Difference between Monarch 5 and 7.

Well if that is the case with the coatings it is hard to justify an additional $180.00 for a wider FOV.

Difference between Monarch 5 and 7.

Other than FOV and eye relief what are the differences between the Monarch 5 8x42 and M7 8x42? They both have ED glass. Are the coatings better on the M7?

    Good Nikon Porros?

I received my 7x35 Aculon bins on Friday. I continue to be very impressed by the Aculon line. My sample is very clear and very sharp at the center. Color is outstanding. No noticeable CA seen. They are actually a bit smaller and lighter than the 7x35 Action IV bins that we have.

    Good Nikon Porros?

Though I have not actually looked through the EX's, I did a lot of research and it would seem Nikon does not use Aspherical glass with the 7x35 EX but do with the 7x35 Aculon. That is why I opted for the Aculon. The Aspherical glass makes a big difference with wide FOV bins. As far as eye...

    Good Nikon Porros?

I do like the focusing on these. They are indeed smooth. I was using them this morning viewing birds at my feeders and was very impressed with the clarity, the colors and the contrast. Depth of field is far shallower than my 7x35 Actions but that is to be expected with higher magnification. You...

    Good Nikon Porros?

Well on a whim I picked up a pair of 10x42 Aculons yesterday. I found them local and was impressed in the store so I bought them. Very lightweight, very sharp, great contrast, great close focus distance for a set of 10x porros, as good as my 7x35 Actions. I was unable to try them out on stars...

    Good Nikon Porros?

I am wanting these bins for mostly birding. I will use them sky watching secondary. That is why I am looking at 10x50's.

    Good Nikon Porros?

Thanks for the report Barry! I am going to get a set of Aculon 10x50's by the end of the month. I will give a report on them for both birding and sky watching.

    Good Nikon Porros?

Barry, Thanks for that response! :t: When it comes to birding I like the wider FOV. I had bought a pair of Nikon Monarch 5 8x42's last year and hated them due to the 330ft FOV. I returned them. I understand the higher you go in magnification the less FOV you get. Heck the Aculon 10x50's have a...

    Good Nikon Porros?

Have you tried your 10x42's out star gazing? I am debating on going with a 10x42 Aculon or a 10x50 Aculon. It will be primarily for birding but I want the option of using it for sky watching as well.

Where do you go birding in southern Illinois?

My wife and I are wanting to plan a trip to southern Illinois for the first weekend in May. We live in south central Illinois and were thinking somewhere down around Shawnee. I would love to go somewhere we could see some Owls along with other songbird species. Thanks for any input!

Keep going back to the Nikon Action IV 7x35.

Thanks for that reply. I think I may order a set of the 7x35 Aculons on payday. I was just doing some birding today in my yard. I was trying to use the Vortex Raptors I have and they are just not close to the Nikon Actions. They black out unless you have them set exactly where they want to be...

Keep going back to the Nikon Action IV 7x35.

I have tried several other bins, Monarch 5 8x42, hated the narrow FOV, Vanguard Spirit 8x36, just not that Sharp and fairly dull if that makes any sense. I got a pair of Vortex Raptor 6.5x30 they are ok except they don't focus close enough. So I keep using the old Nikon Action 7x35s. The...

    Monarch 7 8x30 eye relief

I have yet to find a bin that I can use while wearing my glasses. I just take them off and use the diopter on the bins.

Took back Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 got Vortex Raptor 6.5x32

Yea the close focus is 15 ft. I think. The Nikon 7x35s are no better though. I used them a bit this evening watching some Finches at the feeders in our yard. They are a lot better than the Monarch 5 are in the FOV dept. Not quite as wide as the Nikon Action 7x35s my wife uses but still great...

Took back Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 got Vortex Raptor 6.5x32

Well honestly they seemed the same as the Monarchs. Not as bright as the Nikon 7x35's but at the price I got them at I could not pass them up.

Took back Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 got Vortex Raptor 6.5x32

I had purchased a pair of Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 bins this past weekend. Tried to use them birding and the FOV just stinks. So today I took them back to Cabela's and looked at some other bins. I tried quite a few different brands out and ended up going with Vortex Raptor 6.5x32s. They fit all my...

Flashlight, Surefire P2X Fury: any thought?

I have or have had several Surefire lights. I can tell you they are worth every penny! I had the tail switch go out on one, I called Surefire and asked them if I needed to send the light back? The gentleman said no, asked me for my address and I had a replacement at my door in a day. I use one...

    Small Shoulder Bag

I use a bag from a company called Blackhawk. It is called the "Tactical Handbag". Though in my opinion it is not tactical at all. It is made of 1000 denier nylon with a rubber like material on the bottom to keep your gear dry. It will hold my Nikon Monarch 5 8x42 bins, my Peterson Field Guide...
