Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

Yes, 6x is really nice for the theater, and I'm using it tonight for just that purpose! I see people there with small and full-size binos and while there's nothing wrong with that, the Mikron is the only modern bino I know of that truly has the form factor of an "opera glass." I slip the loop of...

Want to buy my son a gift. I am clueless

A minimalist pocket binocular under $300 that is equally suitable for slipping into a suit pocket or a casual walk around the lake, and also boxes up nicely as a sweet little gift from Dad? I would look no further than the Mikron. I have both the 6x and 7x and would recommend the 6x, as it is...

    APM MS-6x30

You can fix the diopter yourself. Find the three tiny screws under the rubber eyecup, loosen them, and twist the ring until it is calibrated to the diopter scale.

    Nikon 7x50 Prostar discontinued

To my knowledge, the Nikon 7x50 IF WP SP "Prostar" hasn't been available in the West for some time, but it was available directly from dealers in Japan. I checked Kyoei-Osaka's website a few days ago and found the message: "New orders are suspended" One more classic porro bites the dust. Get...

That price seems to me to be an absolutely insane amount to spend on binoculars for a child.

    Habicht with sticky rubber

My Habicht 8x30 developed sticky leatherette and Swarovski replaced it. I never considered it to be a problem with the leatherette, however. I must admit that one late night I stupidly applied shoe polish to it, and it became irreparably sticky afterward. I don't know what I was thinking; I knew...

best pocket/compact binoculars for opera & shows?

I never go to a show without my 6x15 Nikon Mikron. I've also got the 7x15 but I find the 6x more comfortable to use.

    Habicht for birdwatching?

It's really nothing too specific that makes me call out the 10x40 as the best of the three Habicht models. I like the 40mm objectives, and the 4mm exit pupil. Any EP less than 4mm feels tight to me, so that's something I appreciate about the 10x over the 8x even though it's a very small gain. It...

    Habicht for birdwatching?

Special indeed!! Those sound beautiful- I have thought many times about a navy blue Habicht, but never knew they actually existed. Being military binoculars, I suppose the Swedish Habichts have individually focussing eyepieces?

    Habicht for birdwatching?

If you prefer 10x, you should get the 10x40 without regrets. I have all three Habichts (7, 8, and 10,) and I think the 10x is the best of them, generally speaking. I birded exclusively with the 8x for several years, and it's just fine for that purpose or any other. I can tell you that since...

Current fuss in North America about eponymous English bird names

Going to be an interesting poll, but how about some other options, such as: Don't particularly care, I use the Latin names anyway or Understand the concept of structural bias and need to address it, but unsure if this is the way to go about it or Just not really concerned about this at...

Current fuss in North America about eponymous English bird names

I keep track of birds using their Latin names, and it's really not hard to learn them. Much easier to understand the relationships between families and genii that way. I think what you say makes a lot of sense, Etudiant.

Waterproofness and your use of binoculars

I too used to think it was crazy to bird in the rain but now, not at all. I go out birding in the rain all the time and frequently have the park all to myself. As has been mentioned above, rainy days can offer exceptional birding because of migratory species being forced to land. Waterproofing...

Current fuss in North America about eponymous English bird names

I'd like to know what names people think would be appropriate for renaming. Take Steller's Jay- perhaps Cerulean Jay would be a good one? I wouldn't mind if they renamed it "BlueR Jay". I'm tired of all these Cyanocitta cristata prancin' around my backyard as if they were the bluest of the...

Current fuss in North America about eponymous English bird names

At the risk of sounding cynical, I do think this is at the heart of the matter. Any organization has to see that with the public sentiment as it is, it's just bad business practice after a certain point.

Current fuss in North America about eponymous English bird names

I've got news for ya, Andy- it's not the old guys like me and you who are writing the future, and very active and vocal youngsters are exactly what the world needs. The kids are alright.

Current fuss in North America about eponymous English bird names

I first read about this yesterday on NPR's website, and I like what Kenn Kaufmann had to say about it - including his admission that his kneejerk reaction was to be against it, until he thought better of it. As the AOS says in their statement, it would be more fraught to take on renaming birds...
