    Leupold Hawthorne My Leupold Hawthorne 7x42s are pretty sweet, and at around $250 were a bargain. Unfortunately they are no longer made. It looks like the BX-4 series are still made in Japan. Don't know about others.

    Interestingly, that doesn't work as well for me (neither does shutting an eye). Covering one objective with the cap and then the other seems to yield the best results in my case. When I try diopter adjustment with both eyes open it feels like my eyes may be trying to compensate a little. But...

    Where would you put your money?

    At those distances go for a sharp 6x-8x. They'll be brighter than most 10x, and they'll serve you better for all-around use. A better comparison to the Vanguard ED is the Monarch 5. The Prostaffs are dimmer in the same magnifications, in my limited experience.
