    USA Southwest this month

Thanks. I've booked flights from 15th May to 3rd June and will probably head to Lytle straight off. Some hotels in Vegas midweek are actually really cheap - I think they hope you'll gamble in their casinos - so I might spend a night there after and before my flights.

    USA Southwest this month

I'm considering making a trip to the States at some point this year, currently thinking of flying into and out of Vegas, and driving around Utah and Arizona. It sounds like the Lytle Nature Reserve in Utah would be well worth spending some time at. Happy to have someone join me, and I'd be...

    Colorado 'chicken run': April 2024

I've got a discounted flight to the States available through my Amex card. Haven't booked it yet, but am thinking of going to southern Utah and Arizona in a week or two. If you need any company on your Texas and Arizona trip though, drop me a PM.

    Colorado 'chicken run': April 2024

Thanks for posting. I think camping is the way to go in the States. If you've got a car you can just throw your tent in without packing it up, so it's easy. Hotels there are really expensive and generally not to my taste either. Where did you go in Arizona and Utah?

    Nairobi 10th March

This went OK. Got a driver for the day at the airport and he took me to the Sharpe's Longclaw Reserve and Lake Naivasha, where a local guide was kind enough to show me round for a couple of hours. Got 77 species, eight of which were new for me.

    Drakensberg 19-24 March 2024

I spent six days walking through the Drakensberg Mountains (South Africa) doing this hike and looking for wildlife. March is of course the start of autumn there and I imagine the birds would have been a lot more in evidence in October/November when presumably they would be breeding. But I...

    Birding Strategy Victoria Falls

I'm visiting Victoria Falls from 11-16th March, and trying to decide what the best strategy for birding would be. It seems that the Falls National Park has a very extensive list, so it would be worth birding there, if it's not likely to be too crowded. Going out into some savannah would probably...

18 weeks jail for taking Peregrine eggs.

Some truth in the second sentence I suppose. Crime is very low in Monaco and Switzerland. But, if any of us feel that we could achieve a similar society in our own country, we should run for president!

    Nairobi 10th March

I have a whole day layover in Nairobi on 10th March (Sunday). I believe I can get a transit visa to go out of the airport. I'd be pleased to have someone join me for some birding, or suggestions of what to do. Thanks

Mongolia 2025 Snow Leopard, Pallas's Cat and much more - another attempt to get a group together,

Look into getting a one way flight to Istanbul then an open jaw flight from there to UB and back to the UK. Could save you £200. Still expensive though.

Eastern South Africa and Victoria Falls in March

I'm planning a trip to southern Africa from 10th-30th March to include a trek in the Drakensberg to look for specialities there (Drakensberg Northern Traverse Hike (19-24 Mar 2024) - DrakensbergHiker). I'm also thinking of heading to Wakkerstrom and Victoria Falls before and after the hike. If...

EOS RP with EF 100-400mm lens

I struggled a bit with my camera (specifications as above) on a recent trip to Vietnam. The camera seems so slow to focus that I'm missing a lot of shots because the birds have moved on by the time I can take the photo. The smallest autofocussing setting seems a bit big too, compared to on...

Cuba Independent. February 1 to 22nd.

Eugeni, try to stay in casas particulares. They were the only places I found where it was possible to get decent food. The food in hotels and restaurants was the worst I have experienced anywhere in the world, I'm sorry to say.

Most plant species per square metre

There's lies, damned lies and statistics. Happens all the time.

Most plant species per square metre

That's what I'm saying. You can cherry-pick the area in order to give each of a number of different habitats the title.

Most plant species per square metre

There are only two possible meanings of "per square metre" here. Either it's a typical square metre, as I suggested in my first post, or it's just meant as an arbitrary reference to a unit of area, referring to the whole existing area of the habitat. So I took it that the claim must refer to the...

Most plant species per square metre

So you're saying the figure relates to all habitats on earth, calculating a figure by dividing the number of species in them by the area. Which means it just comes down to how narrowly you define a habitat. The fynbos have an area of 90,000km2 and about 9,000 species of plant. So that means one...

Most plant species per square metre

Where to Watch Birds in Africa states (page 316) that the fynbos of the mountains of the South African Cape support more plant species per square metre than any other habitat on earth. Is this true? Clearly a typical square metre of fertile meadow will hold more species than a typical square...

    Red-breasted Geese

Thanks very much. If they do show up and you have the chance to post on here that would be much appreciated. I'm sure I can get on a wizzair flight from Luton without needing to book too far ahead.

    Red-breasted Geese

I'm thinking of making a trip to Bulgaria to see Red-breasted Geese, flying to Varna and then driving up to Durankulak Lake. I believe that they only show up there in Jan and Feb and when it gets too cold in Romania. So is there any way that I can monitor/get alerts as to when they have arrived...

Shanghai Visa Free Transit Dec 23

Yes, I just took a bicycle to get there from my hotel. I didn't see all that much beyond the Waxwings and Parrotbills though - Orange-bellied Leafbird, Daurian Redstart, Siskin, Yellow-browed Warbler being the main other birds.

Shanghai Visa Free Transit Dec 23

Thanks. No other images for 8863, but here it is brighter. It seems to have a dark throat and quite a few rufous tones. It was with the Brambling, in a brushy area away from the marshes.
