    Turning on flash for OM1

I found out because my brother told me, otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue.

    New OM-1

May be of interest: Just bought an OM-1, and the first thing I did was connect it up to OM workspace to make sure it was running the latest firmware. It told me the camera had the latest firmware 1.3 and required no update. I then linked it the OI.Share app on my phone which told me I was...

    Mystery birds in the sky

Thanks for your reply. Your photo certainly illustrates the explanation you have given and I am sure that has been the case for what I saw. What amazed me was how white the wings and tails looked by comparison to their dark bodies. I wish I had been able to take a photo at the time.

    Mystery birds in the sky

Driving home from work yesterday I was stopped at traffic lights. When I looked up I saw a flock of birds flying around overhead that looked most unusual to me. There were probably about 50 or so, I would guess about starling size, flying around like starlings do. What made them stand out for me...

    Is this a Wheatear?

Having checked again in my id guide I'm inclined to agree. I think I happened to have taken a picture of a sparrow but there were other birds of a similar size and colouration which had a more slender longer beak which brought "Wheatear" to mind. Thanks for the quick reply.

    Is this a Wheatear?

Saw these birds flitting about on the beach at Lulworth Cove in Dorset today. My gut instinct was Wheatear, but I didn't have any binos and only managed to get this picture which is not the most ideal angle. One looked to be feeding another one. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Keep your Opticron receipt and pass it on if you sell it.

I bought a HR66 scope with SDLv2 eyepiece a couple of years ago which I registered online but I was unable to find a serial number anywhere. So I hope my 30yr warranty still applies.

    Bird table bars

Thanks to all for your suggestions and advice. This gives me a chance to have a go at modifying my bird table, with roof, in order to prevent the larger birds scaring off the smaller ones.

    Bird table bars

Bit of an unusual request I think. I'm thinking of attaching some vertical bars to our Bird table to, hopefully, prevent the larger birds (pigeons, magpies etc) from being attracted by the contents and hoovering it all up, and keeping the smaller birds away. I'm quite happy for blackbirds and...

Winner Announced; Next Drawing November 10th: Win a Pair of PRIME HD binoculars

Bought my wife a pair of relatively cheap Nikon Porro binos. Unfortunately she's not keen on them so when we go out together I have have to use them while she uses mine! Could really do with a better pair, hence this response. Am crossing my fingers (not easy when your fingers are riddled with...

    Farne Islands

Thanks for the replies guys. Managed to get a boat trip on Wednesday (none Tuesday). A bit wet and overcast but my wife and I both enjoyed the experience. Didn't see any puffins but did see some juvenile kittiwakes. I think the dark clouds and sombre sky added to the overall atmosphere...

Winner Announced; Next Drawing September 10th: Win a Pair of PRIME HD binoculars

Went to Farne Islands on Wednesday. Didn't see any puffins but was pleased to see some juvenile kittiwakes. Farne Islands are amazing and well worth a visit.

Winner Announced; Next Drawing September 10th: Win a Pair of PRIME HD binoculars

Off up to Northumberland tomorrow for a few days so hoping to see some different birds to what I am used to. Trouble is if they are different I'll probably have trouble identifying them.

    Farne Islands

Quick question: My wife and I are hoping to make a trip to the Farne Islands in Northumberland on Wednesday. What are we likely to see and will we see any puffins? It would help my cause if SWMBO were able to actually see some puffins as she is not exactly inspired by the weather forecast or...

Winner Announced; Next Drawing September 10th: Win a Pair of PRIME HD binoculars

"Ask someone for a limerick and they may say "There was a young man from Nantucket" but do they know the rest of that one? I do, and it's really not appropriate for this forum!" One of my favourite limericks is one which is a bit off the wall: There was a young man from Dundee Who got stung on...

Winner Announced; Next Drawing September 10th: Win a Pair of PRIME HD binoculars

Congratulations to Joannec (he says through gritted teeth!). Seriously though, congratulations. We are all responding in the hope of being next month's winner, otherwise we would probably not be replying. I am writing this because of the faint chance of winning something for nothing. It has...

Saw this on the outside of a bird hide yesterday at Burton Mere Wetland. Can't find it positively in what few id guides I possess

Bird ID help for a beginner.

I too am a newcomer to the birdwatching phenomenon. I am fairly hopeless at recognising the smaller birds unless they are really obvious (robin, blue-tit, great-tit etc). I am guessing there's no easy way other than repetition in the hope that they eventually get committed to memory, at least...

    Gulls at South Shields

I have yet to see either, but I can appreciate that familiarity would make a big difference. Hopefully one day I will get to that stage.

    Gulls at South Shields

I am a newcomer to this birdwatching and am absolutely amazed at how you can tell there are two fulmars in the photo, because to my untrained eyes they all look the same. Clearly I have a lot to learn. Respect!
