starlings, if that helps. Here is another one that I am 90% sure is just a sacred kingfisher but I'm just checking. The white stripe on the head doesn't look...

Papua New Guinea - Some old and terrible photos

I was going through a few photos from my time in Papua New Guinea and found a few birds I couldn't ID. They are all from the Sepik regions. Number 1: Maybe a manucode. Near Sissano Lagoon, Sandaun Province. 2: Shag I think. Sepik River, East Sepik Province 3: There are 2 birds in this one, the...

Bird on an small island close to Biak/Papua/New Guinea

Dollarbirds are SO HARD to id, especially in rubbish lighting. My first one convinced me I had seen a 'blue falcon', but the red bill (If you can see it) is pretty diagnostic.

    Australasian Bittern

An incidental sighting, it was just walking around the paddock, ignoring the cars. Not sure why it wasn't worried until it saw us, but I'm not complaining!

Papua New Guinea: Unidentified goshawk- Grey-headed? (East Sepik)

I have been hearing this one in a tree near where we are staying for some time. I'm not sure what it is, I'm thinking it is a grey-headed goshawk but I'm not 100 percent sure. I think it has a nest there, I have seen a goshawk-like shape with sticks etc. in its beak fly up into the tree. I heard...

Papua New Guinea: Rainbow Lorikeet or Dusky Lory?

These birds seen multiple times in flocks near Sissano Lagoon, making screeching sounds and flying high over the forest. Which one makes rapid-fire calls, and which leaves slower gaps between them? Of course, it might also be neither, but these are the two I think they might be. Sorry about the...

Papua New Guinea: Singing starling with yellowish eye?

Oops! Sorry, my bad. Just found in my Birds of New Guinea the text "Similar, but darker above (somewhat glossy) and more heavily marked; iris yellowish or orange-red." Sorry about that one. Thanks for clicking on this link anyway!

Papua New Guinea: Singing starling with yellowish eye?

I was photographing a flock of regular Singing Starlings near Wewak in the East Sepik province, and after examining the photos found that several of the immature ones had a pale-yellow eye. The flock was almost entirely immature ones, and I'm not sure if it was just a trick of the light or...

Rainforest birds near Angoram, Papua New Guinea

Thanks! I don't know if you can see it, but the other pigeony one has a white (or at least lighter) head. That should also be pretty distinctive and yet, I can only guess at what it is...

Rainforest birds near Angoram, Papua New Guinea

I saw these two birds on the 13th in the morning in the rainforest in Papua New Guinea, by a village 30 minutes by boat north of Angoram town. First one maybe Wompoo Fruit Dove, no idea about the other one, but it looks pretty distinctive so maybe I'm just blind... :). Thanks, especially to...

White shouldered Fairywren? Papua New Guinea

I saw this bird on an old grassy airstrip near Wewak in East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. It was with a small flock of white-shouldered fairywrens, and I thought it was a female, but after further research I found that the Sepik females were black, not grey. Any ideas?

    Papua New Guinea

Yes, I think it will be a torresian crow because I'm up in Wewak and we see them all the time, we have two nesting in a tree next to our house, and they are the noisiest things ever!

Large black bird, possibly a crow,East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea

This bird seen once in Wewak, Papua New Guinea. It might just be a Torresian Crow, as we get those quite a lot, but the wings look quite rounded and the tail seems too long... Seen on the 26th of May, 2016 at 6:30 am. Thanks!

Honeyeater? in Papua New Guinea, East Sepik province

I've seen this bird around quite a lot where I am, does anyone know what it is? I'm thinking maybe a Tawny-breasted or Silver-eared Honeyeater. It has a nice song, some quite liquidy notes often. Saw on the 3rd of May, 2016.
