Israel March 14 to March 24

I should have said where we went on the birding day. We started in Migdal on the Sea of Galilee and headed up into the Golan Heights. We made many stops along the way when we saw birds. We spend a lot of time in the Gamla Nature Reserve. We also spent time at Mount Bental. We then drove...

    1st Time to Israel

I just got back from our trip to Israel. I posted a report on the Vacation Report section of this forum. See: https://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=359137 I did hire a guide and I was glad I did. Worth the money as he was very helpful in knowing where to go and identifying birds that...

Israel March 14 to March 24

My wife and I made an eight day trip to Israel. We spent three days in Jerusalem, one day in the Dead Sea area (En Gedi) and four days in Northern Israel. We would have liked to visited the south part of the country including Eilat but didn’t have enough time in this trip. The focus of the...

    1st Time to Israel

Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful advice above and also to dcw who sent me a PM with more good advice. I purchased both of the recommended Princeton Field Guides "Birds of the Middle East" and “Birds of Europe”. We have a guide lined up. I found him?/her? (not sure because I don’t...

    1st Time to Israel

My wife and I are making our first visit to Israel in March. One day will be devoted to birding in and around Hula Valley and the Golan Heights. I am looking for advice on what field guides to purchase. We live in North America but hope to make additional trips to the Middle East and Europe...

    Accomodation Padre Island

The Chachalaca Inn is exactly what you are looking for. A B&B in very south Texas aimed directly at birders. The name alone is telling. I have reservations for April. My son stayed there last year and recommended it highly. See http://www.chachalaca.com/

    Costa Rica Quick Trip

I am going to make a quick trip to San Jose, Costa Rica for a medical procedure (colonoscopy). The purpose is to save money but since I will have a half a day of free time, I want to try to see some birds. Any recommendations for local guides (with a car) and where to go close to San Jose are...

    Manfrotto 700rc vs 500ah

I have the 500AH and use it to for my 4 pound scope. I like it a lot because of the quick release plate. It is easy to slide the plate back and forth to find the balance point. Then if I decide to put my camera on my scope to do some digiscoping, it is quick and easy to loosen the screw, move...

How best to carry tripod and scope

If you already own a day pack that you like, it can be used to carry a tripod (and save money). That is provided it has a loop (handle) at the top near wear the shoulder straps attach. Nearly all day packs have this loop/handle which is intended to carry the pack with one hand. I put a small...

Small tripods to fit in hand luggage

I can understand why Alexis likes quick set up. I watched the Vebron demo video and I like their novel system. Wish my tripod had it too. But for me, more sturdiness and lighter weight are higher priorities. Typically I set up my tripod at the start of the outing with all legs fully extended...

Small tripods to fit in hand luggage

I have a Feisol C-3442 tripod that travels well. Feisol's website says it's folded length is 49cm. I haven't measured it but it fits in my airline compliant carry-on bag easily. It is light and study. Supports my 25 - 60 scope well.

Any of you guys use a filter?

As a follow up to the above. My question remains: Why put 87 mm filter threads on the end of the scope when no 87 mm filters exist? Swaro, why not help your customers by making the threads 86 mm? I bought a clear 86 mm filter on amazon for $12.38. As expected, it is ever so slightly too...

Any of you guys use a filter?

So I tried Swaro again. They emailed me the following (names have been removed to protect the guilty): Good Morning, We had discussed some issues about finding a protective filter for your ATX 85mm. I contacted our digiscoping – camera expert. I have attached his response below as well as...

Any of you guys use a filter?

So I called Swaroski. The customer service representative agreed with my conclusion that the threads on the objective are for a filter that no one makes. The rep said that it is not their responsibility that there is no 87 mm filter available for purchase from them or anyone. Has anyone put...

Any of you guys use a filter?

I just ordered a Swaro ATX 25-60x85 and will take it on a Hawaii trip in 10 days. Seems like protecting the lens with a filter when birdwatching at the beach would be wise. But what filter to get? The Swaro tech data lists the objective filter thread as M 87 x 0.75. I looked the b h photo...

    Atx or apo

I am researching in preparation of buying my first scope and have a newbie question. Why do some want a lowest magnification of 20x or 25x? My limited experience with using scopes of friends is to scan for birds with my binocs and then zoom in with the scope.
