    Garden / Yard List 2024

Well, that was well talked up. #78 Nuthatch this morning, calling from a corner of the garden. It looks like it is becoming a June thing. Dispersing juveniles? The grey square was the dead one. You can see its local demise from the 2019 records. Perhaps that was the outlier, and recent...

Which Species Will Be the Next to Breed in the UK?

Pallid Harrier have hybridised before. Moustached Warbler has not, yet, occurred in the U.K.

    Garden / Yard List 2024

It must be a June thing. Two years ago, I found this by my front door. 🚪

Still nothing new in the Arctic conditions in the garden, we even put the heating on today - June! The weird Duck which has occasionally visited over the last couple of years, has been around for the last few days. Filmed it from the bathroom window. I used to think it was Mallard x...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Four or more House Martins prospecting eaves on our estate all day today, I’m hoping they move in. Just one pair checked out a roof once last year. I’m pretty sure they nest in a much newer estate across the river, so it’s a surprise they don’t nest here. The pair of Swifts seem to be still...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Nothing new, sadly, but a pair of Swifts investigating a roof of one of the buildings on our estate was new. Never seen one land in the garden before (once just across the river in a neighbouring estate) I got nest boxes put up in the big old church tower in the centre of town, but I’ve no...

    Siberian Stonechat? - U.K. today

My first thought was possibly rubicola. When it flew the dark underwing got me worried. Admittedly it’s a strange time and place (Brecks) for anything other than hibernans.

    Siberian Stonechat? - U.K. today

Straight off the phone. Long range and slightly heat-hazy.

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Just got back from a West Country jaunt with Mrs. BH, hardly any birding, though my first Cirl Buntings for 10 years, were very welcome. Late news from just before we went away was #76 Corn Bunting. A bird flew overhead at one of the corners of the garden, and appeared to land in a tall tree...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Swapped my old mill in Suffolk for an old mill near Bath last night. Very similar birds, including Grey Wagtail but also Sand Martins which are quite a scarce visitor back home. Before we left home on Monday morning, there was a begging Tawny Owl calling around 09:00 in the nice grounds of the...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

The garden has jumped from Winter a week ago to Summer this week. Hard to imagine I will be adding many new additions over the next couple of months, though there are a few possibilities. Probably not worth making any great efforts at getting up early for the forseeable future. However, tonight...

Brown Booby may get split - an issue for British listers?

There’s just one record claimed outside of the Pacific, it’s probably not one for us to have worry about.

    Garden / Yard List 2024

An early start today. After nearly 16 hours of rain I was hopeful something might have dropped in. Sadly it was super quiet, I didn’t even bother running the Merlin App, not that it would have picked up a distant #75 Cuckoo calling from across the road. A day later than last year. They usually...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

#74 Mistle Thrush was a long overdue yeartick yesterday. A single bird being unceremoniously chased out of the garden by a couple of Blackbirds. In a normal year I would have seen MT multiple times by now, they’ve even bred just across the road - but this is not a normal year, and this is my...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

A good start this morning, when the Cetti’s Warbler that has an extensive territory, decided to pop down to its border with my garden, and have a little sing. Just my 2nd record this year. A Swallow mobbing a high Sparrowhawk made me look up, and spot 2x #73 House Martins. A nice Sunbow seen...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

I reckon that’s about right. Another limitation is probably down to hardware rather than software. It often doesn’t hear things that I can hear (never the other way around). I like to use it in the garden just in case I get to hear something but am not quick enough to fire off a shot with the...

    Garden / Yard List 2024

Little to report from recent days - continuing records for Pheasant and Green Woodpecker, another Willow Warbler, Oystercatcher and Lapwing a few Swallows and a couple of Linnets were the standouts. Braved the cold and got out early this morning, and was rewarded with my first Spring record of...

restaurants where you can bird and eat at the same time

Shieldaig Bar & Coastal Kitchen https://maps.app.goo.gl/U7JBVwfnCny6tJvz9?g_st=ic Was a decent meal iirc, White-tailed Eagle the highlight from the roof terrace. Fortunately I was facing the bay, difficult to give my full attention to Mrs. BH 😚

#70 Swallow this morning. Three came whizzing past despite the cold and breeze. I’ve been seeing them locally for a little while, so no great surprise, and I shall see them daily till the end of September at least.

    Garden / Yard List 2024

A hoped for #69 Willow Warbler singing this morning. In the same tree as my first April record last year - but two days later. Given the scarcity in Spring, I’m tempted to think it’s the same bird.

    Birdforum App

I view mostly on my phone and tablet, very rarely on my laptop, my view is perfectly fine as is, so I probably won’t go for the wrAPPer version. Thanks for explaining it.

My local Song Thrushes often, but not this year! Imitate Oystercatcher. I usually take that as a sign that Oystercatchers have arrived in the valley. They only seem to do it in early spring. I suspect it’s because they hear it (at night?) and like the sound. 🤣
