In search of the Yellow-billed Magpie

I had two at a Rest stop right before Paseo Robles last weekend. Was pretty surprised, I normally have to get up near Auburn to find the dang things.

    Southern California Pelagic

I was thinking October might be a great time to check out what's around. Reading reports right now though, what in the world is going on… Ancient Murrelets are around again. Various Boobies in Anacapa Channel. Might need to just randomly hit a boat a week at this rate.

    Anaheim and Carlsbad in August

Crystal Cove is a great recommendation, I always forget about it. I may well be up for a birding outing or two at the time. It will depend on my availability.

Palos Verde or Bonelli Park for CA Gnatcatcher. Check eBird for sightings.

    Anaheim and Carlsbad in August

Hummingbirds should be all over... Bolsa Chica for your Terns and other shore birds. Surfbird you will have to find some rocks for, probably not at Bolsa Chica, perhaps Newport Back Bay. Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Garden has CA Quail and Thrasher fairly reliably. OC listserv is readable at...

    RFI Fayetteville Area Hotspots.

I will be in NW Arkansas in the next couple of weeks and I am looking for some relatively near to Fayetteville birding hotspots to check out. Thanks!

The ones announced later in the season out of SB / Ventura are very attractive to me with this season's weather patterns.

Can you "Tick" on call only?

This. Around my local area, I know where I need to see a Kingbird to check it off. I also know in the same area, 99% of all Scrub Jay calls are going to be the same dang Mockingbird that was imitating the Kingbird, and he is probably the one doing Oriole calls too!

I have done the PT Loma one enough that I was very interested in the SB trip but couldn't afford a day off working and the ticket cost with results being what they have recently… Short notice did not give me enough time to talk myself into it.

    Southern California Pelagic

It's not a terrible price. It is just significantly more expensive than the one out of Pt Loma on the same day. A lot of LACo Birders are on that boat traditionally.

FYI: May 17 pelagic birding trip out of Santa Barbara

I was considering going from Los Angeles. Could have picked you up. Couldn't justify the expense on a work day for myself. More interested in times / seasons I have not done many Pelagics.

    Southern California Pelagic

I think the massive cost is the main reason. Short notice + 50%+ more than the one which has been on schedule for a long time really hurt your chances.

    Whimbrel or Curlew please, England

    Whimbrel for my money.

Gull ID. Playa Del Rey California - April 14

The overall (small) size and bill size / shape. No dark in the wings so it's hard to pin to anything other than a small first cycle GW. I am pretty average at gulls and appreciate help / confirmation.

Gull ID. Playa Del Rey California - April 14

This gull is giving us some trouble… We reckon it is mostly likely a 1st Cycle Glaucous-winged Gull Female. But… it's not quite right. Leading us to suspect a hybrid. So I would like some opinions. About the size of a Thayer's Gull. The feet are dark, not just in shadow. I will add more...

    Common / Mew Gull

Thanks all. Appreciate the input. There were three individuals that stood out as Mew. Just starting to tackle our non-common first cycle Gulls so I am more than willing to educated.

    Common / Mew Gull

Seen today, Goleta California. Similar size to Ring-billed. All black tail in flight and the thin pale fringe around the median upperwing coverts. There were at least three that stood out from the first cycle Ring-Billed... Have little experience with Mew, would appreciate insights.

Hawk(?) ID - Eastern PA, USA

That's an Accipiter alright. I am not going to call it from 'legs' without at least a hint of other tell tale field marks.

    Immature Bald Eagle.

Another 1st cycle gull ID question, Riverside, CA, USA

Looks like Western. Being in Riverside… likely Herring.

Comment by 'Guest' in media 'Bendire's Thrasher'

They sure do. Unfortunately I did not get a clear shot with the tail exposed. However, between the two most of the field markings are visible. I suspect I will be at this location again soon, Le'Conte's Thrasher is said to frequent that particular area also, and I require photographs.
