Unknown bird song, Reserva Santa Elena, Costa Rica

Following up, it was identified as a slaty-backed nightingale-thrush on iNaturalist.

I don’t know this one, and not recognized by Merlin. Any ideas? Thanks! Dan

    Costa Rica, Macaw Lodge, Carrara

I thought to look at earlier reports, and a guide came in at dinner who also confirmed the id. Thanks for the replies! Dan

    Costa Rica, Macaw Lodge, Carrara

Looking for id confirmation. I’m reading Snail Kite, which is also top choice for Merlin and iNat. This would be out of range, and juvenile black hawk of one flavor or the other is also possible.. Ideas? Thanks, Dan

Ideal drill bit for entrance holes

Whatever kind of drill that makes the properly sized hole. It's not fine cabinetry, and the as Mike says above, the birds don't care.

Discussion- What do you believe is the prettiest bird globally?

Maybe a bracket is needed. How long does a tournament take if it starts with 10,000 teams? Hmmm - Round 503: Namaqua Dove vs. Southern Lapwing :D

Best bird guides by region...Central and South America

Published 2014. Some changes since then, but until there is another edition, it's about as good as you'll get. eBird is up to date for CR, so use the two in conjunction.

Best bird guides by region...Central and South America

The second edition of Garrigues and Dean will be your best bet. https://www.amazon.com/Birds-Costa-Rica-Tropical-Publications/dp/0801479886/ Also available en español.

Changes in how Ebird treats non-natives

You can do this, in fact. Click the Checklists tab at the bottom of the screen, choose the list you want to edit, and the Edit link is at the lower right of the screen.

    Field bird book

I've used several, and always return to Sibley East myself. There's a Sibley app, too.

Costa Rica family holiday - telescope or no telescope?

I've taken a scope on a couple of my trips to CR, but never really used it. That is more a function of a lack of desire to carry it rather than a reflection on its usefulness. I do carry a camera with long lens on all my birding walks. Your guides will (should) have scopes as well.

Looking for good trails in the Adirondacks

The Adirondack park is six million acres and has hundreds of trails. I would reach out to the Northern NY Audubon chapter for advice. Where you go will depend on what you hope to see.

Empidonax - Arenal - Costa Rica - January

I'm not so good at empids either, but the photo is quite good.

First serious birding camera advice (budget €2000 - 3000)

My bird photography kit is an Olympus OMD-EM1 mark II coupled to a Olympus 40-150 f2.8 Pro, and with a 1.4x or 2x teleconverter as needed. With the 2x converter, you have 600mm equivalent. With the 2x converter, this kit weighs 1636g. As I am usually birding at the same time, I carry the camera...

    Costa Rica Family holiday

We stayed at Cerro Lodge once, too. It was during green season, and we were quite literally the only guests staying there

    Costa Rica Family holiday

Yes, that sounds about right for SJO to Monteverde. You are on the Interamerican Highway most of the way, and Ruta 606 up the mountain has been recently rebuilt, and may even be fully paved by now (haven't been down there in a couple years. Be aware that the drive from Monteverde to Arenal is...

    Costa Rica Family holiday

If you fly into Liberia, you are a short drive to the beach communities of Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa. From there you are not far from Rincon de la Viejo and Rio Celeste. Then, head up to the cloud forest at Monteverde. There are many reserves there, including Monteverde Cloud Forest...

Thoughts on Terra 8x32 for Kitchen to Yard/Feeder Viewing - 88 Yr Old

It might depend on how big the yard is. I found 7x and 8x to be too powerful for my yard (smallish, with a lot of vegetation). I bought a pair of Opticon Traveler 6x32 and have been real happy with them for winter window-viewing for FeederWatch, etc. Dan

Monteverde Costa Rica, Any help appreciated!

Agreed, but the tanager is now called Common Chlorospingus.

How often do you rake bird seeds?

I don't rake at all, either. The husks just compost where they fall (at least that which the dog doesn't lick up - he has a taste for Nyjer ) Grass doesn't grow under our feeders, but that is ok, because I am working on removing all the grass from our yard.
