Why is it such a common problem now days for binoculars to have too much eye relief r

It may be that the designers calculate the eye cup extension based on the optical ER and not the actual ER, which in my experience is often much less (5-7mm less in a couple of pairs I recently bought). OR, it could be that many manufacturers are using off-the-shelf eye cups when they should be...

    "Immersion" - What Price Glory?

I think Lee is correct that the term might mean slightly different things to different people (and maybe my standards are just lower... |;| ) For me, a reasonably sharp, reasonably wide view with enough eye relief to allow the field stop circle to "disappear" into my mid peripheral vision feels...

Maybe not the best choice. Maybe not, but certainly not a bad choice, either.

    Best reverse porro prism bin?

Nikon and Bushnell I've had at least four generations of Nikon reverse porros and can vouch for them. Hard to beat for quality at that price/size/weight point, so I don't think you'd go wrong with the 8x25 Prostaff. That said, the (now) Bushnell Custom Compact 7x26 E2s are special. I...

What kind of optics are you giving for Christmas?

Three EO Three pairs from EO's closing sale: 6.5 and 8x porros and a pair of roofs. Good luck with the Docter. My wife bought me one three Christmases ago and I think I like looking at it more than looking through it... ;-) (probably because I like to keep my glasses on)

    Japanese Made Bargains

Leupold Hawthorne My Leupold Hawthorne 7x42s are pretty sweet, and at around $250 were a bargain. Unfortunately they are no longer made. It looks like the BX-4 series are still made in Japan. Don't know about others.

    10x50 Bins

Kowa SV 10x50 I'm pretty happy with my SVs. They are relatively light, have great ER and a nice sweet spot of resolution. The also get soft at the outer third of the image circle and have noticeable color fringing there as well, but for $220 (@ Eagle Optics) there was nothing that could touch...

First bins for daughter, sub $100

Yosemite or Kowa SV, but get the 6x30: brighter and wider field of view.

    Best 10x at $300-$500

Quick update: A couple of weeks ago I was able to compare my 7x42 Hawthornes to four 10x42 binoculars: Swaro EL sv, Zeiss Conquest, Vortex Razor and Viper HDs. I know this is an apples-and-oranges comparison, but fair for me from a subjective point of view because I'm looking for center...

    Diopter Adjustment

Interestingly, that doesn't work as well for me (neither does shutting an eye). Covering one objective with the cap and then the other seems to yield the best results in my case. When I try diopter adjustment with both eyes open it feels like my eyes may be trying to compensate a little. But...

Where would you put your money?

At those distances go for a sharp 6x-8x. They'll be brighter than most 10x, and they'll serve you better for all-around use. A better comparison to the Vanguard ED is the Monarch 5. The Prostaffs are dimmer in the same magnifications, in my limited experience.

    Best 10x at $300-$500

Hi Frank. Thanks for the reply. As always, I appreciate the great information that you, Steve and others here have to offer. I would look at an 8.5 with good ER, but I'm actually thinking of putting the whole search on hold for awhile and seeing what the next crop of mid-level 10x ED...

Yosemite, Raptor, Kingbird, Kowa YF: Any Real Differences?

I've had two Yosemites, two Kowas and one Raptor (all 6/6.5x) and a Yosemite 8x. Small sample size obviously, but here's my experience: First Yosemite (previous model - maybe 2009?) was great. I gave it to my mother, who loves it. Raptor never felt quite right, and wasn't as sharp as that...

    Best 10x at $300-$500

I'm going to do a little thread crossover here, in case someone in the future is searching for a 10x to compliment their 7-8x as I am. Steve, your post got me thinking that my whole search is predicated on the assumption that there is a 10x out there that's as sharp as my 7x42 Hawthorne on...

    Eye Relief Irritations

Hi Steve. I want the 10x as a complement to my 7x42 Hawthornes. I've been really pleased with those, using them almost daily for six months. They are so sharp in the big sweet spot that I use them over my 10x42 ZRS out to about 1.5 miles, despite the fact that things appear smaller. However...

    Eye Relief Irritations

Good call. I got to check them out today during lunch (drove to REI). They work for me. Full FOV (although not a particularly wide FOV). Fairly sharp and bright, too. I've got that 20% off coupon that's good until 4/13. I'll wait a bit and see if they drop the price down to Nikon's new...

Kowa Genesis 8x33 ... Why Spend More ???

Not necessarily true. I seem to have a particular problem with the rolling ball effect of the Swaros I've tried recently (not just swaros - some other binoculars have the same effect), and I need more eye relief than many "alphas" provide. In this case the best binocular for you may really not...
